P5b – Did You Know?

As part of our Home Learning, we are creating personal projects on subjects of our choice. We are currently at the research stage, gathering resources such as books and websites.

While examining a variety of non-fiction books we noticed that many of them used ‘Did You Know?’ boxes to catch the reader’s attention and share interesting snippets of information.

Here are a few ‘Did You Know?’ facts that we may use in our projects:

Literacy and English

This week in literacy we have been learning about how to tell fact from opinion. We had a fun lesson where we had a jumble of facts and opinions and we had to sort them into the right categories. We have also been learning about report writing. We will use what we have been doing in our LATC as a focus for this. We have identified the conventions of writing a report and now have to gather information over the next few weeks for our final report on the lifecycle of a plant.

 Numeracy and Maths

In maths we have been focussing on a range of things this week. We are continuing to develop our recall skills using the four operations and always remembering to use the inverse strategy where we can. We have been consolidating our learning of simplifying fractions and finding fractions of a quantity. We had great fun learning about probability and chance. Miss Brown asked us lots of questions that really helped us to understand this concept.

LATC and Science

We have been enjoying learning about our topic, ‘What a Wonderful World.’ Carrying on from last week’s lessons about religious creation stories we have been learning about the scientific theory of the Big Bang.

We have also been learning about lifecycles. this week we each  planted a runner bean. we will give our seeds water and sunlight, we are also experimenting by giving one seed water but no sunlight, one seed sunlight but no water and one seed no water or sunlight. we have made predictions about what we think will happen and we will be recording and changes to the seeds over the coming weeks.

105_2854

Lennox – now that I am learning more I think the big bang theory happened

Lucy M – We did a fun thing to help us understand the big bang. We put glitter into a balloon and then we burst it and the glitter went everywhere.

Jennie – Our group burst our balloon and we measured how far away the glitter spread. Some of the glitter was 10 metres away from where the balloon burst.

Expressive Arts

We have been practising lots for our world record attempt. Parents, carers, guardians, family and friends are all welcome at the Livingston football stadium on Thursday 2nd June to watch as we attempt to set a new world record for the biggest Djembe ensemble. There will be around 900 children from West Lothian schools taking part!

Have a great holiday weekend!!!!

How Did It All Begin? – P5b

This week we were sharing our ideas and opinions on how life on Earth began. We had a fascinating discussion where some people shared their religious beliefs, others shared knowledge they had gained from books and the internet and some used their imaginations as they considered how life on Earth may have begun. It was wonderful to hear everybody’s ideas and we all met our Success Criteria by treating the views and opinions of others with respect.

We’re looking forward to exploring this fascinating topic further!

There was a big bang in space.

Lots of Learning in P5b

This week, in Maths and Numeracy, we have been learning more about fractions. We played a game where we had to find a partner with an equivalent fraction. It was quite tricky but lots of fun. We also put our division skills into practice when we learned to simplify fractions.IMG_0932[1]IMG_0933[1]

In Health and Wellbeing we learned about the importance of having a good breakfast to set you up for the day. Many of us were able to come up with ways to upgrade our breakfasts. Mrs Mackenzie is going to add a piece of fruit to help her with her Aim for 5 target.

In ‘What a Wonderful World’ we examined the lifecycle of a frog. We worked in groups, each member taking responsibility for describing a particular part of the cycle. At the end of the lesson we joined all our groups together to demonstrate how the lifecycle continues.

Full Focus for 5b’s Final Term

We began our new focus for Maths and Numeracy this week – fractions. We can identify fractions of a shape as well as fractions of a group. We understand and can use the terms numerator and denominator.

Our new focus for Health and Wellbeing is Healthy Lifestyles. We created mind maps to share our previous knowledge. We look forward to learning more about this important subject and understand that, at our age, we are becoming more responsible for keeping healthy.

In Reading we will be focusing on non-fiction text, gathering information from a variety of sources to build a project on a subject of personal interest to us. We will also keep a log of all our reading experiences and have opportunities to share them with our classmates.

