Springing forward in learning in 2018!

Happy New Year and welcome to our first blog post of 2018!

In Literacy we are learning how to write a report. We wrote reports on our Christmas holidays and included lots of detail about people we visited, foods we ate and the gifts we gave and received.

In Maths we are learning how to tell the time – o’clock, half past and quarter to/past. We enjoyed playing games, making our own analogue clocks and recording the time on our Maths wall. We are learning a song about how to tell the time – here’s the link if you’d like to practise at home:

We start our Scottish focus next week, we are going to be looking at Scottish arts and crafts. If any of you have any areas of expertise (knitting, weaving, etc) please get in touch, we’d love to have some experts in to show us how it’s done!

Homework and reading books will go home on Monday.

PE is on Wednesdays and Thursdays this term.

Festive Fun in P2/3

In Maths we have been learning about patterns and number sequences. We challenged ourselves to continue number patterns to and beyond 100.

In Literacy we wrote stories about Santa’s problem. We tried to include exclamation marks and question marks in our writing. We were given this story starter:

Everything was quiet at the North Pole until…

Waaaaaah!’ cried Santa, as loud as could be.

Mrs Claus came running out of the workshop.

‘Whatever is the matter?’ she asked, passing Santa her handkerchief.

‘I… I… I think Christmas will be ruined!’ Santa sobbed….

A.M’s story:

All the reindeers were playing in the dark then all of them got lost! Mrs Claus said, ‘how are we going to find them in time for Christmas?’

Santa said, ‘let’s blow the reindeer trumpet then they will come back!’

‘Well done’, said Mrs Claus. So Santa blew the trumpet 1…2…3… BRRRRRRP. Then all of the reindeers came galloping back.

J.B’s story:

‘Because I’m ill’ said Santa.

‘How?’ said Mrs Claus.

‘Well, there was no stuffing for the teddies, so I filled them with mince pies!’

‘How silly’, said Mrs Claus.

‘…Then I got hungry so I ate the teddies.’

‘WHAT?’ said Mrs Claus.

‘Oops’ said Santa. A couple of days later Santa woke up in hospital feeling much better just in time for Christmas.

Here are some photos of our Christmas crafts, we made penguins, 3D Christmas cards and holly wreaths.

We LOVED our Christmas party!

Have a Very Merry Christmas!

P2/3’s Crafty Christmas Creations

Well done to our Primary 2 Nativity super stars, what a fabulous show they put on!

Primary 3 have been busy making Kelpies out of clay, they are looking fantastic.

In Literacy this week we looked at the features of a poster. We made posters for our Christmas Stall, our success criteria was to:

  • include important information
  • use big, bold writing
  • use bright, eye catching colours
  • Include pictures of the product

In Maths we continued our work on addition and subtraction, looking at strategies to solve missing number sums. We are making the link between addition and subtraction to help us to do this. For example:

? + 10 = 15         15- 10 =

In Art we learnt about blending using chalks. We studied the Northern Lights and created beautiful pictures showing the Northern Lights over the Arctic. Then we followed step by step instructions on how to draw an arctic fox. We’re very proud of our pictures!

Here are some photos of our crafty Christmas creations:

Have a great weekend!

P2/3 Class of the Week

We are super stars! Miss Baillie and Mr Wells were so impressed with how hard working, kind and sensible we are that we won class of the week! Miss Prince is very proud of us.

In Literacy this week we have been retelling the story ‘The Secret of the Kelpie’, we picked out the main points in the story and ordered them in the correct sequence. We also worked on punctuation – full stops, question marks and exclamation mark. This was tricky but we learnt that we use exclamation marks if the sentence is exciting, surprising or if the person is shouting.

In Maths we have been working on subtraction – 2 digit take away a single digit. We enjoyed solving subtraction sums on robot function machines. We used number lines to help us and remembered to jump back in 5s and 10s to solve subtraction sums quicker.

In Art we learnt how to draw a Kelpie. We also painted a Scottish landscape for our Kelpie to live in. We found that mixing green with blue created a realistic colour for the loch. We’re really pleased with how our pictures have turned out:

Have a great weekend,

P2/3 at The Kelpies

In Literacy this week we wrote a recount of our day at The Kelpies, we all remembered to sequence our writing in the correct order and we included time connectives such as First, Next and Finally.

Here is D.O’s recount of our day:

On Tuesday 14th November we went to The Kelpies on our school trip. First we went to the visitor centre and we saw a gigantic Lego Kelpie and a video of how the Kelpies were made. Next a man called Andy took us to the canal and he told us that the Kelpies were not real it was meant to tell you to stay away from water because it is dangerous. After that we got a whiteboard and pen to draw The Kelpies then Andy said that we could go inside the Kelpie. The door opened by itself and I said we’ve been eaten by the Kelpies! Inside I saw a rusty horseshoe. Finally, we went to the park and played. My favourite part was going inside the Kelpies.

In Maths we have been working on addition (2 digit + a single digit), we used numicon and number lines to help us. Next week we will be working on subtraction. In mental maths we are getting really good at recalling the 3 times tables, we love the 3 times tables song!

Miss Prince made our reading corner into an underwater Kelpie Cave, we had lots of fun playing in there today 🙂

Have a lovely weekend,

P2/3 and the sparrows

In Literacy this week we have been learning about adjectives (describing words). We started out Big Writing adventure and helped Emily learn about the nocturnal animals that visit her garden. We wrote fantastic sentences using adjectives to describe the animals.

In reading we read ‘The Secret of the Kelpie’ and we discussed how the story of the Kelpies was created, by passing it down through the generations. We are so excited for our trip to The Kelpies next Tuesday!

In Maths this week we continued to work on addition with 3 single digits and we started to learn the 3 times tables. We figured out that we already knew lots of them! We found some cool songs to help us to learn them.

On Thursday, we joined P2 to practise our balance and mindfulness, completing a Moana themed yoga workout in the hall. Miss Prince was very impressed with our concentration and balance!

We discovered that birds are living outside our classroom window. We did some research and found out that they are called sparrows. CC found out that they don’t like loud noises so we made a sign to remind people to be quiet. We also made bird feeders out of string and cheerios to encourage the sparrows to visit us! We’ll keep you posted on how this goes next week.

We are growing in confidence during our show and tell sessions, using a clear voice and making eye contact with the audience.

DG was our star of the week for improvement in his pencil control, super work!

Fun, fireworks and fitness (P2/3)

We got the week off to a great start with the Halloween Hop, take a look at our spooky costumes! We enjoyed dooking for apples, making Halloween masks and playing Mrs Gordon’s party games. Thank you to the parents for organising this for us.

In Maths this week we have been adding 3 single digit numbers. We used strategies to help us do this quickly such as looking for number bonds to 10 and starting with the biggest number.

In Literacy we started our Big Writing Adventure on descriptive writing, we look forward to sharing this with parents next Tuesday morning. We also worked on sequencing a story about Bonfire Night in the correct order, this was a good way of practising our reading skills.

In Art, Miss Prince challenged us to a ‘no paint brush’ challenge, we used card, cotton buds and straws to create fantastic Linlithgow Palace firework paintings. We’re really pleased with how they turned out!

In PE, we are working on our fitness and setting ourselves personal goals each lesson. We enjoyed completing our fitness circuit activities outside in the sunshine on Thursday.

Nativity Practices are in full swing for the P2s and the P3s have started learning about the legend of the Kelpies. We can’t wait for our trip to the Kelpies on Tuesday 14th November!

Enjoy the fireworks this weekend and stay safe.

P3 Blog – week beginning 24th October

On Thursday P3 were revising colours in French. We played a game that involved the children running for the correct colour of paper when the name was called out in French. They did a great job remember all the colours!

We have also enjoyed listening to the story The Witches by Roald Dahl. Mrs McVay loves the children’s enthusiasm for reading and identifying good WOW words in our story.

On Friday we were doing our BIG Maths Challenge against the clock. We then did some Halloween themed art by making table decorations to take home.

Spooky Symmetry in P2/3

Welcome back everybody! What an exciting term we have planned!

P2 have already started practising their Nativity songs and P3 will be starting their topic on Lari Don and the Kelpies very soon.

This week we have been learning about symmetry and completing spooky symmetrical patterns. Take a look at our symmetrical pumpkins:

In Phonics this week we have been working on a-e and nk. We made the words using our tinker tray objects and our new magnetic writing boards. We also practised our pencil control, super work, Oliver!

Our outdoor learning focus  is seeds, berries and blossom. We learnt about the lifecycle of an oak tree. The cycle is acorn – seedling – sapling – oak tree. Did you know an oak tree does not produce acorns until it is 20 years old!

Here are some photos of our outdoor learning afternoon with P3, we made fairy dens, built bird nests and made our initials out of natural resources.

We won class of the week for always working calmly and sensibly. What a lovely day to get extra playtime!

Have a lovely, sunny weekend!

P2/3 blog

Welcome to this week’s blog. If you haven’t already seen it, check out the link to our performance of ‘How Far I’ll Go’ from Moana. We are stars!

On Monday we worked with P3 to make game boards to test our knowledge of Maui and Scotland. We are looking forward to finishing and playing the games next week.

We loved making our leaf collage owls, thank you to all those of you who collected leaves and thank you to Mrs Bain for helping us! Miss Prince was very impressed with our owl storyboards, you will get to see these and our finished owls on parent night next week 🙂

In Phonics this week we wrote our sounds in moondust, with magnetic letters, with fancy pens and play doh.

Our Star of the Week is Daniel for fantastic effort in Writing. We loved his story about Plop the owl and Santa. Well done Daniel!

Children will get their Sumdog usernames and passwords on Monday. This is a fantastic online resource that we will be using in class and as a home learning task.

Have a great weekend!
