Scottish Maths Week -P5/4

As part of Scottish Maths week we have been looking at different types of patterns.

Yesterday we looked at number visuals. We had to work out what number the number visual was. We then discussed what patterns we could see.

” I saw two groups of 4 dots and then doubled it” – Jaxon

“I saw two groups of 5 to make 10 then doubled it to see 20″ – Natalie

We then tried to make our own number visuals using the same patterns we found to help us

 

Today we continued to look at patterns and used Pascal’s triangle.  In groups we talked about what patterns we could see straight away.

 

We then then had to work out what the missing numbers in Pascal’s triangle.

” I think you add the 2 numbers on the end to find each number” – Mackenzie

” The number is found by repeating the pattern – 1, 4, 4, 4, 1″ – Szymon

We worked out together that to find the missing number we have to add the 2 numbers above it.

We can’t wait to continue finding patterns this week  Tomorrow we’re going to use Izak9.

P5/4 first 2 weeks

We have had an excellent start to the new school. We have enjoyed exploring our new classroom and getting to know each other a bit better.

We have been talking about what makes a great friend. We discussed different qualities a friend has and looked at which was most the important. For our class we decided that being honest was the most important quality. We also looked at qualities we all have in the class. We were each given a name of a classmate and in secret had to write what we thought they bought to the class. At the end, we all felt amazing as everyone had written lots of nice things about each other.

Im maths we have started looking at different strategies to add and subtract. We are using numberlines to start with and are moving on to partitioning this week.  Miss Cooke has set us a range of questions through the “chilli challenge” – this means we can all challenge our learning.

In P.E we have have started to learn different skills in Netball. We focused on chest passes and looked at how to use the space to pass the ball. We have P.E on Wednesday and Thursday

We cant wait to learn more as the term progresses.

 

Primary 5

Outdoor sentence building

Today we went outside to continue our work on building sentences.

We choose a variety of words that we think we should be able to spell as well as using a variety of punctuation.

Our challenge was to work in a pair to build a sentence. We had to try and make sentences with the most points. We got 1 point for each word spelt correctly as well as using a full stop, 3 points if we used a question mark or exclamation mark and 5 points if we used one of our chosen words.

We really enjoyed doing this and found that it’s hard to complete sentences with a partner as we don’t always know what they’re thinking.

 

Primary 6

P6 Cross Country

On Thursday 30th March all P6s went to a cross country event to compete with other P6s from the Whitburn Cluster.

First of all we walked around part of the course to warm up as well as to know where we were going. We had to make sure that the tape was on the left side of us at all times.

The P6 girls ran first. The boys cheered them on.

” I was proud of Karis as she was the first Greenrigg girl back” – Callum

” I was proud of Jenna as she kept on going” – Ewan

Once the girls had got their medals, it was the boys turn. There was lots of excitement to get started.

” I was proud of all the boys that they kept on going and Ryan helped someone get back up when they fell” – Leah

” I was proud of Tyler as he kept on going even though it was hard” – Mia S

At the end we found out that Whitdale Primary had won the schools competition for both boys and girls but we’re super glad that we did it.

The Primary 5s can get training now so we can do even better next year.

Primary 6

P6 bridge building

Today P6 from Stoneyburn came to join us for our transition project – bridges.

First we looked at different Scottish bridges. We had to find where they were using a map of Scotland and an atlas. We also looked at the different design features each one had. We discussed why certain shapes are better than others.

“The arches have blocks at the bottom to make them more stable” – Karis

“The Tay bridge has a design similar to a saltire flag – a cross inside a square” – Emma

Next we designed our own bridges  we had to include one design feature we had found and had to span across 2 school chairs, about 6 feet apart. We could use lego or Knex.  We had time to plan before we built.

“We could make it like a staircase but overlapping the bricks” – Erin.

“We had to build together so we could be successful” – Tyler and Arron

We decided that we need more time to complete our bridges to meet the design criteria.  We will continue them next time we meet.

Handball festival

Today we went to a cluster handball festival at Whitburn community centre. We joined Whitdale, Longridge and St Josephs.

We formed 3 teams. We were called Canada A, B and C. Each team played 3 matches. Each match lasted 4 minutes.

We had to make 3 passes before we were allowed to shoot and could only take 3 steps if we had the ball. It was very competitive.

We used our teamwork, attacking and defending skills to try and score in each match.

Canada A won the matches on court 1.

We are hoping to start a handball club in school as we really enjoyed it.

“Right of the Month”

As a school we are working towards Level 2 for Rights respecting Schools. We have decided to introduce a “right” to focus on each month.

Article 12

You have the right to give your opinion, and for your adults to take it seriously

 This article says we have the right to have our say and help make decisions.

In school we watch Newsround and share our opinions and discuss recent news. We make sure we listen to others opinions, take them on board and respect them.

Learning to give our opinions now will help us to be more confident making decisions in the near future.

There are a lot of things in our school that lots of pupils agree and disagree on so we let every pupil say what they think.

Rights Respecting Schools Pupil Voice Group

P5 Castles mini topic

Last week we learnt all about Castles as part of a mini topic.

We learnt when the first Castles were built and features of them. They were called Motte and Bailey. The Motte is a big mound of dirt where the tower would sit.

We researched how we could identify a stone castle. We found out that a keep is another word for tower and a palisade is a wooden fence.  Now it would be a metal fence.

We took part in two stem challenges.

We had to plan, design and make a catapult.  As a class we decided that it had to have unusual features as well as throw an object the furthest. It was very difficult.

We learnt that we worked well in teams as we used good communication skills, shared our ideas and tested them out. We found that we would need to know more about different designs of catapults so that all of our designs were successful.

We had a great week learning about castles and would love to learn more about them.
