P1c Visit to Blackness Castle – 15th May

As part of our social studies learning about people in the past, yesterday we visited Blackness Castle. We have been learning about how people in the past lived differently so we enjoyed  a tour of the castle and also handling some ancient artefacts.

The weather was lovely so we also enjoyed eating our lunch outside!

As a surprise end to our day there was great excitement when Richard from Historic Scotland, knighted us  – Lords and Ladies of Blackness!

A big thank you to our parent helpers ( Sophia’s dad and Lewis’s mum!)  and Mrs Smith for coming along to help us – we hope you enjoyed your day too!

P1a Visit to Botanic Gardens

Today we visited the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh to learn why SWAF is important for bears and animals.  SWAF stands for SHELTER, WATER, AIR and FOOD.  We enjoyed taking part in lots of games and activities and of course the teddy bear’s picnic (which unfortunately had to be indoors due to the weather).

A big thank you to Mrs Fullerton for joining us at short notice after I had sent letters saying that we would not need parent helpers today.

P1a China topic activities – 28th February

This term as well as learning about Scotland we have been learning about China too and as you will know this was the theme for our fantastic assembly.

We have  watched a video about primary schools in China and we saw that the children painted their numbers and this was something that we wanted to try.  However it wasn’t quite as easy as it looked on the video!

We also made a Chinese shape puzzle called a tangram.  It is made of 7 pieces that fit together but can also be used to make lots of other shapes and silhouettes but they must not overlap. Even though we cut up our own puzzles – only 2 of us could put them back together again! We did all persevere though and didn’t give up  or complain when we found it hard.  We have been talking a lot about growth mindset and this task was a good example of having to keep trying different ways and think positively.

Below is a link to an online tangram puzzle that you can try.

This week our story writing also had a Chinese theme.  We have noticed that lots of the stories we have been reading include dragons so decided to write our own dragon stories.  At the start of our writing lessons we always share our ideas with our elbow partners for 5 minutes.  We  have a special cat timer to let us know when the 5 minutes is up and we then share our ideas with the rest of the class before we draw our pictures and write our stories.

You will be able to read more of our stories in our jotters at the Parents’ meetings in March.

Internet Safety Day and Mango Tasting in P1a!

This week we have been talking about what we think the internet is! (Please note – all of the children took part in the discussion but they did not all want to be filmed!)

We played some games with our buddies about staying safe when using the internet.  The games included talking about things like not sharing passwords or logins and what to do if something pop ups on the screen and you don’t know what it is or don’t like it.   We have learned that we should always tell a grown up.  Here are some photos of us playing the internet safety game with our buddies.

The buddies also helped us to play another game which was  all about emotions –  which as you will probably know is something else we are learning about this term.  Hopefully we will now be able to play this game in the classroom with each other.

We are enjoying learning all about China and rehearsals are well underway for our assembly next week.  Miss McDermott read a famous Chinese story all about the Monkey King.

In the story, the monkeys eat mangoes and collect them from the trees.  Lots of us hadn’t seen or tried mango so today for a little treat we had mango for snack.  Some of us helped Mrs Smith to cut up the mango ( and remembered our good handwashing skills first).  We did a quick hands up survey and most of us seemed to enjoy it – just like the monkeys in the story!!!

P7A Defenders in Action

Well done to all the P7 pupils who took part in their mock trials this evening. They were confident, well-prepared, well-behaved and enthusiastic. We were impressed by their persuasive arguments and their cool, calm and collected approach under pressure. Here are a few snaps of P7A in their case against St Mary’s (Leith). JP

P6A visit to Edinburgh Zoo

P6A had a great day at the zoo yesterday.

We watched the tapir and her baby walking round their enclosure.  It was interesting to see that the baby looked totally different to his mum with his watermelon stripes.

This koala was sleeping in what looked like a very uncomfortable position.  We noticed he had 3 fingers and 2 thumbs on each front paw and decided we would find out how he used them.

We were able to stand really close to the wallabies as we walked through their open enclosure.

The tiger spent the whole time walking from one side of his enclosure to the other.  We wondered why he walked backwards and forward along the same path – was he thinking about something?   We also saw how the stripes on his fur helped to camoflage his body in the long grass.

We didn’t see the giant pandas but learned from their keeper about how giant pandas have adapted from omnivores to eating bamboo with the development of a thumb-like digit on their front paws.

We visited the penguins and learned about their life cycles and breeding habits. Josie told us you can only find out whether penguins are male or female by a blood test.  We also learned that the King penguins one of three species at the zoo are the second biggest of all penguins.

