Welcome back and Happy New Year from P3b!

Happy New Year everyone!

We have had an exciting week back. This week we have been focusing on weather and weather instruments. We learned what the different instruments do and how they work. We then made thermometers, barometers and wind vanes. We will be using these in our weather station to record the weather.

In literacy, we wrote thank you letters to Santa or mum and dad.

In Maths, we learned about reading scales and started learning different strategies for subtraction and the language for it. We collated data about our presents and made a bar graph about our favourite types of toys.

In art, we completed our rainstorm picture using watery paint over wax.

This is the last blog for the year!
We have had a fun and action-packed week. We started off revising our grammar and writing proper sentences. We consolidated data handling and reading bar graphs, We wrote a story about an elf, did some mosaic maths and different mindful colouring activities. We looked at the world’s climate zones and what climate is. We used a map to identify where we would find these countries and what the weather would be like. We also looked at the Christmas story and sequenced it. We had our class celebration on Thursday morning. We all enjoyed a film with biscuits and juice and the Champions got to make slime! In the afternoon we had great fun watching the Panto; Dick Whittington. Today we enjoyed the service at church and are finishing the day off with some lighthearted fun and golden time!

Another busy week in P3b!

In French, we were learning the different items of clothing and saying what we were wearing.
In Literacy, we have been learning how to write letters. We have been writing to a very special person! We also learned about Proper Nouns – now we have to remember to use capital letters when we are writing them down.

In Maths, we have continued with learning different strategies for adding, learning about compass points and what temperature is.

In Topic, we have been writing our own weather report and practicing it. Next week we will read out our weather reports.

We also had a Judo Taster session with ‘Destination Judo’ and had lots of activities to do. Mrs. Ghafoor did forget the camera, so sadly there are no pictures.

Enjoy your weekend!

What a busy week we’ve had!

This week was book week, so to celebrate this we started our new class novel; ‘Horrid Henry’s Underpants’. We learned about onomatopoeia and how it is used to add interest to stories, then, we created our own onomatopoeia. We decorated our door based on our class novel and our ‘sounds’. As it was also leading up to enterprise, we linked the two to make our own little book about Enterprise. We designed a front cover, wrote instructions on how to make candles, labeled diagrams and created a fire safety page. Our books are beginning to look really good! We also made comics about the story of Noah and the Great Flood. This was not very easy as a lot of us haven’t seen or read a comic before.

In maths, we have been learning about recognising and using money to help us with Enterprise week. We are really quite good with adding up different amounts of money!

As part of our topic, we learned about hurricanes and tornadoes and learned how to create a tornado using different materials. In art, we used cotton wool and card to make tornadoes and in science, we made tornadoes in a bottle.

The Christmas Fayre is tomorrow from 10am -12pm. Come by and check out the scented candles we made!

Have a great weekend and see you tomorrow!

P3B

In literacy, we were learning how to use commas in a list of things. We found that you could use maths to work out how many commas you need to use! If you have 5 things in a list, you need 3 commas and an ‘and’. If you have 3 things, you need 1 comma and an ‘and’. If you have 4 items in a list you need 2 commas and an ‘and’. Can you work out the maths behind this?!
This week we wrote an acrostic poem and tried to use adjectives to make it more interesting.

In maths, we are continuing to build our mental maths recall, learning strategies for adding and playing games to help us with learning about grid references and co-ordinates.

In French this week we were learning about the names of the clothes we wear. We linked this to our topic and designed and dressed people based on the different seasons. We now have to label the clothes for our giant people.

In topic, we looked at different types of weather and took notes about them. We learned how the weather affects what we do, wear, how we travel and even our mood!

REMEMBER TO WEAR ODD SOCKS ON MONDAY TO RAISE AWARENESS OF ANTI-BULLYING WEEK.

P3b

This was a busy week.

In literacy, we were learning how to use adjectives and adverbs to make interesting sentences. We also wrote about the four seasons, which one was our favourite and why.

In maths, we learned about grid reference and how it shows where to find something on a grid. We now have a floor grid which we can use to play games with. We also have a seating grid reference! We have also begun developing our knowledge on addition.

In topic, we have looked at the seasons, what kind of weather is associated with it and how to dress appropriately for each season.
We also finished off our topic about ‘Our Community’. We talked about town plans and gave constructive criticism to other groups about their town plan. We finally built our town – it looked amazing. We came up with names and then voted for our favourite name. Our town was named ThunderThree Town. TTT for short?!
Here are some pics of our town.

can you spot the different types of buildings in our town?

P3b

Welcome back, everyone! We have had a great, short week back!

In Maths we looked at the language of movement. We became programmers and programmed our ‘Robots’ to go to different places. The weather was good so we were able to go outside and do this.

We designed and made buildings for our town, thinking about the features of buildings, their purpose and where they would be found in a town.

In Health and WellBeing, we were learning about the importance of personal hygiene. We learned how to wash our hands properly and when to wash them.

Have a great weekend!

This has been a quick and exciting week!

In literacy, we have looked at other ways in which sentences can end. We can identify which sentences just use a full stop, which ones are a question and which ones need an exclamation mark. We have also been learning to write letters. This was quite tricky as we had lots of things to think about. We had to think about why we were writing, what we wanted to know and say, the layout of the letter and how to write in paragraphs.

In maths, we have been extending our knowledge of place value by ordering numbers and counting in tens and hundreds. We also looked at lines of symmetry. We used what we learned about this to create symmetrical butterflies in art.

In topic, we learned about the different types of houses that people live in and where we would find them in our Town. We have begun planning our own towns.

This week we also had a chance to participate in Drama which was provided by Firefly Arts. We had lots of fun playing a game called ‘Pressure’, making shapes with letter sounds and singing.

On Monday, we are looking forward to our trip around Bathgate. Please remember to wear something warm, waterproof and comfy shoes which are good for walking in.

(Parents who said they could accompany us on our trip on Monday, can you please come to reception for 1:20pm? Thank you!)

Have a great weekend!

Potatoes!

At the end of last year, P3B (now P4), rescued the potatoes from sports day from going to the bin. Instead, we planted them in bottles in class and watched them grow. We all took our plants home to look after and grow in our gardens during the holidays. (The bottles were too small to grow plants). The challenge was to see who could grow the most potatoes. Lilyrose won the challenge of growing the most potatoes. The attached video shows the plant that I took home and how the potatoes grew from one potato. I only got 4 tiny potatoes but that’s because I planted them out at the beginning of August.

Hi!

P3B

What a busy and exciting week!

In Literacy, we have been learning about the different aspects of VCOP and working with partners. We have been writing sentences – some silly! and writing instructions for what to do if a fire alarm goes off.

This week was maths week. We took part in a competition, played lots of games to help with our learning and built 2D shapes from match-sticks.

In topic, we have been learning about our responsibilities and how to help our community. We went litter picking around the school and collected a large bag of rubbish from each of the playgrounds. The P1- P4 playground was the dirtiest and messiest. Unfortunately, the rubbish was thrown out before we could take a picture to show how much litter there actually was.

In science, we have continued to look at properties of different materials. We measured the strength of a variety of materials. We learned that strength is measured in Newtons.

A big thank you to all the parents who came along to ‘Meet the Teacher’. It was a pleasure meeting you!

P3B

We have had a great week.

In literacy, we have been learning how to make a sentence. we played some games and made silly sentences – that was ok as long as they made sense. We have started using different strategies to learn our spelling, including playing boggle and being a teacher!

In maths, we have been working on identifying numbers more, less or between, and counting up and down in tens and hundreds. We have continued with identifying 2D shapes.

In topic, we discussed problems in our community and will be looking at how to tackle littering. We also looked at why rules are important and how there are common rules at all places like schools, clubs and hospitals.

Have a great weekend.

P3B

This week we have further explored our rights and the rights of the children around the world. We tried to see how it would feel if we had to carry water from the tap to just across the classroom. Most of us found it tricky and some of us found it easy. It was tricky because the water weighed a lot. A lot of children have this responsibility every day – sometimes before school or even not being able to go to school as it takes so long. We also looked at what makes a safe school and we could identify lots of ways that Balbardie is safe. We made posters to send to the prime minister to make sure they keep their promise of having safe schools for all children all around the world.

In maths, we have started to look at recognising numbers and how they form a sequence. We have been practicing the number song and looking at numbers before and after a given number. In topic maths, we have started to look at the properties of 2D shapes and their properties.

In science, we were learning about the different properties material have and compared how they felt, looked and moved in comparison to each other. We recorded our results and were able to talk about the different materials.

In literacy, we looked at how to use The Comprehension Box. The cards were interesting and we could choose which one to do first. We also discussed the messages we could write on our Safe Schools poster and chose the one we liked best, to write.

Enjoy your weekend!

P3B

Welcome back!

P3B have settled in well and have been working hard.

