Spooky Schiehallion

This week in Schiehallion we’ve been writing Halloween poems. Our aim was to write riddle poems using six clues to describe a Halloween object. The reader would then have to guess what they think the poem is about.

We used our descriptive language skills that we developed last term to help write our clues. I think you’ll agree that the clan did a great job, and that the poems are a very enjoyable read.

Financial Education Sessions

Last week, our P3-7 clans took part in Financial Education Sessions, kindly delivered by Money Advice Scotland.

These sessions looked at Introduction to Money, Budgeting for Events, and Banking and Borrowing.

The children thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and learning about such an important subject.

Maths Week Scotland – Schiehallion

In our learning over the last few weeks, Schiehallion have been investigating and learning about place value – making sure we understand the value of each digit within a number. Specifically this week, we have been looking at multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and even 1000.

We wanted to transfer this learning into some art work – so we created Mondrian art designs using 3 digit numbers as our stimulus. The children used two 3 digit numbers to create a sum, and then used the corresponding dienes blocks to create their pictures.

For example, if our sum came to 675, you would need to use six 100 blocks, seven 10 blocks and 5 single blocks.

I think you’ll agree that they came out really well.

Schiehallion – Descriptive Writing

Over the last couple of weeks in Schiehallion we have been looking at descriptive writing. To begin with, we wrote a ‘cold piece’ to see what we managed to remember from last year. We wrote about Schiehallion, as we wanted to explore our namesake munro.

After we had written our cold pieces, we started to learn about how we should structure our descriptive writing. Alongside this, we worked on the type of language that you would find in this style of writing – focusing on nouns and adjectives.

We learned about different types of nouns – common, proper and collective – and then we identified these in a piece of writing about the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Our next step is to plan and write about our local area. Keep your eyes peeled for descriptive pieces about Calderwood estate coming your way.

Finding our way in Schiehallion

Schiehallion have had an excellent first 2 weeks settling back into Calderwood life after our summer holidays. We have been very welcoming to the new pupils and champions who are now in our clan.

We have really enjoyed playing Getting to Know You games, as well beginning our PE lessons. We have also been learning about measure and forces, making posters, which you can see below.

This week we held our pupil council elections. We discussed what would make a good pupil council representative, and then a number of the students campaigned for election. This included making posters and making a speech to the rest of the clan

Schiehallion and Thistle – Health and Wellbeing Focus

As part of our health and wellbeing focus we have explore a number of different topics:

  • mental health and wellbeing
  • anti-bullying and what is bullying
  • positive body image
  • how to develop and support positive relationships
  • what to do and where to go if uncomfortable feelings get too much to cope with

We have responded to these prompts in our own ways and a selection of these responses are included below.

P6 Cross Country Race

Thistle and Schiehallion clans had a fantastic morning out at the West Calder Cross Country Event at Polbeth United pitches.  They supported each other wonderfully and all children completed the race. To top off a brilliant morning, Calderwood Primary Boys were the winning team, coming first in the overall team event!  The top 4 boys will have the opportunity to take part in a further Cross Country event when they are in Primary 7.  Well done to all!

Schiehallion and Thistle – Ocean Literacy Trip

On Tuesday 26th March 2024 Schiehallion and Thistle Clans had our second visit to Heriot-Watt University – we explored the University as a whole (including lecture theatres!), the National Robotarium and even spent time in the Oriam with an inflatable whale.

During the visit we learned all about Ocean Literacy and what happens when litter enters our waterways. We also had time with Whale experts and learned more about how robots can be used to film and interact with animals in their natural habitat.

Below are a number of pieces of learning inspired by our trip and photos of our trip:

P6 Euroquiz

Our amazing Schiehallion and Thistle Clans took part in the 2024 heats of Euroquiz alongside Primary Schools from across West Lothian on Thursday 21st March 2024. They were phenomenal ambassadors for the school and our top teams managed to achieve scores in the forties out of a total of 60 available points. Two teams came joint first place within our school with a gargantuan score of 43/60 respectively!
Many congratulations to St Joseph’s Primary School for scoring 55/60 and going forward to the Scottish Parliament for the next round. A huge thank you of course also goes to Zoe Gordon for facilitating and organising the Euroquiz and fuelling such an interesting, varied and expansive IDL topic at Calderwood Primary School.

“Hope” Anti-Bullying Production

Calderwood Primary had a visit from “Take Away Theatre” last month, who performed “Hope”, an anti-bullying production, to our P4-7 clans.  P4 and P6 clans also participated in follow-up workshops.  The performance was delivered by professional actors and was thought-provoking and entertaining for the children.  The children were captivated throughout the performance.  The workshops for P4 and P6 clans provided the opportunity for the children to explore the issues raised in the performance in greater depth.  Through Health and Wellbeing lessons, children also completed activities in clan related to the performance.
