Read, Write, Count
We loved coming to school in our jammies on Tuesday. All our lessons were about the book ‘ROCKETMOLE’. We created a fact file about ourselves during writing this week. Armstrong the Rocketmole wrote a letter to us asking for our help with addition. We were all every excited to receive our Read, Write, Count Bags.
Literacy
In writing, we were persuading the reader that reading was important. We had a class discussion before we started and we identified all the different ways that we use reading in our everyday life. When included powerful persuasive language and connecting words within our writing.
In P3/2 we worked very hard sounding out our spelling words. We continued with rainbow writing and using our words in sentences. This week, we also found making a chant a useful strategy to help us remember how to spell our words.
Maths
This week, we were learning about addition. When adding our numbers together we found number squares and sticks useful to help us calculate the answer. We were also working on addition word problems.
IDL
In our Vikings topic, we were learning about what food th
e Vikings ate. The Vikings did not have supermarkets like we have today and they could not import food from other countries. Therefore, the Vikings could only get food that they could grow and catch. To keep their meat and fish fresher for longer, the Vikings would salt or smoke them.
Wow what an exciting week we have had! Have a read to see what we have been up to!

P5 have had a fun week this week.
Christmas Card Competition
Mrs Stewart set the class a task of designing a Christmas card. Miss Stanway had a difficult job of picking a winning one because the standard was so high! This card will be sent out to a community group.
Summer – My card was a Christmas tree with a snowy window!
Health
Bella – Football is fun.
We love seeing Bella buzzing around enthusiastically like a rocket on the football pitch in her bobble hat although Oscar being successfully tackled by a large plant pot this week was a sight to behold!
Topic – Europe
This week we learnt about the Seville Fair that usually happens every year in Spain.
Colin – we designed a persuasive poster to encourage people to go to the fair.
Our success criteria for designing a good poster included detailed pictures of an appropriate size, colourful font and a persuasive slogan. Cameron knew it was important to make sure important information such as when and where it took place was included.
We listened to some flamenco music and many of the children were keen to have a go at being flamenco dancers.
Bailey enjoyed being a bull and Leo volunteered to be a matador with a swirling cape. This led to an interesting conversation about animal cruelty.
Music
We started our music sessions with ‘Limelight’ and have been practising using our body as a percussion instrument!
Numeracy
This week we have learnt different strategies for mental subtraction such as counting up to and we have used number lines to support our thinking.
Look out for our numeracy video coming soon!
Literacy
After reading this week, we practised writing a summary of what we have read. It is important to only include key information and make sure the facts are in the correct order. As we found this tricky, we agreed that it is a skill we need to practise.
Look out for our spelling strategy video coming out soon!
Compliment box
Jaxson was chosen this week and the class had several compliments to give him because he is so supportive and kind.
Homework
Some people brought in homework to share with the class, which was a very high standard. Well done everybody!
What a busy week in P4/3 as we have been working collaboratively (a skill for life) to discuss, organise, present and film our learning for parents/carers to view. Look out for the link being sent to your e-mail, so you can watch our amazing presenting skills and learn more about what takes place in class!!
Outdoor Learning
All of the class enjoy outdoor learning with Mrs Dobbie on a Friday morning. Here are some pictures which showcase the learning that takes place in our outdoor environment.
We continue to develop our literacy skills and participate in spelling activities on a daily basis. This consistent approach is certainly helping as some children are scoring 100% in their dictation assessments at the end of the week. Well done P4/3, keep up the good work.
Have a lovely weekend and I will check in with you next Friday.
The children have had another busy learning week. We have been doing lots of filming of our Sharing the Learning. The children hope you enjoy seeing them working hard in and around the school. Some of this weeks learning the children would like to share with you.
Literacy
Writing –
Our skills in persausive writing are developing really well (you can hear the children talking about them in our Sharing the Learning video). All the children are aware of what an opinion is and how to share it through their writing. This weeks topic was reading and why it is imoprtant. The children came up with lots of reasons such as -Sahel -“I will be able to read more books when I get older”, Conlon “I will have fun finding out new and interesting facts”etc. Some examples below-
“b” and “h” sounds
This week the children have been introduced to “b” and “h”. They have been blending these sounds with others that they already know to create words. Some children are now reading short sentences. I am very proud of them!
Within our Sharing the Learning video there is a short number talk where the children are encourged to share their counting strategies. The aim is to find the most efficent way. I hope you find it interesting. We have been counting collections to 20 as well as consolidating knowlege of number bonds within 10.
Health and Wellbeing
Last week the children discussed the important issue of bullying and what it means to be bullied. This week we focused on what to do if a friend was being bullied. Some responses
Sahel said “I would ask the bully why are you bullying my friend?” and he though his friend would be very sad.
Robbie said “I would make the bully say sorry”
Conlon said “I would tell an adult” and thought his friend would be angry.
Indie thought her friend would feel terrified.
We all agreed that you should tell the bully to stop and speak to a trusted adult.
Have a lovely weekend, and I will be back next week with more news from Primary One.
