P1c Learning Update 29 April

Miss McDermott and Mrs Smith were delighted to see us all back safely for our last term together as P1c. We also welcomed 2 new children to our class and we hope that they enjoy learning and taking part in all the super activities at Linlithgow Primary School with us.

This term one of our topics is Fairy Tales and Traditional Stories and we have started this by reading a  rhyming and lift the flap story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Unfortunately as you know, Goldilocks is rather naughty in the story so we made and displayed some WANTED posters.

Our first team challenge this term was based on the book “A Chair for Baby Bear”.

We worked in teams of 3 to design and build new chairs for our own baby bear using different construction materials. We had to make sure that he would fit comfortably on the chair and that the chair would not fall over.  As you will see from the photographs most of the groups came up with fantastic designs to complete the challenge.

Our second team challenge was to retell the  Goldilocks story using puppets and trying to use “character voices”.  First of all we made the stick puppets and then decided who would be each character.  This was quite tricky as there were 4 characters and only 3 of us in each group. Miss McDermott was very pleased as she did not need to help any of the groups to sort this out!  We then had some practice time before we performed our puppet shows to each other.  There was much laughter at our different “bear” voices!

We have also enjoyed reading the story “Who’s Been Eating My Porridge?” by Nick Ward which includes a very strange porridge monster and a porridge party.

So we decided to end the week by having our very own porridge tasting party, helped of course by Mrs Smith!  We all tried some plain porridge and some sweet porridge to see which one we liked best.  Some of us however, didn’t like any of them (as you might be able to tell from our faces!!) but we did try them which was the important thing.

P1c Pumpkin Soup Making – 24 October

It might not quite be Hallowe’en yet but P1c are getting in the mood. This morning we enjoyed  reading the story Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper, then we got busy carving pumpkins and making our own pumpkin soup.

Today we not only practised cutting the vegetables but also grating them too. After playtime we enjoyed having the soup with some bread for snack.   A big thank you to Mrs Smith and Mrs Kemsley (our student teacher from Edinburgh University) for their help this morning.

A “cracking” time in P1c – 3rd Oct

This week we have been learning the sound ‘e ‘ and the Jolly  Phonics action is to pretend that you are cracking an egg. So we decided to crack some  real eggs and  made some delicious omelettes for snack today.  Everyone passing the classroom stopped to ask what the lovely smell was! As you can see most of us enjoyed eating the omelettes too! Thank you to Mrs Smith who was our head chef today.

P1c One Planet Picnic – 27 Sept

Today we enjoyed preparing our Scottish Cheddar cheese and Linlithgow apples grown in Iona’s garden for the One Planet Picnic. As you can see in the photographs we all took turns at cutting and putting the cheese and apples on the cocktail sticks.  Thank goodness we have been practising our fine motor skills over the last few weeks – we were all fantastic and no one got jabbed or stabbed! The best part however, was getting to eat  the snack at the picnic where we also had some Scottish oatcakes and some carrots which had been harvested from the school garden with a little help from Mrs Spori!

Unfortunately due to the weather the picnic was in the hall.

Here are some photographs of different activities that we have been doing over the last few weeks to help develop our fine motor skills.

P1a Lego, Marmalade and Science Week – 18th March

Since we started in P1 we have been practising our fine motor skills to make the muscles in our hands and fingers stronger.  We do this in lots of different ways and in lots of different curricular areas.  For example – using scissors for cutting, using the tweezers for picking things up, finger painting, threading things such as beads etc. The photos below show just some of these and the results of all this practice – look at how fantastic we are getting at handwriting!

In maths we are continuing to add and subtract numbers within 10 and one of our favourite activities at the moment is a Lego game where we have to add or take away bricks.  The winner is the person with the largest tower.

Miss McDermott had bought a new book about Paddington Bear in London when she was there at the February weekend. We enjoyed listening to the story but lots of us hadn’t tried Paddington’s favourite snack – marmalade sandwiches.

With Mrs Smith’s help, we made a selection of different marmalade sandwiches and had a little tasting session. You will see from the photographs we had a visitor in the middle of the tasting session!   We then collected the data about our favourites and used this to create a chart.  Miss McDermott also showed us how you can do this on the computer – much quicker!

This week was British Science Week and our focus was on different things that can be pushed  and pulled.  We linked this to our reading as we used a non fiction book to follow instructions and make a “bug” that worked by pulling the strings to make it move. We also practised our fine motor skills as we had to cut and thread.

Internet Safety Day and Mango Tasting in P1a!

This week we have been talking about what we think the internet is! (Please note – all of the children took part in the discussion but they did not all want to be filmed!)

We played some games with our buddies about staying safe when using the internet.  The games included talking about things like not sharing passwords or logins and what to do if something pop ups on the screen and you don’t know what it is or don’t like it.   We have learned that we should always tell a grown up.  Here are some photos of us playing the internet safety game with our buddies.

The buddies also helped us to play another game which was  all about emotions –  which as you will probably know is something else we are learning about this term.  Hopefully we will now be able to play this game in the classroom with each other.

We are enjoying learning all about China and rehearsals are well underway for our assembly next week.  Miss McDermott read a famous Chinese story all about the Monkey King.

In the story, the monkeys eat mangoes and collect them from the trees.  Lots of us hadn’t seen or tried mango so today for a little treat we had mango for snack.  Some of us helped Mrs Smith to cut up the mango ( and remembered our good handwashing skills first).  We did a quick hands up survey and most of us seemed to enjoy it – just like the monkeys in the story!!!

Harvest Haul

Today, some pupils from P7A spent some time in the school garden harvesting the vegetables that we have been growing over the summer.

We dug up carrots, radishes, shallots, turnips and A LOT of onions! We were delighted and surprised to find lots of wonky looking veggies, particularly our carrots!

We have been busy weighing, washing and trimming the veggies ready to be shared with the school.

If you would like to take some of our school veggies home to try, please ask Ms Orskov for some this week. You’ll need to be quick, as stocks are limited, so it will be on a first come, first served basis.

All we ask is that you take a picture of yourself creating something yummy with your veggies and send it in to us. You can email it to the school office for the attention of Ms Orskov at wllinlithgow-ps@westlothian.org.uk

Good luck with your recipes! We look forward to seeing pictures of your creations.

P2/1 learn about farming crops with Mr Hogg

This afternoon P2/1 were delighted to welcome Finlay’s grandad, Mr Hogg into class.  He showed us a short video all about the farm he manages in East Lothian and we learned all about planting, growing and harvesting crops such as brussel sprouts, potatoes, carrots ,parsnips and cabbages.

Mr Hogg brought lots of things with him for us to look at including the tiny seeds that grow into the crops as well as some freshly harvested crops which most of us enjoyed tasting.

We had lots of fun investigating the crops and seeds and playing with them in our own farm shop.

We asked lots of questions all about farming and were very surprised to learn that the brussel sprouts only take four 4 months to grow from a tiny seed into a large plant ready to harvest and eat.  As you can see the plant is nearly as big as a P1!

Thank you very much to Mr Hogg for coming to spend the afternoon with us and for giving us all our very own bag of sprouts to take home!
