Update from P4/3

It has been another busy week in P4/3. We have been able to spend more time on our Egyptian topic and the children enjoyed learning why the River Nile was so important to the  Ancient Egyptians. We used our note taking skills to record information and discovered facts such as “The Nile would flood every year to help fertilise the soil for crops to grow” Brendan. As a class we enjoy directed drawings lessons. Not only does this improve our drawings skills, we have to listen and follow instructions to help create the best pictures. Here are some examples of our work:

In numeracy, we began to learn about the concept of multiplication. We discovered that multiplying is just “a quicker way of adding numbers together” Ethan. We explored sets of numbers and began to learn or revise the 2x, 5x and 10 x table. Please practise these tables with your child. The children love to add a competitive element to their learning and enjoy testing themselves against the timer in different games.

In literacy, we learned a new genre of writing, explanation writing. It was a little tricky for us to complete, but we will continue to practise over the coming weeks.

Have a lovely long weekend and I will check in with you next Friday.

Primary 1B Learning Highlights

This has been an exciting week in Primary 1B.

A pleasant Surprise!

On Monday we had a very extraordinary occurrence! After lunch we returned to our classroom to find a very suspicious trail of sparkly green glitter.

We followed the glitter all the way to our library corner, only to find a very burnt and stained rolled up piece of paper. It was such a mystery. We didn’t know what to think. Some of us thought a fairy or a leprechaun had been in our room. Upon reading the letter we found out it was actually from a very sad dragon, who had lost his home ‘Fairy Land’.

We have decided to help this sad dragon and rebuild Fairy Land in our classroom. We wrote some letters to ask Mrs Stewart if that would be ok because it’s going to be quite a big change!!

One of the problems the dragon had was that nobody was reading any Fairy tales anymore. We thought we would help out by reading the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. We decided that Jack definitely needed a beanstalk so we have started to make one alongside some sparkly magic beans because we all know that is how the beanstalk started! We used all sorts of different materials like, paint, collage and crayons, putting our artistic skills to good use. Some of us even added little beasties to the leaves in black pen. We definitely think the dragon will be impressed.

Watch this space for our final result, we think that Jack will be very pleased that he can climb his beanstalk again.

Health and Wellbeing

We were also very lucky this week to have the opportunity to meet Mrs Anderson (who has been delivering online Yoga sessions to us) in person!! Lotus Learn Yoga (her fabulous company) visited our playground on a very sunny Wednesday morning. We took part in a fun, energetic and dramatic yoga session. It was lots of fun and we cannot wait until our next session!

Thank you for reading our blog. This is only a snapshot of our very busy a super packed week in Primary 1B. We are looking forward to a lovely long weekend and hope that the sun shines for us.

Weekly Update From P1A

It has been a really exciting week in Primary 1. On Monday we came back from lunch to find a trail of green glitter and a letter in our library corner!

After a very exciting discussion we opened the letter and this is what it said…

All of the children agreed that we must help the dragon and the characters of Fairyland. The dragon asked us to rebuild Fairyland in our classroom, so we decided to write to Mrs Stewart and ask her if we could. Some examples below-

Thankfully she agreed. As the dragon mentioned Jack we decided to start by reading Jack and the Beanstalk. We have read 3 slightly different versions and enjoyed all of them. After reading we decided we needed to build and decorate a beanstalk with lots of leaves.

We now have lots of beautifully decorated leaves and magic beans to put on and around the beanstalk (I will hopefully be able to post a picture of completed beanstalk next week)

Writing – Narrative Genre

For writing this week we wrote a story about Jack and his adventure. The children had to write who was in the story, where it took place, what happened and how Jack felt. They all did a fantastic job!

Numeracy

This week we took our numeracy work outside. We made giant number lines and practised jumping forwards and backwards to remind us which direction to go in when we are adding and subtracting.

Health and Wellbeing

This week we had a yoga lesson with Mrs Anderson. The children enjoyed meditating, pretending to move like jungle animals and even enjoyed the relaxation at the end.

I hope you all have a lovely long weekend and I look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday 4th May. I will update you on our Fairyland progress next week.

P6/5

p6/5 week

Maths

This week in maths we have been learning about area. We also made posters finding the area of a rectangle and a triangle. Our class has also done centimetre square. Today we done time while calculating how many seconds are in an hour which we found out was 360.

Literacy

This week in literacy we have been doing SRAs the skill that is skimming and scanning. We have also been doing spelling activities in spelling.

Art

In art we did a vote on if we should draw a step-by-step drawing of a husky or a pug. The majority of the votes voted husky instead of pugs we all think we drew pretty well.

Presentations

we did pair work presentations with our table partners. Everyone did fairly different presentations from movies to Iphones to food.

That’s all for P6/5 this week.

This week in Primary 4

This week we have been busy once again!

In Numeracy we have continued working on our tables, with a focus on the 4x and 9x table. We looked at these in our Number talks before then working on these individually.

In Writing this week we started our new genre of Explanation Report Writing. We discussed how this sort of text had to be written in the present tense and also how this was not a text where we mention I or We or talk about our feelings. We worked together on our piece, creating a text about how bees make honey. This created some super discussion between us all. Read some of our pieces below:

In Reading we have continued to use our summarising skills. We have summarised our own group texts as well as another chapter of our novel. We need to ensure that we remember our punctuation as we write. Some of our pieces are below:

In our topic this week we have been looking at the different types of jobs the Egyptians may have done. We are going to use this further next week. We also created some line drawings of the Pharaoh – we had to ensure to include detail and take our time. Here are some of our drawings:

We will have a shorter week next week, but we will still have lots to do!

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

We got our new reading books and we were using your clarifying skills to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words. We also introduced echo reading this week. Echo reading is used to help us read with fluency and expression.

“We have been using echo reading this week. My teacher reads a page first and then I would read it back”.

“This made reading easier as it broke up the tricky words”.

We have been practicing our tricky words this week. We love to play games with our spelling words like quiz a friend.

“I have to look, say, cover, write, and check each word.”

In writing, we finished our information report genre. We researched and discussed Spring and then used this information to support us when writing our report.

Maths

In maths, we were continuing to solve times tables equations. We had to identify an effective strategy to help us calculate the answer. We all enjoyed using our skills to play times table snakes and ladders and times table bingo.

“Using pop its help me calculate the answer.”

“I used my fingers and counted in twos.”

Health and Wellbeing

This week, we started football for P.E. We were working on our dribbling skills, passing skills and keeping control of the ball.

“We were dribbling in and out of the cones.”

“We can to pass the ball to out team members.”

P7/6 Class Blog

We learnt to find  fraction from an amount.  We also identified the fraction from a shape.

We were looking at a picture while we wrote about what we seen in the picture for writing.  KS

We revisited how to use adverbs and adjectives.  For reading, we summarised a fiction text and we used a variety of comprehension strategies to show our understanding of a non fiction text.

For HWB, we focused on Relationships.  We have been learning about self- esteem, individual characteristics and attributes.
