We have not been able to take photos this week but we have had an interesting short week. Mr Keast has continued to explore how to write a letter with children, We have tested our knowledge of fractions and are moving into identifying improper and proper fractions and mixed numbers. We had a fantastic time at the Badminton festival and all the children gave it their best, well done. We had a treat of a visiting music teacher who introduced the children to some instrument work. And we had a relaxing Friday finishing our poster for the school library, thinking about our learning over the past week and filing some of our loose leaf work in our folders.
We had great fun during Golden Time this week!
We enjoyed a performance by MK Duo, on Wednesday, when they played their guitars and mandolin for us. We have been continuing to learn to tell the time using o’clock, half past and quarter past…just ‘quarter to’ to conquer now!
We continue to enjoy using Sumdog on the computer to consolidate our numeracy.
We were learning about what kitchens were like in Granny’s day and watched a video from 1966 of a lady baking a cake. We spotted all the differences from then and now.
If any grandparents would like to come in and share what life was like as a child, please contact us through the school office. We would love to hear about games, toys and life in general- any objects or photos you have would also be welcomed!
We are almost finished learning to write the letters of the alphabet in capitals- we are getting really good at it. In literacy, we also learned what a homophone is and had fun playing a game about different homophones- ask us about it.
Have a nice weekend and enjoy any adventures that you get up to with Flat Stanley!

Hope you had a lovely long weekend. Although it was a short week P1 have worked very hard. In Literacy we have learned the vowel diagraph oo. We brainstormed and made lots of different words with the oo sound on our magnetic boards. We taught ted how to write oo words such as zoo. In numeracy we continued to explore fair sharing by playing a game called make it fair and having a teddy bears picnic. We also learned what a half is by using paper. In P.E on Wednesday we played different games such as traffic lights. It was good to run around. We had our star of the week circle time and our new star of the week is Euan. In music we listened to a lullaby and then had fun finding the beat and keeping it in different ways such as clicking our fingers. On Thursday afternoon we listened to a story about Katie Morag and discovered that she lived on the Isle of Struay which can be found on a map of Scotland as the isle of Coll. Here are a few of the children’s reflections:
Lois: “I found it hard learning the oo sound.”
Isaac: “I enjoyed our number talks.”
Ziva: “I enjoyed sharing out the picnic items fairly to the teddies.”
Sam: “I enjoyed being a class helper and going for the milk.”
Coben: “I found it tricky sharing equally during the teddy bears picnic.”
Ch: “I enjoyed learning about Katie Morag.”
Leighton: “I enjoyed listening to the story and learning about Katie Morag.”
Learning reflection for W/E 15.02.19
This week P1 have been busy learning the digraph ‘ow’ as in ‘blow the snow’ and the trigraph ‘igh’ along with tricky word be. In maths this week we have been exploring half of a shape and a number. The children have found out that some numbers can’t be shared to make two equal halves, sometimes there is one left over! They also made yummy play-dough pizza which they cut into two equal halves!
L – I got a pupil of the week certificate because I am a good reading partner.
N – I enjoyed making a pizza then cutting it in half.
J – We learned tricky word ‘be’ you can’t sound it out that’s why it’s a tricky word.
K – I liked learning tricky word ‘be’ it’s a tricky word because it’s not got the ‘e’ sound it’s the ‘ee’ sound.
Sub – We made Valentine cards, it is kind to make them. I gave mine to my Dad he said thank you!
Ch – I liked it when Mrs Mill was in class because it was fun!
Au – We made Valentine cards, we had to draw a love heart and get paper and rip it up then we put it on the heart and on the front. I made mine for Angus because I love him.
P – I liked going to P4 we drew a picture and Ms King was observing a number talk lesson. The P4’s know hard math questions and Mrs Smith said we could come anytime!
Chr – I liked doing math this week we made pizza, we were cutting them in half.
Al – We learned tricky word be, there are not two E’s in be there is only one but it makes the E sound!
T – I enjoyed the assembly this week the nursery were telling us about Valentine’s day. They sang songs, build up and I love you, you love me and it was Baby Shark!
Su – I enjoyed making the Valentine’s card, I made it for my Dad he said thank you and gave me a hug!
H – I was reading with Teria, I have a book called Barker, the dog was dirty and it made the bed all dirty!
R – I enjoyed the assembly today it was all about Valentine’s, people do kind things. I made by brother a Valentine’s card to tell him I love you!
So – I liked PE we did different balances like rocket and sitting star!
Have a lovely holiday weekend!

This week we were practising our spelling words using plasticine and art straws, it was not as easy as some of the children made it look! We have been learning about Magic ‘e’ and how it changes the sound of a vowel from it’s sound to it’s name. I wonder how many examples of magic ‘e’ words the children will be able to tell you?
In maths we have been learning about halves and quarters. We know that a quarter is half of a half and we talked about the numerator and denominator, tricky words but we are becoming more confident about what these mean!
In our topic work we have begun to look at key dates in the life of Ancient Egyptians and we talked about why the River Nile was so important to the Egyptians. We are looking forward to learning about hieroglyphics and the process of mummification in the next few weeks.
In P.E. we have begun to work on gymnastics and we have been practising our jumping and rolling this week. The star shaped forward roll using the springboard was a definite hit!
Here’s some of the children’s highlights:-
Luke C “I enjoyed when we did Humpty Dympty in different voices in Drama. I also like when the nursery sang Baby Shark.”
Joe “I liked doing rolls and especially the star jump forward roll in gymnastics.”
Rohan “I liked doing homophones with Mrs Stewart.”
William “I also liked the homophones.”
Kalista “I enjoyed learning about Egypt when we were learning about the timeline of important events.”
Have a lovely holiday weekend and I look forward to hearing all the children’s news on Wednesday.
For Chinese New Year we created our own Ming vases using blue pastels and looked at designs on photographs of Ming vases for inspiration. We then painted our backgrounds for the vases in ink and they have made a beautiful wall display for the classroom!
Look at how engaged we were at ERIC time (Everyone Reads In Class) today!
We also had a lovely assembly about Valentines Day by the nursery and then after Golden time talked about how impressed Mrs Cooper was with everyone including each other in their play and sharing their toys. The children reflected on a time they felt included and how it made them feel.
Have a lovely long weekend everyone!
Mrs Cooper
