Maths week and school values!

As part of maths week, we have thought about how technology helps us in Maths. We were learning about how people have told the time in the past and how we do it nowadays. In the olden times, people used sundials to tell the time. We made our own sundials and we took them out to watch where the shadows fell on the dial. It was quite tricky for some of us to line up our dial with the correct time. The other problem we thought about was how people might have told the time if it was cloudy.
In modern times we can use phones, timers, laptops, tablets, cuckoo clocks, ipods, the sky, watches, the news, analogue and digital clocks, alarm clocks, the speaking clock. We even asked Siri what the time was!
We have also thought about and acted out some of our school values of respect, fairness, trust and passion. The hardest one to think about was passion but we all know that passion is a strong emotion and we know that when we are passionate about something we can show it, so it might be that we love everyone’s individuality, we love Maths or science, artclub, drama, breakfast club, drawing, multisports and we can show our passion about all of these by doing them enthusiastically and sharing our passion about them with others.
Table of the week – the table of the week competition was REALLY close this week with the Friday tables test influencing the winning table massively with just 20 points between first and third. However the winning table this week was………
ORANGE with 390 points!
We were really proud of Artjom for winning out mathemagician award this week and of Elena who was awarded P4as very first certificate for demonstrating school values.

(A note from Mrs Mansfield – thank you to all who were able to make our Meet the Teacher event last night.  I am really looking forward to working together to support your children – they are all superstars!)

P4b

Primary 4b

Week beginning 3.9.18

This week we have been learning about Mary Queen of Scots and her early life.  We made birth announcements to show our learning.

In maths we continued our learning on shape with Mrs Rodger.  We participated in number talks with Mrs Knowles where we explored lots of different strategies and learned from each other.  As the weeks progress we aim to become a lot more confident at sharing our strategies with the class.

In art we were working on shading and we created some wonderful pieces of work.

Don’t forget we are having a “meet the teacher” session on Thursday.

P6b

P6b have had a wonderful week continuing our rainforest and place value learning.

In our literacy we finished off our information texts and they look absolutely amazing! Please feel free to observe our display outside the P6 classrooms on Thursday (meet the teacher) showcasing our amazing learning!

Later in the week we began looking at a newspaper article highlighting the impending climate chaos being caused by deforestation. We are presently planning our own newspaper articles in preparation for writing one next week.

In maths we finished our work on place value and essential calculations. We looked at some challenging 2-digit by 2-digit calculations as well as beginning our next topic; fractions. The children were absolutely enthralled to see the different connections fractions can make. We were able to recognise equivalence between thirds, sixths, ninths and twelfths as well as halves, quarters, sixths, tenths and twelfths.

Throughout the week we have also had a big focus on French. This week we have been recapping some words we learnt previously: days of the week, months of the year and colours.

Last, but by no means least, a huge well done to everyone in class who put themselves forward to the elected position of Student Councillor. This caused huge, but most importantly respectful, excitement in P6b. Every child who put themselves forward prepared a speech and had to take a question from the floor. I was extremely proud of how supportive we all were to each other during what can be a nerve-wrecking experience. Nevertheless, a secret ballet followed our presentations and it gives me great pleasure to announce Ben Templeton as our Student Councillor for 2018/19. Well done!

Congratulations on another super week, P6b!

PS – Meet the teacher is on Thursday night, please come upstairs to the P6 classrooms.

In maths, we have been working on identifying numbers more, less or between, and counting up and down in tens and hundreds. We have continued with identifying 2D shapes.

In topic, we discussed problems in our community and will be looking at how to tackle littering. We also looked at why rules are important and how there are common rules at all places like schools, clubs and hospitals.

Have a great weekend.