We have been learning about our rights. We have been looking at The Convention on the Rights of the Child. In Article 7 we learned about our right to a name. In Article 28 we learned about our right to an education and understand why we have rules and need to follow them We are using this with our class dojo. As part of our learning, we will be asking our government to ensure all children around the world have access to safe schools. Article 24 has lots of rules within it. We looked at our right to nutritious food, a clean environment, quality healthcare, and access to clean water. We made water filters to see how they cleaned dirty water into clean water and learned how to make it safe for drinking.
In maths we have been building our mental agility by learning and practicing our number bonds.

Enjoy your weekend.

P3b

Our short week was very busy!

In maths, we have been practicing dividing using our knowledge of the times tables. Last week we learned about Carrol Diagrams and this week we have been learning about Venn Diagrams. We can use both to sort out data.

In Literacy, we were learning about and using alliteration. We had to think of adjectives to add to our names to create alliteration. Then we made up some sentences using words beginning with the same letter.

In topic, we have been learning about Fairtrade, food wastage and food miles. We have thought about how this impacts the world around us and have chosen ways in which we can reduce this impact.
Our beans have sprouted and are growing very well. We also rescued the potatoes from the spoon and potato race from going to the bin. We have been learning how to grow them and have planted them. Hopefully, will be able to harvest them in about 15-20 weeks.
You can find out how to grow potatoes in bags here:
how-to-grow-potatoes-in-bags (All potatoes are seeds – you can grow any potato!)

Busy Week in P3b

This week has been very busy. We are working hard at division and trying to use our knowledge of times tables to check/work out our answers. In topic maths, we have continued looking at patterns and its link with geometry.

In topic, we have been learning about harvesting, farms and farm animals. We have also been learning about where things grow and have been learning about the different types of machines that help with harvesting fruits and vegetables.

Tuesday was our shared start and we had lots of activities to do based on Health and Wellbeing. We were revisiting, revising or learning about internet safety, keeping safe around medicines and healthy eating. Thank you to all the parents who were able to come and watch our learning and help us with our tasks. Here are some pictures if you missed coming.

P3b

This week we started with learning about the needs of plants. They need water. sunshine and food. We put our seeds into clear cups to start the germination process. This way we will be able to see when the seed begins to sprout. We will then transplant them into pots.

We had our Celebrating Success assembly and had great fun performing our song. Here are some pictures of us.

Thursday was Outdoor Classroom Day, so we decided to do maths outside. We learned about patterns and then made some in our jotters and in the playground using chalk. The weather was perfect for this!

Have a great weekend!

P3b

This has been a short but exciting week.
As part of our topic, we have been learning about the digestive system. We learned the different parts and their functions. We then recreated the digestive system in class. It was quite gross! Here’s a link to see what we did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aemI64NAK08 Digestive system

In maths, we have been trying to understand word problems. This is quite tricky as we have to know what is being asked before we can solve the problem.

We also had the fundraiser walk this week. We managed to beat our target and got over 700,000 steps! Well done everyone.

P3b

This has been a busy week again.

In literacy, we have been learning about verbs, adjectives, similes and metaphors. We have been trying to use these in our writing to make it more interesting.

In maths, we have been learning about multiplication and working out word problems. We have to read the question and try to work out what is being asked. This is quite tricky so we need to do more to get better.

In topic, we have been learning about our body. We have been learning about the body systems and major organs. We learnt about the heart and tried to find and take our pulse – very tricky! Some of us could not find our pulse – are we alive then? We also learned about the lungs and their function. We did an experiment to find out our vital lung capacity. Most of us have a one and a half litre lung capacity.

Enjoy the long weekend!

P3b

What an exciting week! We had part of Mr. Cunningham’s class join us for the week as he went with the P7’s to Oban. We learned about topic, writing and grammar together and for maths continued with what we were already doing in our class.

This week, we have been very busy learning about the Human Skeleton. Humans have an endoskeleton because it is found in the body. We learned about the names of the different bones, their function, purpose and some facts. We also learned to keep our body strong and healthy, by drinking lots of milk, eating cheese and eating yoghurt because they contain calcium which makes our bones strong. We should also do lots of exercises to keep us fit.

In maths, we have been learning the 3 & 4 times table. In topic maths, we were learning to recognise money and add money. Mr Cunniinghams’ class was learning about telling the time.

In writing, we were writing a story about being shipwrecked. We were trying to use similes and adjectives. to make it more interesting.

Have a great weekend!
