Mad about Magnets in P3

Primary 3 were very excited to find out that they were going to be learning about magnetism in Science this term.  We quickly got to work to brainstorm what we already knew about magnets and what questions we had.  These questions are helping us to plan our investigations.

The most common misconception that we had was that all metal objects would be magnetic.  Some of us suspected that this may not be true but we had to investigate to find out more.

Ask us to tell you what we discovered!  Are all metal objects magnetic?  Why are only some coins magnetic?  What do the terms “attraction” and “repulsion” mean and what do they have to do with the North and South poles?

P4 Topic Linked Science

Ask the children what they did today?  What did they observe?  What were the differences between the different liquids?  Did the penny float or sink?  What about the grape and bottle top?

Maybe you could have a go at home?

Can you remember our lesson on distilling?  Is there a link?

What P7 Are Learning This Week

P7 are continuing to learn about fractions, decimals and percentages and the connection between them. This week we were revising how 1/10 can be shown as a decimal. We have also been investigating properties of fractions to see if we can come up with a ‘magic fraction’. Take a fraction and simplify it. Then reverse the digits of the numerator and the denominator and simplify the new fraction. It is a ‘magic fraction’ if both simplify to the same fraction.

We have also been having discussions about what is good or bad about being online. Pupils have been completing activities designed to see things from another person’s point of view. Sometimes online messages don’t come across the way we intend and many disagreements follow from that, so it can be useful to think about what the other person meant before jumping to conclusions.

Sportshall Athletics West Lothian Champions

We are delighted to announce that 20 members our P7 class have just been crowned the Sportshall Athletics West Lothian Champions. Way back in October the children were given the choice to take part in the athletics competition. Those who didn’t assisted Mr Stewart with recording times, setting up the athletics tracks and organising their peers into the correct groups. It was a real team effort. We took part in the competition alongside our cluster schools and in every event there were points to gain. We came 1st in our cluster event which was a super achievement in itself. We then had to wait until 6 other clusters held their event. The two schools with the most points would then go on to represent West Lothian at the Regional Championships. We just found out a few days ago that not only have we qualified but we are the winning primary school in the whole of West Lothian. A remarkable achievement. Well done to all members of the P7 class. We are very proud of you.

P1’s Visit from the Fire Brigade

P1 had a very exciting morning today. We were visited by the Fire Brigade. The station commander spoke to us in the classroom about the job of a fireman. We then got to see a real fireman (Rory) dressed in his full uniform and we spoke about why they wear each item. We went outside and all had a shot at using the hoses and some of us were lucky enough to get to sit in the engine before the Fire Brigade were called away. Here are a few photos from the visit:
