Science Week in P1 – Day 1

This week is Science Week, and P1 are learning about space, in particular the sun, moon and stars.

Today we started our science week by thinking about what science is. Lexie knew that science involves experimenting, and lots of us knew that people who do science are called scientists. This week, we are going to be scientists!

We then thought about our science topic of space and brainstormed all the things we already know. Mason knew the names of lots of the planets. We knew that the sun is very hot and we can see it during the day, and that we see the moon and stars at night. James knew that the moon is made of rock (not cheese!) and that the sun is a star. We then worked in pairs to make a picture about space and shared these with the rest of the class.

This afternoon, we learned about the sun, earth and moon. We now know that the sun doesn’t move- it is actually the earth that spins (once per day) and that when we are facing the sun, it is daytime and when we are not facing the sun, it is night time. We also learned that the moon or it’s the earth – that means it goes around earth. We then did some art relating to this topic, which you will be able to see at our open morning on Thursday.

We cant wait to learn more about space!

Transition Day

Today, the Primary 1 boys and girls from Stoneyburn came to our school to further our learning on litter and recycling. We started the day by having some free choice play in the classroom and shared area and got to know each other again. After break, we watched a programme about how bin lorries work and how paper is recycled and turned into newspapers. We then split into 2 groups and created Recycling Superheros to encourage people to recycle their waste. We planned our superheros first, thinking about the colour of their outfit, cape and mask then thought about logos for the front of our their outfits, thinking about what would encourage people to recycle. We thought that the green recycling arrows would be good, or a capital R for Recycle. We had great fun drawing then painting our Superheros and enjoyed getting to know the children from Stoneyburn.

Chinese New Year

On Wednesday, Rongrong came to visit us and told us all about Chinese New Year. We know that Chinese New Year is at a different time of the year to our New Year.

The Chinese Years have a different animal each year. 2018 is the year of the dog.

We made Chinese Lanterns and New Year cards. We did some Chinese writing.

The boys and girls who go to nurture shared their Chinese dragons with us and we danced to some Chinese music.

Assembly

This morning we had our first assembly of the year. We welcomed some new members of staff and children. We sang ‘Welcome Everybody’.

We spoke about children’s rights, in particular, Article no. 19 – “You have the right to be protected from being hurt and mistreated, in body and in mind”. We discussed what this means – being kind, caring and respectful to others and using safe and gentle hands.

We reminded ourselves of our Key People, who can help us if we are feeling upset or need help with something.

We were sharing our learning with the school. Emily and Jacob showed their paintings of the four seasons and explained the differences between the trees. They also joined in with the nursery’s story “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”.

Well done to our certificate winner, Daniel, for being a Successful Learner for his wonderful writing.

Happy new year!

We have had a great first week back in P1! We have been learning some new tricky words (he/she) and have been consolidating our phonics and maths learning from last term. We have been thinking about our new topic ‘Winter’ – we have thought about what we already know and what we would like to learn. We learned the names of the other three seasons and painted trees to show the differences between the seasons.

Jojo Gnome

Last Thursday, we had great fun at our Jojo Gnome workshop with author and illustrator, Jo Hall. We practised our listening skills and even had a smell test! We coloured some Christmas cupcakes then made them dance, and Jo turned them into an animation! You can see this here:
