Primary 5

This week we have been thinking about the way we approach mental maths problems. We discussed that there are four different ways that we could think of the questions. We wrote number stories and thought of written strategies like number lines to help us. We also drew pictures to represent the problems and used concrete materials like cubes to help us to visualise what we were doing.

Settling in with P2

Primary 2 have been settling into their new class and finding out how to be friends with their class mates through the Rainbow Fish Story.

We have had to get used to being a bit more independent and becoming more organised which is quite a big step for lots of us.

We have started the daily run and we are busy practising yoga in our PE sessions.

We plan to watch some mushrooms grow and plant bulbs for Christmas!

Working with their friends.

Learning is fun Primary 1 !

We’ve been very busy developing skills across the curriculum this week and have enjoyed lots of collaborative learning. Our woodland topic was launched and the children have already brought in lots of stories and information books to extend our learning. Natural treasures such as lichen, fir cones, conkers and autumn leaves from woodland walks have been added to our interest tables.

In our  technology and expressive arts lesson, we created uniquely individual collage owls to add to our woodland display. Tearing, folding and overlapping paper feathers was quite tricky but we persevered. Adding feet and eyes was  fun, as our owls took on their own identity and each one has a different expression! We also used sponge painting to give texture and tone to trees for our owls to perch on.

Our maths challenge this week was great fun. We used ropes to create 2D shapes and had to explain what we knew about the properties of each shape, to convince Mrs Clegg and Mrs Gaspar that we had made a circle, rectangle, triangle and square!

In  RME, we listened to the story of the Good Samaritan. We explored the story through drama, acting out each scene and discussing the attitudes and behaviour of characters in the story.   We  had a very thoughtful discussion about caring for others and how this can be shown in the things we do and say, everyday in our school and home communities.

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy reading our next update !

Digital Learning in Primary 4

We have been looking at digital learning and how we can use it to support and enhance our learning experiences at school and beyond. We can now access the internet independently using different methods to log in, use apps and games to develop and improve our maths skills, type website addresses accurately, search for information in child friendly language, use coding to make something happen and are beginning to recognise and use terms within computing science. Today we also used board games to practise our problem solving and logic skills.

Primary 3’s Very Short Week

This week has been a really short week, but we have still been learning and achieving lots in P3.  Here are some of the things we are proud of:

Alistair – I did my colouring well on the PLP and I’m excited to do another one.  I’m proud of Sumdog because it helps my learning.

Haaris – My writing is a lot better and neater.

Murren – I’ve improved on my drawing – now I do proper hands all together and the eyes are a lot better.

Zoe – I’ve got better at my writing since last year – it’s smaller and neater.

Tara – I think I have been learning to tell the time on analogue and digital clocks really well and I hope we can do it again.

Natasha – I’m a lot better at telling the time now – I used to just guess but now I try to find out the answers.

Jack M – I’m improved at getting my work done faster and doing neater writing.  I did lots of detail in my drawing for my story.  Mrs WS said it was amazing.

Lee – I’ve got a lot more focused and got my work a lot neater.

Lucinda – I’ve improved my times tables in maths.

Anna – We were learning about half past and one hour after and one hour before.

Amelia – We have been learning at Assembly about Genes for Jeans Day.

Reese – There are 2 different types of genes/jeans – there is one for your body and one for you to wear!

Jessica – I’ve been starting to write more pages than I used to.

Here’s to another great week in P3!

Primary 7 Two Stars and One Wish

Although it has been a short week in Primary 7 we have achieved a lot.  Two things we are particularly proud of are:

* In writing this week we have been challenging ourselves to add ambitious words into our imaginative stories.  We also had to make sure we held the readers attention throughout the story.

*In maths we have been using skills we learned whilst doing place value to help us with our addition work.  These skills included estimating and rounding to help us find approximate totals.

Our wish for next week is to find out more about World War 2. Our goal is to find out how Britain was affected by the war.

Problem with uploading photos and documents – fixed

As you are aware some schools, including Bellsquarry have been unable to upload photos and documents to the blog due to a central problem. The problem seems to be have been fixed and we hope to again share photos of your children’s learning.

A guide to using social media and the minutes from our latest Parent Council AGM have been uploaded. Thank you also to Gemma for producing a Fundraisers’ newsletter, which includes a very useful calendar of events for the session.  These can be found by clicking the Parent Council tab above.

Maasai Mara – Osiligi Warriors

On Monday, we were treated to a visit from the Osiligi Maasai Mara warriors. They come from the village of Oleopolos and surrounding communities in Southern Kenya which is about thirty miles south of Nairobi.

The Osiligi warriors performed traditional and exciting Maasai tribal songs and dances as well as their world-famous Maasai jumping.  A few lucky pupils and staff even managed to join in with their jumping and singing! Since 2010, the group has worked in close association with a small UK charity called the Osiligi Charity Project which supports infrastructure improvements back in their local Kenyan community.
