Home learning w.c 8.6.20

Good morning girls and boys,

I hope you are all well and staying safe. I am excited to be in school this morning for the first time in what feels like forever. Some of the girls and boys of key workers will be returning to Burnside this week so if you are one of them then i’ll look forward to be seeing you!!

I hope you have been managing ok with the tasks set for you but please remember not to worry if you don’t get everything done. Everyone’s situation is different and I understand that as it gets closer to the summer holidays and the weather is good it can be hard to concentrate on school work. The most important thing is your healthy and happy and everything else we can pick up when we are back together in school again.

Remember both Mrs Mirner and I set tasks for you so be sure to check both posts. As always a good structure for each day might look something like this;

  • 1 numeracy task (i.e. a worksheet, website game, Studyladder)
  • 1 literacy task (i.e. diary, book review, spelling game, Studyladder)
  • Personal reading (roughly 15-20 minutes)
  • Exercise/fresh air (i.e online exercises, playing in the garden)
  • 1 other activity (i.e topic, art, ICT, music, baking)

Literacy:

  • Reading

Please keep reading either using the your own personal reading books, Oxford Owl tab on glow, this free book website that I had share before or any other resource you have.

https://readon.myon.co.uk/library/browse.html

  • Reading comprehension

I’ve attached some reading comprehension tasks related to our Under the Sea topic for each reading group. The answers are included so remember no peeking and you may need an adult to help with you some of it.

Kinneys ‘Our Blue Planet’ reading comp

Dahls ‘Our Blue Planet’ reading comp

Rowlings & Ròs ‘Our Blue Planet’ reading comp

Normally at this time of year we are looking forward to the start of Wimbledon but unfortunately like many events it has been cancelled. However this next task might just give you a wee tennis fix and if you really want to get into the spirit of Wimbledon you could even have strawberries and cream while your doing it!

All groups can attempt the first comprehension task with 1 star but some of you are likely to need an adult to help you not only with the reading but also finding the answers. You should aim to answer each question in sentences.

If you would rather however you could do it as a talking and listening task whereby an adult could read it aloud to you and then you answer the questions, almost like a quiz. You might want to choose a harder one if your doing it that way.

CfE2-T-78-Andy-Murray-Differentiated-Reading-Comprehension-Activity

  • Writing

As we approach the end of term I thought it would be nice for you to take some time this week to write about some of  your favourite memories from P3.  It might be about the Nativity or our class trip to the Science centre or maybe it’s just a simple memory of a game you played one lunchtime or something that made you laugh so much that your side hurt, it can really be anything.

I would love to read these too so as always please feel free to share them by sending me an email.

  • Spelling

We plan to continue with consolidation of the spelling words you have been given so far this week. Please continue to use different active strategies to help you learn and if you can try and come up with as many ‘new’ words as you can for each spelling rule.

  • Grammar

This week we want you to think about adjectives. Remember an adjective is a word that describes a noun (naming word). For example the green grass or the soft feather. I wonder if you think of an adjective for each letter of the alphabet.

    • Access ‘DK 10 minute a day’ app to practise your tables. You will need to download this app from your app store first.
    • Visit easi-maths on your glow page and complete 3 x 20 minute sessions.
    • Go onto Studyladder and complete some of the number activities set. (See Mrs Mirner’s post)
    • Revise ‘learn its’ in tab at top of blog.

  • Addition sums (apologies for the large attachments). Ask an adult or use a calculator to mark.

Although we can’t be together this year, we are looking forward to taking part in an even bigger Sports WEEK.

During the w.c 15th June, we will post some sporting challenges each day on twitter/school app to challenge as many pupils (and staff & parents) to take part as possible!

Of course, we will want to see that you have joined in so during w.c 15th June, please e-mail your photos to gw18burnsidephotos@glow.sch.uk adding ‘Sports Week’ as well as your name and class in the subject box.

Burnside’s Got Talent

Also a reminder that next week between 15th – 19th June we are inviting you to tweet a video/photo of yourself performing a talent to share with our school community on our Twitter page.

There will be more information with regards to this unique version of Burnside’s Got Talent on the app but I certainly be using time this week to perfect that special talent of your so to give it your best shot.

A special certificate on the app/twitter will be made available for those parents/carers to  to download and present to you on behalf of us.

Through the years we have enjoyed amazing performances from musicians, singers, actors, comedians, magicians and gymnasts to name but a few.

Time to get practising and I’m super excited to see all our room 6 girls and boys.

Have a lovely week everyone and as always if you need help with anything then just let me know.

Lots of love

Good Morning Room 6,

Welcome to another week of home learning! I hope you’ve all enjoyed the weekend. Today is “World Oceans Day”.  It happens every year on the 8th June and is all about how we can protect and restore our wonderful and diverse oceans.

Here is the link for the webpage – there are lots of activities and programmes for you to choose from for children of all ages. Have fun exploring this page! Some of them are live and start at 9am so don’t miss them.

Weekly Check in 4/06/20

Good Morning Room 6!

I hope you and your families are all keeping well and enjoying some of the activities from this week. Please say “hello” to us in the comments below – we love hearing from you all – even if its just to say “hi”.

Mrs Graham and I are very proud of all of you and we are really enjoying seeing some of the work you have been doing on the Under the Sea topic.

Have a look at these amazing Power Point presentations made by Ros and Julia. Ros has researched the fascinating sea horse, and Julia has been visiting Holmhills Park, which inspired her to make a presentation about the lifecycle of a tadpole, since we are looking at lifecycles this week. Well done to both of you.

SuperSeahorses

You can access Microsoft Office, which includes Power Point  through your Glow homepage. Its available to all of you as a free download. I am just about to attempt to download it onto the ipad – some of you will be over taking me in your fantastic ICT skills at this rate!

Stay safe and keep smiling Room 6!

Burnside’s Got Talent 2020

Good afternoon room 6

This year, although we cannot share the stage in the hall, we are still planning to hold Burnside’s Got Talent. Usually around this time we start to prepare our auditions for the event of the year. As we will not be able to share our talents on stage this year, we thought we would bring the stage to you!  We know you have lots of skills and talents and we want to see them!  Please have a think about your act and get practising! Remember some of the things people have chosen to do in previous years are sing, dance, gymnastics, football skills, magic trick, tell a joke, play an instrument….or you may think of lots more talents to show off from your home this year.

You can record a video of your talent at home and then you can tweet the photo or video of your performance on Twitter between 15th and 19th June.

Tweet @burnsideprim with you name and room 6 and we will retweet. There will also be a special certificate on the app/Twitter for you to download as a thank you for participating.

We can’t wait to see all of your videos you talented bunch!

Home learning w.c 1.6.20

Good morning girls & boys,

I hope you had a lovely weekend in the sunshine. Can you believe it has been this hot? It has actually felt like we were on our holidays the whole time, its been just lovely! Mani has been out in the garden a lot even if he is still a bit scared of the paddling pool. This is a picture of him finally taking his first steps in, I was a very proud mum!

Lubo has just been trying to find some shade and his favourite place to cool off right now is in Mani’s playhouse, that is until his wee brother chucks him out, lol!

Again this week both Mrs Mirner and I will set tasks on the blog so they’ll be two posts you can access for your work. With your parents you choose what you do but remember a good structure for each day might look something like this;

  • 1 numeracy task (i.e. a worksheet, website game, Studyladder)
  • 1 literacy task (i.e. diary, book review, spelling game, Studyladder)
  • Personal reading (roughly 15-20 minutes)
  • Exercise/fresh air (i.e online exercises, playing in the garden)
  • 1 other activity (i.e topic, art, ICT, music, baking)

Literacy;

  • Reading

Please keep reading either using the your own personal reading books, Oxford Owl tab on glow, this free book website that I had share before or any other resource you have.

https://readon.myon.co.uk/library/browse.html

  • Writing

Why not have a go at writing your own newspaper article about whats been happening to you at home during lockdown. Given the lovely weather we have had you might want to write a bit about the fun you have been having in the sun or maybe something you have achieved during these past 10 weeks that has been important to you, like bike rides, baking or maybe its to do with gaming or a new football trick.

If you would rather you could choose to do a newspaper article on what has been happening in the world right now, a bit like our ‘Newsround’ homework task. I’ve attached a template below as guide to help you set it out but if you would rather just design your own then go for it.

You might even want to do one of each.

T-L-616-My-News-Writing-Template

  • Spelling

It is a consolidation week for both groups so please use a variety of spelling strategies as often as you can to revise the words given to you so far on the above tab. If possible get an adult to test you at the end of the week.

  • Grammar

I have attached a couple of Noun activities below. Remember a Noun is a naming word such as dog or chair or hat.  A proper noun is a special type of noun that always has a capital letter such as the name of a place or a person like Glasgow or Mani. Both count as type of nouns but just always remember to put a capital letter at the start of those proper nouns.

  • Studyladder activities (see Mrs Mirner’s post)

Numeracy:

How did you get on with your shop last week? If you enjoyed it then keep it going although you might want to change what you sell.

