This week in Primary 6…

This week we learned how to set up a fish tank.  We had to research to find out what equipment we needed and what steps we had to take to set it up successfully.  After that we wrote instructions for how to set up the tank.  In the afternoon we followed these instructions.

“We washed out the gravel and put it in the tank carefully.” – Leon

“I really enjoyed washing the gravel and liked learning about all the different types of goldfish.” – Rowan

“Then we added tap water and dechlorinator. ” – Cameron

“We had to measure the length, width and height of the tank.  Then we multiplied them.  We used 5 whiteboards to work out the answer.  This was to calculate the volume of the tank.  We then knew we had to put in 3 capfuls of dechlorinator.” – Cameron & Leon

“I actually really enjoyed the maths!” – Leon

“It was hard but we both did it together and that made it better.” – Cameron

“Next we attached the filter.” – Logan F

“I had to attach the flow director and then stick the filter to the side of the tank.” – Logan Y & Callum

“The filter cleans the tank.  It takes in the dirty water and puts out clean water.” – Charlie

“I attached the tubing to the air pump and Cade and Silvester helped to put it in the tank.” – Kyle

“The air pump puts little bubbles into the tank to put oxygen into the water which the fish need to breathe.” – Murray

“The fish have gills to breathe.” – Zoe

Our tank is now ready to be decorated.

“You can’t just dump fish in the tank though.  You have to float the bag on the top of the water so that it gets up the right temperature.” – Charlie

We’ll be visiting a pet shop soon after the holidays and we can’t wait!

This week in P6…

We’ve had another busy week!

Newsround reported on the fact that energy drinks could soon be banned for under 18s.  This caused some debate so we investigated why energy drinks are harmful to children and young people and wrote a short report on our findings.

“Energy drinks have lots of sugar and caffeine which can affect your brain negatively and also how you behave.” – Zoe

“They can make you feel dizzy, have chest pains and you can also start shaking.” – Finlay

“I’m happy to be representing P6!” – Luke

Some people tried out for the Basketball team this week and are looking forward to finding out on Monday.

In maths we spent some time exploring what is meant by place value and we worked from thousandths all the way up to billions.  We got to grips with using Cuisenaire rods again and we had a go at representing 2 and 3 digit numbers using the Base 10 materials.

“We played a good game (Who Wants to be a Hundredaire?) but it was quite hard.We did it in the end!” – Rowan, Charlie & Natalie

We also completed our Class Charter (with the exception of a few bits to finish from people who were absent). The rights we chose to be reminded of are:

Article 13 – You have the right to find out things and share what you think with others, by talking, drawing, writing or in any other way unless it harms or offends other people.

Article 29 – Your education should help you to use and develop your talents and abilities.  It should also help you learn to live peaceful, protect the environment and respect other people.

Article 31 – You have the right to rest and play.

Our first week in P6…

We learned about the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child.  We had to read all 54 articles and choose 3 which we felt were important to our class.  We will use our Class Charter to remind us of these rights and explain how we will ensure everyone’s rights are met.  We are in the process of creating a Class Charter using a phone and emoji theme.

“I enjoyed designing my emoji.  It was based on Grumpy Cat.” – Matthew

We did a STEM challenge which was to build a structure at least 30cm tall which could support the weight of an orange for at least 10 seconds.  We could only use newspaper, scissors and tape.  All teams completed the challenge so we then extended it to see who could amend their structure to hold the most oranges.

“I enjoyed the challenge because we started to build it and then we had to think to improve it.” – Murray

“We enjoyed eating the oranges at the end because our team won!” – Natalie & Hayley D

In PE we played the Hoop Hop Showdown where you have to jump in hoops until you meet someone from an opposing team.  When you meet, you play Rock, Paper, Scissors and the winner stays on.  You have to watch carefully so you know when it’s your turn.

“It was really great and fun, yo!” – Charlie & Callan

“It was amazing!” – Lewis

“It was really fun and then at football training we did something similar.” – Calum

Here are some of the things we are looking forward to:

Science Club

There was lots of excitement in science club this week. The children discovered that there has been a theft; a locked treasure chest has been stolen from the science lab! The children are all now forensic investigators and have been very busy finding clues and collecting evidence.  Mrs Smith & Ms King are sure that the LVPS forensics team will soon solve the crime!

Sophia – We are solving a crime. We put on gloves and shoe covers, so we don’t leave foot marks or prints at the crime scene. We found clues, there was a note and chocolate that has a bite out, so maybe the person was hungry. There was a glass with a finger mark, and we also found a pen and a spider. The treasure chest and the key have been stolen. We looked at our finger prints and two of mine has stripes and swirly patterns on them. I like science club because we are solving a crime.
