World Book Day – Primary Three Activities

Happy World Book Day, P3 – and happy snow day!

To celebrate, why not combine a bit of them both?  Can you draw the cover of your favourite book – or the cover of the book or magazine you have been reading recently – in the snow?

If that’s too cold for you (or you’ve had enough of the snow for today), what about making a reading den?  Find a cosy corner and a blanket and cuddle up with your book!  How interesting and fun can you make it?  If you fancy some inspiration, have a look at this link:

http://www.scottishbooktrust.com/blog/reading/2015/11/the-whys-and-hows-of-creating-a-reading-den

Ask an adult at home to help you – there are some ideas for them on the website too!

Stay cosy and enjoy your reading!

World Book Day – Primary 6 activities

I know most of you will be out in the snow having fun but when you come in and get out of your wet clothes and have a hot cup of foaming milk or chocolate, remember it’s World Book Day.

Perhaps as you are warming up, you could

  • Practise reading aloud  your chosen passage from your book.  Remember we’ll be reading them in class next week so be sure to work upon your expression;
  • Make a list of places where people are most likely to read;
  • Create a book character from snow;
  • Design a picture/scene from your favourite book in the snow;
  • Create your own reading quiz to share with the class;
  • Create a biography about your favourite author;
  • Turn your favourite story into a comic strip;
  • Re-tell your favourite story in exactly 10 words;
  • Create a new front cover for your favourite book;
  • Check out: http://interactivesites.weebly.com/language-arts.html
  • Go to http://www.worldbookday.com/world-of-stories/ and select a free audio full length story.  Snuggle up and enjoy!
  • Go to http://www.scottishbooktrust.com/video-tags/world-book-day and watch some famous authors live!

Or if all else fails, snuggle up and read for enjoyment……………just like me and Rusty the Teddybear!

Choose to listen to one of the books from above and then design  your own cover for it!

Build a book den!

Read it and make it.

Snowball Truffles

2oz (50 g) Butter or hard margarine
2oz (50g) Cocoa powder
4oz (100g) Icing sugar

Press the ingredients together with the back of a spoon, this takes a while but eventually the mixture comes together and gradually changes colour.
Then add your choice of flavouring.

1tsp vanilla essence (for chocolate flavour)

Roll small amounts of the mixture into small balls and then cover them by rolling in desiccated coconut for snowballs. Hundreds and thousands or vermicelli for something different.

Cover and leave to dry for 24 hours

Happy World Book Day to all Primary Ones at Bellsquarry!

We couldn’t let this day go by without celebrating what we love to do in P1 and that is READ! So here are a couple of things that I thought we could do together on this very snowy day.

First, I would like you to watch this video from the World Book Day site https://www.worldbookday.com/biggest-book-show/ Make sure it is the illustrator’s video as the other one is for older children. It’s really fun. After it’s done, please write a sentence that starts with “My favourite story was ___________ because __________.”  We’ve been doing a lot of sentence writing so it will be easy for you. Then draw a picture of the book with the title, the author and the illustrator. Prepare to show this to the class on Monday.

The second challenge for you is to find your favourite book that you have at home and ask someone to read it with you. Try to read any of the words or sentences that you can to the person reading with you so it is a team effort. Bring that book to school with you and we will try to read all of the books by Friday!

Our author, Rachel McGaw, has been rescheduled for next Thursday afternoon so our reading celebration will continue. Don’t forget that she will have copies of both her books for sale on the day for £5 each and will sign each copy. If you’d like a look at her website it is https://rachelmcgaw.com/.

Stay safe and warm and get reading. I know that’s what I will be doing.

PS  You will also have extra time to prepare your class talk for presentation on Monday.