We visited many of the monkeys but learned most about the gibbons.  Did you know all buff cheeked gibbon babies are born beige and the males turn black at puberty? The family have a ‘song’ they sing every morning to tell other gibbons this is their territory.  Gibbons also sing to find a mate – if they like the song they hear they will pair up for life. This photograph shows the close link between monkeys and humans:

Finally we learned that Edinburgh Zoo usually have two male rhinos.  When they hit puberty they have to be separated because they fight trying to decide who is boss and so they go to other zoos to find a mate.  Our most amazing fact of the day: a baby rhino can drink up to FIFTY pints of milk a day.

We all gave our trip to the zoo a very high score out of ten – our only complaints were that we wanted to stay longer and that some animals were not outside for viewing (lions and pandas).

We will be learning more about animal adaptations in the next few weeks and we wonder where our next trip will be.

P1a – Castles and Crowns

As part of our Fairy Tales focus and our learning in social studies our topic is now Jack and the Beanstalk.  As you know Jack climbed to the top of the beanstalk and into the Giant’s castle – today it wasn’t quite so exciting as climbing to the top of a beanstalk but it was very exciting heading off on the bus to Blackness Castle on our very first school trip!  Thank you to all our parent helpers who ensured we had an enjoyable and safe visit.

You will see from the photographs that as well as having a look round the castle we had a short talk from a Historic Scotland guide and enjoyed handling lots of castle artefacts too.  (Please note that some of the children did not want to try on the chainmail and/or helmet.)

In the afternoon we talked about people who might have lived in the castle and practised our Jolly Phonics sound for this  “c”.  We then made these lovely crowns and practised our royals waves!

Sombrero Week in P5A, by Grace and Halle

On Monday, P5A opened a box, which contained a small Mexican hat called a Sombrero.

This week, we have been doing various tasks, including research, project work and activities on where we think it has come from and who sent it.

On Tuesday, some pupils from P5A were researching various aspects of Mexico, such as the Aztecs, Mexican clothing, Mexican food and lots of other things. Using this research they created a class book.

On Wednesday, P5A designed some sombreros of our own. There were many different designs ranging from sunshine yellow ones to ocean blue ones.

On Thursday, P5A brought their fantastic designs to life by using many different and unusual resources such as pipe cleaners, buttons, the lot! Some of us could not stick to our designs, due to the intricate detail and lack of time.

So, as you can see, we had an amazing time investigating this mysterious hat!

P7A Creativity Challenge

P7A have been looking after a mysterious box for the last few days.  Today was the day to open it…

Inside was a crest wrapped in a blanket – we brainstormed some ideas of what the crest might mean, where it was from, what is was and what the symbols meant.  After a bit of research we came up with some ideas…

Then we worked to think of creative things we could do – we had loads of different ideas.

Right now, we’re working on some of the suggestions we cameup with.  We’ll post up some of the final creative activities!

Brown paper packages tied up with string…

On Friday morning, P5A received an intriguing package, wrapped in brown paper and tied up with string.

We spent some time handling our mystery parcel and discussing it. We wondered where it had come from, why it had been sent to us and, most importantly, what might be inside.

After waiting and wondering for three long days, we finally opened our parcel this afternoon. There was great excitement, lots of speculation, and some worry (from Mrs Paton) that Robert might cut his fingers on the scissors!

At last, the box was open. Buried inside layers of tissue, we pulled out…a tiny felt hat, covered in sequins and embriodery.

Most excited of all was our Circle Time pet, Happy Lion. He was delighted to find that the hat was a perfect fit!

We quickly set about writing down all of our big questions about this unusual hat. Where did it come from? Who sent it to us? What sort of hat was it? Which culture did it belong to? What could we learn from it?

We visited the school library and consulted Dr Google. Our suspicions were confirmed. We had received a tiny sombrero all the way from Mexico. We discovered that the name ‘sombrero’ comes from the Spanish word for shade. This wide brimmed hat was originally designed to offer protection from the sun.

Next, we discussed where we could take our learning from here. Would we design and make our own hats? Would we find out more about the traditions, customs and traditional dress of Mexico? Would we explore politics, religion or culture? Could we write our own music, or find out about traditional Mexican musical instruments? Could we explore different types of hats? Perhaps we could write our own poetry, adventure stories or factual reports about hats. We even discussed the possibility of learning a new language or writing to new pen pals.

So, where to begin? P5A, it’s over to you!
