Road Safety

Last week, we were learning about road safety. We learned the Green Cross Code: stop, look and listen before crossing. We wrapped up warm and practised crossing the road safely. We spoke about being able to see and hear all around, and how sometimes we might need to take our hoods down to cross, even if it is raining! We learned that we should not cross between parked cars because we would not be able to see if cars were coming. We also learned that we should walk across the road in a sensible manner, holding a grown up’s hand if possible.

Halloween in P1

Over the the past week, we have been learning about Halloween. We learned that Halloween is celebrated on 31st October every year and that when it began, people dressed up because they thought there were real ghosts and they were trying to scare them away! We learned that people used to carve turnips, but then started using pumpkins instead because they were much easier to cut into. We learned that carved pumpkins are called Jack-o-lanterns. We spoke about what we were going to dress up as for Halloween and had great fun at the school disco. We learned that trick-or-treating can also be called guising and we discussed how to stay safe when out guising. We made footprint ghosts, handprint spiders and Halloween cards and we all helped Mrs Hendrie carve some pumpkins. We then got to get messy with the insides of the pumpkins! We thought they felt “squishy” “slimy” and “yucky”!

Term 1 in Primary 1

We have made it to the October holidays! What a busy term this has been! We have had lots of fun and have learned so much!

The term started with lots of art for the annual flower show – the theme was ‘gala day’ so we made collage crowns and painted some bunting.

We have enjoyed working with our buddies for lots of different things, and we love having our parents in for our Learning Together sessions.

We have learned so much in literacy: we have learned all of our set 1 sounds: m, c, k, ck, s, p, t, a, i, n and o. We are now practising recognising and writing these sounds, as well as working out which sound we can hear at the beginning of a word. We have enjoyed having a go at emergent writing in our writing jotters.

In maths, we have been learning how to correctly form the numbers 0-10 and have been counting to 10 and 20! We have been learning about shape and measure with Mrs Crowe on Wednesday afternoons.

Our topics this term were All About Me and Autumn. During our All About Me topic, we learned about the importance of having a name, different emotions and our friends. We are mind-way through our Autumn topic and have enjoyed doing lots of arts and crafts as well as learning about different aspects of Autumn, like hedgehogs and scarecrows.

We have taken part in lots of whole school activities, such as voting for our house captains, joining in with the Rookie Rockstars and taking part in the Joe Wicks Workouts!

We can’t wait to see what next term will bring!

Our week in primary 1

What a busy week we have had this week! We have taken part in Joe Wicks School Workouts each day, Rookie Rockstars Monday – Thursday and it has also been maths week! We learned the ‘a’ sound, number 4 and 5, and did some writing about our favourite thing to do.