‘What a Wonderful World’ is the title for our new Context for Learning. This week we discovered some amazing new species: velocipigs, catiphants, smilions and bargontions to name a few. These new species will all enter the Battle of Evolution. Stay posted to find out if they survive or face extinction!

From the Blog Post Box:

My target for this term is…

Our Whole Class target is to focus fully on our learning and make our final term of P5 fantastic!

P5b Enter the Dragons’ Den

This week we completed our class talks where we had to argue the case for the Victorian invention we considered to be the most important. We rounded off this part of our context for learning with a Home Team Challenge. Working as a team, we had to design an invention, advertise our product and present a pitch to the Dragons’ Den.

We came up with some very interesting ideas:

The Marvellous Messis invented 'The Scavenger', a drone-like device which nature lovers can use to obseve wildlife.

The Marvellous Messis were the overall winners of the challenge, gaining the highest score with their excellent team work.

The Brilliant Brains were the winners of the Best Invention, receiving the largest investment from the Dragons for their Baby Care product.

The Demolishing Stars won the award for Best Business Brains by successfully predicting the success level of each invention and making sensible investments.

Wouldn’t it be great if a pupil, 100 years from now, presents a class talk on one of these wonderful inventions?!

What a great week!

We have really stretched our brains in maths this week. We have been going over all the strategies we have learned when using the four operations. We are able to identify what skills we need to transfer to certain maths contexts. We are working hard to use this knowledge to set the success criteria for certain maths learning outcomes. We have also been learning how to calculate the perimeter of a shape.

Ty – if it is a rectangle you can times by two

Sam – there is a length and a breadth in each perimeter

Lennox – if the shape has lots of sides then you can add two sides at a time then add them all together at the end

Our writing has been exhausting this week as well! We asked if we could have sheets of paper that we could write an imaginative story on. Mrs Drummond says she has learned a lot from us doing this. Some of the pupils who don’t enjoy writing are now asking if they can continue their writing at golden time. We have used this piece of writing to develop our self-evaluation skills and we all have a post it note that we have used to bullet point things in our writing that we could improve as our stories continue.

Brooklyn- the post it note really helped me. I enjoyed doing that.

Rowan- we had to pick part of our writing to re-write using the post it note to make changes and I am describing things better now.

New Lanark

On Tuesday we went to New Lanark with P5b. We had an amazing time.

Cole – it was really cool because the man told us that they had the longest river.

Keeping Safe and Healthy in P5b

Internet Safety
This week we started a new project in HWB about internet safety. We watched a video which taught us about online safety and what can happen if we do not use the internet safely.

We learned that….

-we should never give away personal information on the internet to people we do not know.

-if someone asks to meet up with us we should tell an adult.

-we should limit our use of the internet because there are lots of other fun things that we can also do with our time.

-we should never send any pictures of ourselves to anyone who we do not know.

-we should keep our passwords private and only share them with a trusted adult if we think we might forget them.

-we all really enjoy using the internet to play games and for research but it is important that we know the warning signs that tell us when we might be getting into an unsafe situation.

P.E
In outdoor hockey this week we were learning how to tackle. We learned that there are two types of tackles in hockey-the jab tackle and the block tackle. We now know that one of the most important rules to follow when you are tackling is to make sure that your hockey stick does not come into contact with the other person’s hockey stick. This was really tricky!

P5b just want to say….

LAC

This week we started preparing for our trip to New Lanark. We learned about Robert Owen and what he did during his time at the New Lanark Mills. We learned that he was a social reformer who changed the working conditions for people in the mills. He gave children the opportunity to go to school and he reduced the length of the working day. We discussed how to write down information into our own words and we used this skill to create a poster about Robert Owen.

Health and Wellbeing

We did outdoor hockey this week and we were focusing on our passing and shooting skills. We played a mini tournament at the end of the lesson and we were all very competitive!

We continued learning about how to deal with problems in the playground. This week we look at what to do when someone is being excluded. We used drama to act out different scenarios and we discussed if the group had chosen to respond in a weak, cool or aggressive way. We learned that sometimes the manner in which we say things can make a big difference to the outcome of the situation. We realise that if we ask someone nicely and politely if we can join in with a game then they are more likely to say yes, compared to asking them in an angry manner.

Maths

In maths the Pentagons and Squares continued their work on decimals. We were learning how to add and subtract decimals. We used the column method to work out these sums. The Triangles continued their work on division and learned how to divide by 5. We all practiced our times tables and we started to learn the 7 times table. We found out that we already knew some of the 7 times tables as we know that 5 x 7 is the same as 7 x 5 and we know that 7 x 2 is the same as 2 x 7.

OOPS!

We posted a blog last week yet it can’t be found so here is last weeks blog (again) followed by this weeks blog!

P5a

Last week-

Maths has been really tricky this week as we have been learning about the 24hr clock. We say that ‘am’ is after midnight and that ‘pm’ is past morning and it’s really helped us with the 24hr clock!

Lennox – the 24hr clock is different to the clock we normally use because it just shows numbers to twelve.

Jenny – you have to add twelve hours on to the pm time to make it 24hrs.

Yasmin – 8 o’clock in the morning is O800 hrs.

We have also been practicing our mental maths skills. We are getting much quicker adding nine to a number and we are all much faster when adding ten to any number.

Our writing this week has been about writing instructions. We made a Victorian theatre and we had to follow verbal instructions then write our instructions down after we made the theatre. We also used the theatres as a focus for writing a play working in pairs. We will finish our playwriting next week and let you know how it went.

Here are some pictures of our theatres-

This weeks blog!!

P5a BLOG

This week we have been learning about how to write a diary entry. We have been learning about the conventions of writing this way.

Lennox – write short notes.

Rowan- write in the past tense and in chronological order.

Cole – you can use bullet points for things.

Jennie – always have the date.

Maths this week has been building on what we have been learning about time. We have been learning to read journey timetables. We found it quite straight forward when we had to add or takeaway whole hours however it was very tricky when the time differences were more difficult. We had a fun time with rapid fire questions when Mrs D would say a time and then we would have to add or subtract 15mins, 30 mins, 45 mins etc. we all agree this helped us a lot !

We have also been learning how to measure an area in square centimetres. We really got the hang of this very quickly! We know it’ll get harder next week but we are really looking forward to more complicated measure work.

Learning about the lives of Victorian children has been great fun. This week we made peg dolls. They didn’t take long to make but we all had great fun finding different materials to use for clothing and arms etc.

We’re all Going on a Victorian Holiday, P5b

LAC-This week we learned about where the Victorian children went on holiday. We found out that a lot of the Victorians went to the seaside by train and there were so many people at the beach you could barely move!

Literacy-We used the information we learned about the Victorian holidays to write a postcard. We pretended that we were a Victorian child writing to someone about a holiday at the seaside. Part of our success criteria was to include adjectives to describe the holiday. We also used our knowledge to draw a picture on our postcard to show what the seaside would have looked like in the Victorian era.

Maths-This week in maths the whole class learned about decimal numbers. We played an interactive game on the smartboard which helped up practice how to order decimal numbers for the smallest value to the largest value. We also learned about the value of the numbers before the decimal point and the value of the numbers after the decimal point. Some of us made a poster to show our understanding of place value and decimals.

Hope you all enjoy the holiday!

Pupil of the Week-Katie

P5a

Another great week in P5a!

We have been learning how to use a dictionary this week and we now feel much more confident with this. We were also learning about synonyms and for this we used a thesaurus. We noticed that the earlier work we did with the dictionary helped us when it came to using the thesaurus.

In maths this week we have been converting kg into grams and vice versa. Some of us found this a little tricky at the start but we are all feeling very confident with this now. We are also able to determine which unit of measure we would use to weigh different things.

LATC

We made a thumatrope this week. A thumatrope is a toy that Victorian children would have made and played with.

Most exciting of all this week was our Victorian classroom afternoon.

Eva – I liked the desks being single

Cole – you could get the cane if you were slouching and had your elbows on the table

Lucy M – you had to listen very carefully because the teacher wouldn’t keep repeating things

Harvey – I didn’t like having to sit up straight