Mental maths

  • Access ‘DK 10 minute a day’ app to practise your tables. You will need to download this app from your app store first.
  • Visit easi-maths on your glow page and complete 3 x 20 minute sessions.
  • Go onto Studyladder and complete some of the number activities set. (See Mrs Mirner’s post)

Fractions

All groups had been due to move onto fractions before school closed. While I am not intending on teaching anything new while you are working from home, I have looked at these activities and feel many of you will be able to give it a go by using your prior learning. Fractions basically just means part of something. So if you eat half of a pizza say you are in fact eating a fraction of that pizza. A fraction always has the total number of parts written at the bottom. So one half is written as 1/2 which means 1 part out of a total of 2 parts. Fractions are definitely easier to understand using practical materials or by drawing out shapes to divide up.

You might need an adult to help you with some bits but remember if you are finding it too hard then don’t worry as we will be going over it all again when back in school.

Summer maths

Given how lovely the weather is right now I have attached a lovely summer maths booklet if you would like to download it. It has lots of fun summer maths challenges but if you get too stuck with a particular page and an adult can’t help you then just move on. You can choose what order you do it in also.

Home learning – Under the Sea 1/06/20

Good Morning Room 6,

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend enjoying the sunshine. Maybe some of you have been able to meet up with some friends or family outside.  We stayed up late last night looking up to the sky to see if we could spot the rocket that was launched from the USA, and heading towards the International Space Station. We didn’t see it unfortunately, but Arran and Ena went to bed knowing that there were astronauts flying overhead in a rocket in space, and that in itself was really exciting. Did any of you spot it?

Well done to you all for your super progress on Study Ladder. I can see you are working very hard and I am very proud of all of you.

Thank you to everyone for your enthusiasm for our Under the Sea Topic. As always, please send any photos or PowerPoints to me on gw16mirnererica@glow.sch.uk

This week, we are still thinking about Sea Creatures and looking at Life Cycles. Some sea creatures are mammals, like us. They are known as “marine mammals”.  This means that they give birth to live young, breath air and feed their babies with their own milk. There are around 120 species of marine mammals, including whales, dolphins, porpoises, polar bears, seals and sealions.

However, most sea creatures are what we call “oviparous” – which means they lay eggs rather than giving birth to live young. This week, I’d like you to explore the life cycle of one of these “oviparous” creatures. A sea reptile – the amazing Sea Turtle.

Have a look at the Power point about the fascinating life cycle of a sea turtle.

T-T-5280-Sea-Turtle-Life-Cycle-Powerpoint-V_ver_2 (1)

Complete the worksheet, or draw your own Sea Turtle lifecycle.

sea turtle life cycle

If you want, you can make your own booklet explaining the life cycle of the sea turtle. Use sentences to describe each phase, Remember capital letters and full stops. Try to make your booklet as interesting as possible by using good vocabulary (words) at you might not usually use. make sure you keep the reader interested by starting each sentence in a new way. (not always “the”) The link below has a template booklet

If you want to know more about sea turtles, have a look here:

https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/?s=sea+turtle&post_type=

Have fun exploring lifecycles. Other interesting lifecycles to research include butterflies and frogs.

Keep smiling room 6!

Weekly check in

Good morning Girls & Boys,

I hope you’ve been out enjoying the lovely weather so far this week. I think its to only get hotter so make sure you put on lots of sun cream. Mani & Lubo had their breakfast outside today and it actually felt like we were on our holidays!

As this is your weekly check in please pop on and say hello and let us know what you have been busy doing.

Finally thank you Sebastian for sending in the fab PPT presentation you did on Octopuses as part of our Under the Sea topic. I wanted to share it with you all as I think you’ll really enjoy it.

Home learning w.c 25.5.20

Good morning Girls and Boys,

I hope you are all well and had a lovely long weekend with your families.

I’m sure many of you will have heard the update on  the plan for schools to reopen in August after the summer holidays. The news really did make me smile and while it might be bit different from what we are used to, it will just be great to be back with each other in person again.

As Mrs Mirner said we will be now be posting two posts each Monday with your weekly tasks. Don’t worry you are not getting double the work but it just seemed an easier way for us to manage how we set your jobs while still allowing you to get all of your work at the start of the week. So please make sure to always check both posts.

I have set out some some tasks for the week below but as always please don’t worry if you don’t manage to get everything done.

Remember a good structure for each day might look something like this;

  • 1 numeracy task (i.e. a worksheet, website game, Studyladder)
  • 1 literacy task (i.e. diary, book review, spelling game, Studyladder)
  • Personal reading (roughly 15-20 minutes)
  • Exercise/fresh air (i.e online exercises, playing in the garden)
  • 1 other activity (i.e art, ICT, music, baking)

Literacy:

  • Reading:

Keep reading either using the Oxford Owl tile on Glow, your own personal reading books or this free book website that I had share before.

https://readon.myon.co.uk/library/browse.html

  • Reading/Writing:

I have been loving the Talk for Writing units that Mrs Mirner has been setting for you and it seems from the comments that many of you have been enjoying them too. Here is the last ones for this block (hopefully they upload more soon). Please work your way through at your own pace however you may need help from an adult with some of it.

Ròs, Rowlings and Dahl – a non fiction text about rainbows.

shttps://www.talk4writing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Y2-Rainbows.pdf

Kinneys – a story about a Pirate Princess.

https://www.talk4writing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Y1-Sayeeda.pdf

  • Spelling:

Please see the attached tabs at the top for this weeks spelling words. Try to practise your words every day and if they can get an adult to test you on Friday. Remember to use a variety of active spelling strategies to hep you learn them.

If you are able to print off I’ve attached a word search for each group below too. You might want to even make your own for someone in your family once you’ve completed this one.

Pencils and Rubbers ‘ou’ word search

Pens and Crayons ‘th’ word search

  • Grammar:

Verbs worksheet. Remember Verbs are doing words such as ‘run’ or ‘talk’. They can be followed by ‘ing’ or ‘ed’ but remember that just gives the verb it’s tense. For example ‘running’ is something I’m doing now (present tense) whereas ‘talked’ is something I did before (past tense).  Its been a while since we have done any work on verbs so I’ve attached 3 different worksheet. You can choose what one you do but remember its always good to challenge yourself so don’t be doing one that you find too easy. However at the same time if your finding it too tricky then please choose another one. The answers are attached so no peaking until your finished.

l-53855-ks1-using-verbs-differentiated-activity-sheet_ver_6

  • Studyladder:

Remember there are Literacy tasks set by Mrs Mirner on Studyladder.

Numeracy:

Mental maths

  • Access DK 10 minute a day app to practise your tables
  • Visit easi-maths on your glow page and complete 3x 20 minute sessions.
  • Go onto Studyladder and complete some of the number activities.

3D shape

  • I’ve attached a 3D shape booklet which you could complete outdoors with chalk once you have found the items in your house. If you don’t have a printer you could always just answer the questions on blank paper or in your jotter.

All groups – Outdoor 3D shape booklet

Money

  • A few of you have mentioned in your comments on the blog that you have set up a pretend shop in your house. This is a great fun way to explore and learn about money so why not have a go at creating your favourite shop and use some real coins you have at home to pay for things/give change. You could even price your items and if your playing on your own and then just pretend to have customers. You could raid your tin cupboard and have a mini supermarket or what about a toy shop or even pretend to sell your clothes. You could make signs and a till as well as getting bags to put the customers items in. You might even want to do it outside if the weather is nice. If you have any photos of you working in your shop then please send them into the following email address.

gw18burnsidephotos@glow.sch.uk

If you need any help with anything this week then just as always just let us know.

Stay safe and keep on working hard girls and boys – we are all very proud of you.

Lots of love

Mrs Graham xx

Home learning (Under the Sea) 25/05/20

Good Morning Room 6,

From now until the end of term you’ll receive 2 weekly task posts at the beginning of the week. I’m going to keep Study Ladder updated and provide Under the Sea activities. Mrs Graham will provide additional literacy, maths and fun activities.

Well done to all of you for such a fantastic effort with your tasks last week. As you know, I asked you to research a sea creature of your choice and create a fact file or PowerPoint about it. Jack H sent me his brilliant Power Point all about coral. I was so impressed with the professional lay out and the super content! Have a look at it: The amazing world of Coral

As always if any of you have photos to share with me I’d love to see them. Email me at gw16mirnererica@glow.sch.uk

This week, I’d like you to keep thinking about the different creatures we can find in the sea. I have included some fact cards to read and questions about them. You don’t have to print them off if a printer isn’t available – just write the answers on a piece of paper or answer them orally to your sibling or grown up.

Sea Creatures Fact Cards                Sea Creatures Questions and Answers

In our house we have been busy with the Let’s Go Live Oceans week “makes”. If you are looking for under the sea science based craft activities then you’ll find loads there.  They are great fun and can usually be made with things you’ll have in your house. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=maddie+moate+let%27s+go+live

I have updated your Study Ladder as usual and  recommend one session of about 30 minutes each day. I continue to be extremely impressed with your efforts Room 6. Keep it up and keep smiling,

Mrs Mirner : )