Health and Wellbeing
This week in health and wellbeing we have been continuing to focus on the topic of bullying. We have been discussing strategies to help us should we ever be a victim of bullying or should we see it happening in our playground. Here are some of our very sensible suggestions.
Jack – I would find out who the bully is and tell a teacher.
Saatvik – I would stick up for my friend and tell the bully to stop.
Cooper – I would help my friend to stop crying and play with them to keep them safe.
Kaleb – I would tell one of my trusted adults.
This week in our yoga session we were learning how to perform some yoga animal poses. We visited old Macdonald’s farm and had great fun being flapping chickens, galloping horses and dogs searching for bones! We are really enjoying our yoga sessions. Here are some examples of how it makes us feel.
Jack – Yoga makes me feel so calm and relaxed.
Mikah – Yoga makes me sit quietly.
Cooper – Yoga makes me patient.
Kaleb – Yoga makes me so happy.
Literacy
This week we reach our final week for focusing on the Persuasive writing genre. We have worked hard on this particular writing area and are feeling confident showcasing our learning with you all on our special videos (watch this space!) This week we have been writing about why reading is so important. Here are some examples of our work.
We were able to share verbally and through our sentences some of the reasons we believe reading is so important.
Arianna – I like reading because it is fun.
Alfie – I like reading because it is good for you.
Reuben- I like reading because it can make your brain smart.
Saatvik – I like reading because if you know how to read you can do anything.
We have also been learning two new common words, me and we. Our new sounds this week have been h and d.
Our word boost story this week has been ‘The Frightened Little Owl’, by Mark Ezra. We have enjoyed listening to the story and completing all the different activities. We are excellent at using and recognising all of the word boost words we have learned so far we are even beginning to understand the colours of the words and what they mean. (yellow – describing words- adjectives and red are doing words -verbs) This week’s Boost words are – familiar, tremble, tumble and vanish.
Maths
This week we have had a new focus for our maths work. We have been learning to recognise and name 2D shapes. We have been discussing their properties, how they look and how they feel. We have been using mathematical language such as edges, sides and corners as well as all the correct names for a number of 2D shape. It has been a bit of a challenge remembering the properties of a pentagon, hexagon and an octagon. Throughout the week we have been spotting all of these shapes within our classroom. Here are some of the activities we have been investigating to help us develop this skill.
We hope you have enjoyed our blog update for this week.
Have an amazing weekend.
Mrs Stevenson and Primary 1B
In Numeracy we have been working on decomposition (borrowing). Some of us have found this quite a challenge, but we have stuck with it. This would be a good thing for the children to practise at home when they can!
We continue to work on Subtraction. We have enjoyed using our Heinemann textbooks to challenge ourselves this week. In Number Talks we have looked at how we can use the answer to one sum to help us quickly and easily solve the answer to another. Here is an example below:
In writing this week we have continued to look at Persuasive Writing and created a one-sided argument about why reading is important. We thought about how reading impacts our lives at school, at home and how it will prepare us for the World of Work. We know that it is without a doubt, a very important skill to have!
Here are some of our finished pieces:
In Reading this week we have looked at the role of a Word Wizard. This is where we find a word we are unsure of, we make a guess at its meaning, then we find out what it means and then finally show our understanding of this by using it in a sentence. Here are our words from this week:
‘Trampled’
‘Consumed’
‘Disbelief’
We have been busy filming our Sharing the Learning this week! We have lots of good things to tell you about that P4 do in Literacy and Numeracy. We look forward to you seeing our videos.
Maths-
In Maths we have been doing a little bit of the 4X table and division. We have been doing some recording for ”Share The Learning” for parents so far we have done the comutitive law of multiplcation with cubes.
Literacy-
Going back to the recording in literacy during the recording we asked questions about our reading books Charlottes Web, Tom Gates, Fantastic Funny Frightening books.
Chinese-
Every Monday at 10:00 We do Chinese with real Chinese in China and learn their launguge
Literacy
We read through our reading book and then answered comprehension questions about the text. We were improving our skim and scanning skills when reading to find information.
Darby- “In reading we were answering questions about the book. We had to write our answers in sentences”.
During ELF thus week we were focusing on varying our sentences lengths. We were trying to use connective words to extend our sentences.
Robyn- “In writing we were making our sentences bigger by using works like ‘because’ and ‘and’ “.
During Word Boost we were improving our vocabulary. We are introduced to the meaning of 6 boost words and we then use these to up-level our talking and listening and writing.
Maths
This week we continued to learn about number sequences. We were learning about number sequences where the rule was minus.
Aayan- “We were learning about number sequences that were take away. I used a 100 number square to help me work out the answer”.
We also were introduced to the game SumDog. There is a selection of different games that involve you using your maths skills. This is something we will be using in class to support our numeracy and maths skills.
Health and Wellbeing
This week we enjoyed staying active and healthy during P.E. After warming up, we focused on balances.
Sarah-Louise- “We have been exercising and this makes me feel healthy”.
