Learning Reflection for W/E 31.8.18

P1 have been very busy this week,  learning the sounds ‘a’ and ‘s’. We are very excited to be using the colourful consonants strategies to help us learn our sounds. You can find out more about this here:

It’s important we say the letter sound and not the letter name. To hear how we say the letter sound you can use the link posted up last week.

This week the children have been exploring the numbers 3 and 4. Most of us can sort and count to these numbers. The children have really enjoyed singing this counting song:

As you can see for the comments below the biggest challenge for the children this week was changing for PE. Please keep encouraging your children to dress independently at home!

Class Posts, General Information, Primary 3/2

This week in P2…

It’s been another busy week in Primary 2! In our learning about Road Safety, we explored safe crossing places and discussed the importance of holding an adult’s hand when crossing the road. In numeracy we have been finding numbers ‘more than’ and ‘less than’ and making numbers to 20 using practical materials. We also practised handwriting some patterns and the tall letter ‘l’ and had great fun creating art magic pictures using crayon and paint. In gym, we practised aiming with a small ball at a target and played some team games. This week we also chose our representatives for the Pupil Council and we are pleased to announce that Poppy and Arya will represent Primary 2 this year. They are very excited and  looking forward to their first meeting on Tuesday!

Pupil of the Week 31.08.18

It has been a delight to welcome Kalista to Primary 3 and lovely to see her receive our first Pupil of the Week certificate this session.  Kalista demonstrated excellent understanding of symmetry by colouring in a beautiful butterfly.  Well done Kalista.

P3 Weekly Reflection 31.08.18

Another busy week in Primary 3 as we continued our Road Safety learning with a focus on the Green Cross Code.  The children demonstrated excellent understanding of how to use the Green Cross Code when practising on our road in the playground.  It would be great if you could practise using the Green Cross Code when out and about.

This week in Maths we have been learning about symmetry and the children demonstrated their understanding by colouring in some beautiful butterflies.  We also practised rounding two and three digit numbers to the nearest 10.

On Wednesday, we started to learn about germs with Mrs Fraser.  When I asked the children what germs were, Luke N told me they are “little bug things”.  The children drew interesting pictures of what they thought a germ looked like.

Yesterday we listened to some great speeches from the children who wanted to be considered as the class representative for the Pupil Council.  It was a close call but after a class vote I am delighted to announce that Olly and Euan will be our new class reps.  They are looking forward to their first meeting next Tuesday.

P7 Week 2

This week we have been thinking about our mindset for learning. We have been working on some positive thinking and how to change what we say to be more open to new things. For example “I can’t do it.” becomes “I can’t do it yet.” or “I’m not as good as she is.” becomes “She is good at this, maybe she can help me.”

We have also been looking at our rights and have learned many more that we didn’t know about before.

We have elected our Pupil Council representatives for the year and they are Ben and Elise. The great thing was that 8 people went for it and some had to overcome lots of nerves to stand up and say their bit. I am very proud of them.

During our reflection time this week there was a common theme around applications for House Captains and Sports Captains.

Holly – Writing my Sports Captain speech was so hard. I couldn’t decide what to say.

Emmie – I had so many things to say in my House Captain speech and it was hard to decide which ones to keep so it didn’t go on too long.

Kaitlyn – The House Captain speech was hard to write because I’ve never done anything like that before.

Katie – I feel like in my writing I don’t use big words but I did in my speech for Sports Captain and in my poem too. I am getting better at writing.

Harry – I did better than I thought I would in the basketball trials. I enjoyed writing my House Captain speech even though it took me about 4 times to get it right.

Well done P7. Your willingness to give things a go is most impressive, and also I love the way you don’t just accept ‘good enough’ and always try to improve. That’s growth mindset in action.

