P1c Visit to Blackness Castle – 15th May

As part of our social studies learning about people in the past, yesterday we visited Blackness Castle. We have been learning about how people in the past lived differently so we enjoyed  a tour of the castle and also handling some ancient artefacts.

The weather was lovely so we also enjoyed eating our lunch outside!

As a surprise end to our day there was great excitement when Richard from Historic Scotland, knighted us  – Lords and Ladies of Blackness!

A big thank you to our parent helpers ( Sophia’s dad and Lewis’s mum!)  and Mrs Smith for coming along to help us – we hope you enjoyed your day too!

P1c Scottish Celebrations – 25th January

This week we have been listening to lots of Scottish stories and talking about Scots words. We learned that Robert Burns was famous for writing Scots songs and poems and today we celebrated his birthday by having our own Burns Supper in class.

This included toasts to the laddies and lassies which we had written ourselves and a toast to the haggis (crisps!) read by Mrs Smith.  We enjoyed our Scottish snacks which also included shortbread and tablet that Mrs Smith had kindly made for us.  As you will see from the photographs there was lots of dancing to Scottish music! At our Scottish assembly we sang Heid, Shooders, Knaps an Taes – not a traditional Scots song but a nice way to end our special Scottish morning!

P1a Scottish Celebrations – 25th January

This afternoon we got dressed up in tartan and held our very own special Scottish celebration.  We have learned how Scottish people all over the world remember Robert Burns today by holding Burns suppers. So we did something rather similar!  We had lots of Scottish music, Miss McDermott read the Selkirk Grace, Mrs Ritchie read the toast to the haggis (crisps) and we even had written our own toasts to the laddies and lassies! After our haggis crisps and shortbread snack we had lots of dancing which you can see on the video clips! Happy Burns Day everyone!

P4 Electrical Engineers

This week in P4 we have been learning about Electricity and creating our own circuits.

We found out about James Bowman Lindsay (1799-1862). A Scottish Scientist who was said to be one of the earlier inventors of the incandescent lamp.

Here we are creating our own circuits to light our lamps and trying to match electrical symbols to their names. Did you know that electrical symbols are universal symbols, recognised Worldwide?

P7A Defenders in Action

Well done to all the P7 pupils who took part in their mock trials this evening. They were confident, well-prepared, well-behaved and enthusiastic. We were impressed by their persuasive arguments and their cool, calm and collected approach under pressure. Here are a few snaps of P7A in their case against St Mary’s (Leith). JP

P1a – Castles and Crowns

As part of our Fairy Tales focus and our learning in social studies our topic is now Jack and the Beanstalk.  As you know Jack climbed to the top of the beanstalk and into the Giant’s castle – today it wasn’t quite so exciting as climbing to the top of a beanstalk but it was very exciting heading off on the bus to Blackness Castle on our very first school trip!  Thank you to all our parent helpers who ensured we had an enjoyable and safe visit.

You will see from the photographs that as well as having a look round the castle we had a short talk from a Historic Scotland guide and enjoyed handling lots of castle artefacts too.  (Please note that some of the children did not want to try on the chainmail and/or helmet.)

In the afternoon we talked about people who might have lived in the castle and practised our Jolly Phonics sound for this  “c”.  We then made these lovely crowns and practised our royals waves!

40 Years of Palace Guiding at Linlithgow Primary!

Historic Scotland ran a competition with our up coming guides to design a 40th Anniversary Logo. The competition was won by Charlotte Casey and Ellie McDonald.

The logo by Charlotte and Ellie is featured in the web news story. A press release has gone out too and STV are interested as well as local and national press. The 40th anniversary event tickets are on Eventbrite.  The event will take place at Linlithgow Burgh Halls on Sunday 13th August. All welcome.

‘Curse of the Stewarts’ – Film Premiere

Last night saw the Premiere of the ‘Curse of the Stewarts’ – 6 short films created by pupils from S2 at Linlithgow Academy and performed by all our P6 pupils here at Linlithgow Primary.

S2 Created the scripts and our P6 pupils acted them out. They were filmed at various locations down at the Palace by a professional film company. These short funny films will be used to help visitors to the Historic Scotland Website engage with some colourful characters of our past; James I, James II, James III, James IV, James V and Mary Queen of Scots.

P7A Creativity Challenge

P7A have been looking after a mysterious box for the last few days.  Today was the day to open it…

Inside was a crest wrapped in a blanket – we brainstormed some ideas of what the crest might mean, where it was from, what is was and what the symbols meant.  After a bit of research we came up with some ideas…

Then we worked to think of creative things we could do – we had loads of different ideas.

Right now, we’re working on some of the suggestions we cameup with.  We’ll post up some of the final creative activities!
