P1 Weekly Reflection 24.04.20

Hi everyone!

As we are still in Lockdown this is a reflection with a difference!  Instead of writing this with your help, I am sitting here scrolling through all the lovely emails from your parents.  It is great to see you all having such fun as you continue your learning at home.  Thank you to all your parents for their continued support in your learning, it is very much appreciated.

This week in literacy we have been learning the sound ‘ur’ and we were looking for ‘ur’ words in the story of Sam the Cat.  Well done to Zac, Eva and Georgie who found the 6 words – fur, curls, purrs, turn, hurt and nurse and to Sahasra who found 8 ‘ur’ words in her Mr Mischief  book.

I know many of you enjoyed the Piggy Bank activity as well and were able to identify the correct coins.  I particularly liked Lochlann’s idea of writing his spelling words on the pavement with chalk and on the window using whiteboard pens – I do hope you helped mum clean the window afterwards!

In Maths we were focusing on developing our understanding of money and in particular recognising all coins up to £2.

Many of you developed your coin recognition by creating shops and cafes at home, what a shame we aren’t allowed to go out or I could have popped round and done some shopping or grabbed a cuppa!

I hope you enjoyed the topmarks game, it proved to be a great hit with Euan in our house.

The work which Miss Whigham set us on the topic of Minibeasts has been very well received with lots of you taking advantage of the nice sunny weather to get outside and engage in many of the activities.  There’s been lots of minibeast hunts and some of you have done some great fingerprint painting of insects and bugs.

Isla and Georgie’s mums have chosen some books with a minibeast theme and linked a number of activities to these.  Georgie’s mum chose Caterpillar Butterfly by Vivian French and Georgie counted a number of minibeasts before creating a bar graph while Isla read What the Ladybird Heard and coloured in a beautifully symmetrical butterfly.

A special mention goes to this young lady who has made a tremendous effort this week in creating a wormery, a windchime and a bug hotel.  She also created her very own minibeast workout which she challenged Mrs Smith, Miss Whigham and I to complete.  I’m hoping it’s a sunny day tomorrow so I can do my challenge.

Our new topic of Under the Sea seems to be a popular one with a number of you having returned your Marine Biologist Application Form already, remember you can still send this in if you haven’t already done so.  Hopefully we’ll find out lots of information about the plants and creatures that live in the sea including how they manage to survive there.  Remember if you come across any interesting facts send them in so we can share them with everyone.

A big thank you to all those who have sent in their animal talks, including Lucia who spoke about hedgehogs and Sophie who spoke about bunnies.  Did you know that bunnies can see behind themselves without turning their heads?

Well it’s been a busy week and I look forward to receiving your emails next week with even more of your learning.  Next week’s learning grid will be posted on Monday but until then relax and enjoy some family time in the sun. You are all stars, keep smiling!

Have a lovely weekend.

P2 Home Learning Reflection for W/E 24.02.04

Usually I have the children here with me to comment on what we have enjoyed learning during the week. As this is not possible I am going to use the learning comments and pics which have been emailed to me. Thank you to everyone who has emailed me their child’s learning this week. It is great to see that you are keeping busy with some home learning. So here goes with our first lockdown learning reflection…

Marine Biologist Job Application

I have received several applications for the Marine Biologist job. Don’t worry if you have not submitted your application yet, you have until Friday 1st May to email it to me. There have been some very good replies to the questions and great suggestions about which sea creatures to study, please see  below:

Why do you want to learn about the sea?

I really like dolphins and turtles and I really like to swim in the sea. I try to look after the sea by not putting plastic products in it. I don’t drop litter and I use a reusable water bottle. I also like to take care of animals in the sea like turtles.

All different types of sea animals and what the animals eat.

There are lots of interesting sea creatures and colourful fish I would like to learn about.

What sea creatures would you like to study?

There have been some good suggestions about which sea creatures to study. So far there is interest in turtles, dolphins, sting rays, eels and starfish!

What do you already know about that animal?

They are endangered and they are good swimmers.

Stingrays are flat with long tails some can sting you. Blue nose dolphins are the most popular in the sea. Eels are like worms but much bigger. Starfish are shaped like a star, on top they are rough and the bottom is smooth.

In  numeracy this week P2 have been busy making doubles, making equal groups and finding a half.  It is great to hear how children are making links with their learning. Here are some learning comments from one mummy:  used his new found knowledge of fractions to work out the correct spacing for new monkey bars we built in the garden…He also really enjoyed applying his new knowledge of fractions when cutting sandwiches for lunch.

P2/1 Home Learning Weekly Learning Reflection W/E 24th April 2020

Good afternoon Primary 2/1. This is a strange weekly learning reflection for Miss Maclachlan to be writing as normally you would be with me and helping me to write it with your thoughts on your learning. I hope you have enjoyed your learning grids this week. I love seeing the photos that parents have been sending me along with your thoughts on your home learning. It’s good to see a variety of learning taking place. I am looking forward to receiving more emails so that I can continue to share in your learning.

P1’s Literacy learning has been focussed around the ‘ur’ sound and the tricky word ‘too’. In Numeracy and Maths the focus for this week was money and recognising all the coins up to and including £2. They could make their own shop and practice giving change from 10p. I have seen some fab photos of shops being created.

P2’s focus in Literacy this week has been on the ‘ee’ spelling pattern, correcting punctuation in sentences by putting in capital letters and full stops and choosing their favourite book to read and then draw and write about their favourite part of the book. In Numeracy and Maths the focus this week was on fractions and finding halves and quarters of shapes.

This term for our topic we are going to explore Under the Sea. I am excited for this topic and am looking forward to sharing in your learning. Thank you for the application forms received already for the role of marine biologist.

This week we have also been exploring Minibeasts. Some of us have been getting creative

“Making the centipede for my minibeasts task was my favourite thing.”

Have a lovely weekend and here are a few photos of the learning that has been taking place.

Good luck, I hope you get the job!

Say – Talk to your family about how many sea creatures can you think of, can you think of one for each letter of the alphabet?

Make – list or draw what you would like to learn about the ocean and what you already know. Have a think about what things you might need if you were going to learn about the sea. What might you need to keep safe at sea?

Do – start collecting some collage/junk materials for art work. Colour in the map and name the oceans in the world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dk8zDjQT0aE