Class Posts, Primary 5

This week in Primary 5…

Another busy week for P5 as we continue to read Harry Potter. We have been writing about our own wizards, using great descriptive words to bring their character to life. The children have also been finding out about the life of JK Rowling and how she got the ideas for Harry and his friends. We have designed wands for our Class Charter display and discussed our rights and responsibilities; also revisited Little Red Riding Hood to find out if the wolf was really as bad as he was reported to be…

Yesterday we carried out our Pupil Council Class Election. The children displayed some great inspirational writing and confidently delivered their speeches! I was very proud of every single child who stepped out of their comfort zone and applied for the Pupil Council posts. The whole class voted and Michael and Lily-Rose will represent P5 for this year. Congratulations to them both.

We have finished off our week with a Lego Challenge of having to create a 3D wizard using Lego, with only 15 mins to collaborate, share resources and support each other. The Wizards were awesome.

This week in P6…

We’ve had another busy week!

Newsround reported on the fact that energy drinks could soon be banned for under 18s.  This caused some debate so we investigated why energy drinks are harmful to children and young people and wrote a short report on our findings.

“Energy drinks have lots of sugar and caffeine which can affect your brain negatively and also how you behave.” – Zoe

“They can make you feel dizzy, have chest pains and you can also start shaking.” – Finlay

“They can cause you to put on extra weight because there’s so much sugar.” – Leon

 

Miss Greig taught us how to say and order the days of the week in Spanish.

“It was really fun and I loved the games!” – Katy

Some people delivered a short talk to the class about why they should vote for them to represent P6 in the Pupil Council.  Our winners were Luke and Aiden.

Some people tried out for the Basketball team this week and are looking forward to finding out on Monday.

In maths we spent some time exploring what is meant by place value and we worked from thousandths all the way up to billions.  We got to grips with using Cuisenaire rods again and we had a go at representing 2 and 3 digit numbers using the Base 10 materials.

We watched a video about Whitaugh Park (school camp) after letters were sent home this week.

We also completed our Class Charter (with the exception of a few bits to finish from people who were absent). The rights we chose to be reminded of are:

Article 13 – You have the right to find out things and share what you think with others, by talking, drawing, writing or in any other way unless it harms or offends other people.

Article 29 – Your education should help you to use and develop your talents and abilities.  It should also help you learn to live peaceful, protect the environment and respect other people.

Article 31 – You have the right to rest and play.

Primary 1

P1a’s Learning Reflection W/E 31st August

This week we have been very busy. In literacy we have been learning the sounds m, a and s. We have been learning how to say and write these sounds. We also did some writing. We wrote about a time when we felt happy. In numeracy we have been exploring the numbers 5, 4 and 3. We can count and write these numbers. In P.E we have been playing games and we did yoga with Ms King’s class. We took on roles of different animals and acted out the story Rumble in the Jungle. We have also been learning about road safety.

Primary 4

This week in P4.

We have been on our first outdoor excursion!  We went to the village and took the opportunity to sketch some of the houses and inn. We were taking note of the details such as drain pipes, chimneys and if the windows were in line or strange places. This work is to build the children’s awareness of houses to help them build a display in school which has been inspired by Laura Sayers’ visit.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On our return journey the children spotted berries, only one knew they were blackberries.  After discussion and confirmation they were safe some of the children tucked in to a quick snack!  However, close by there were also elderberries, I informed the children these were not so tasty and were best for the birds.

In maths the children are learning to break down times table questions to what they know, and to understand word problems. We have begun to explore what a legend is through work on the Dragon Slayer.

The children loved their first science lesson with Mrs Fraser on micro-organisms, and could tell me all about what they had learned. Well done P4.

Class Posts, General Information, Primary 3/2

Welcome to P2

It’s been a lovely start to the new school year and P2 have settled in very well to their new class. This week we have been establishing classroom routines and the children can now order their lunches independently! We began our Road Safety topic by discussing and drawing pictures of safe places to play. Next week we will explore safe places to cross the road and begin learning the Green Cross Code. In numeracy we revised number sequences to 20 and played some fun interactive maths games to help us work out the number before and after. We also enjoyed our welcome back assembly led by Mrs Mill where we discussed our school values.
