Home learning – Under the Sea 1/06/20

Good Morning Room 6,

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend enjoying the sunshine. Maybe some of you have been able to meet up with some friends or family outside.  We stayed up late last night looking up to the sky to see if we could spot the rocket that was launched from the USA, and heading towards the International Space Station. We didn’t see it unfortunately, but Arran and Ena went to bed knowing that there were astronauts flying overhead in a rocket in space, and that in itself was really exciting. Did any of you spot it?

Well done to you all for your super progress on Study Ladder. I can see you are working very hard and I am very proud of all of you.

Thank you to everyone for your enthusiasm for our Under the Sea Topic. As always, please send any photos or PowerPoints to me on gw16mirnererica@glow.sch.uk

This week, we are still thinking about Sea Creatures and looking at Life Cycles. Some sea creatures are mammals, like us. They are known as “marine mammals”.  This means that they give birth to live young, breath air and feed their babies with their own milk. There are around 120 species of marine mammals, including whales, dolphins, porpoises, polar bears, seals and sealions.

However, most sea creatures are what we call “oviparous” – which means they lay eggs rather than giving birth to live young. This week, I’d like you to explore the life cycle of one of these “oviparous” creatures. A sea reptile – the amazing Sea Turtle.

Have a look at the Power point about the fascinating life cycle of a sea turtle.

T-T-5280-Sea-Turtle-Life-Cycle-Powerpoint-V_ver_2 (1)

Complete the worksheet, or draw your own Sea Turtle lifecycle.

sea turtle life cycle

If you want, you can make your own booklet explaining the life cycle of the sea turtle. Use sentences to describe each phase, Remember capital letters and full stops. Try to make your booklet as interesting as possible by using good vocabulary (words) at you might not usually use. make sure you keep the reader interested by starting each sentence in a new way. (not always “the”) The link below has a template booklet

If you want to know more about sea turtles, have a look here:

https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/?s=sea+turtle&post_type=

Have fun exploring lifecycles. Other interesting lifecycles to research include butterflies and frogs.

Keep smiling room 6!

Home learning w.c 25.5.20

Good morning Girls and Boys,

I hope you are all well and had a lovely long weekend with your families.

I’m sure many of you will have heard the update on  the plan for schools to reopen in August after the summer holidays. The news really did make me smile and while it might be bit different from what we are used to, it will just be great to be back with each other in person again.

As Mrs Mirner said we will be now be posting two posts each Monday with your weekly tasks. Don’t worry you are not getting double the work but it just seemed an easier way for us to manage how we set your jobs while still allowing you to get all of your work at the start of the week. So please make sure to always check both posts.

I have set out some some tasks for the week below but as always please don’t worry if you don’t manage to get everything done.

Remember a good structure for each day might look something like this;

  • 1 numeracy task (i.e. a worksheet, website game, Studyladder)
  • 1 literacy task (i.e. diary, book review, spelling game, Studyladder)
  • Personal reading (roughly 15-20 minutes)
  • Exercise/fresh air (i.e online exercises, playing in the garden)
  • 1 other activity (i.e art, ICT, music, baking)

Literacy:

  • Reading:

Keep reading either using the Oxford Owl tile on Glow, your own personal reading books or this free book website that I had share before.

https://readon.myon.co.uk/library/browse.html

  • Reading/Writing:

I have been loving the Talk for Writing units that Mrs Mirner has been setting for you and it seems from the comments that many of you have been enjoying them too. Here is the last ones for this block (hopefully they upload more soon). Please work your way through at your own pace however you may need help from an adult with some of it.

Ròs, Rowlings and Dahl – a non fiction text about rainbows.

shttps://www.talk4writing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Y2-Rainbows.pdf

Kinneys – a story about a Pirate Princess.

https://www.talk4writing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Y1-Sayeeda.pdf

  • Spelling:

Please see the attached tabs at the top for this weeks spelling words. Try to practise your words every day and if they can get an adult to test you on Friday. Remember to use a variety of active spelling strategies to hep you learn them.

If you are able to print off I’ve attached a word search for each group below too. You might want to even make your own for someone in your family once you’ve completed this one.

Pencils and Rubbers ‘ou’ word search

Pens and Crayons ‘th’ word search

  • Grammar:

Verbs worksheet. Remember Verbs are doing words such as ‘run’ or ‘talk’. They can be followed by ‘ing’ or ‘ed’ but remember that just gives the verb it’s tense. For example ‘running’ is something I’m doing now (present tense) whereas ‘talked’ is something I did before (past tense).  Its been a while since we have done any work on verbs so I’ve attached 3 different worksheet. You can choose what one you do but remember its always good to challenge yourself so don’t be doing one that you find too easy. However at the same time if your finding it too tricky then please choose another one. The answers are attached so no peaking until your finished.

  • Studyladder:

Remember there are Literacy tasks set by Mrs Mirner on Studyladder.

Numeracy:

Mental maths

  • Access DK 10 minute a day app to practise your tables
  • Visit easi-maths on your glow page and complete 3x 20 minute sessions.
  • Go onto Studyladder and complete some of the number activities.

3D shape

  • I’ve attached a 3D shape booklet which you could complete outdoors with chalk once you have found the items in your house. If you don’t have a printer you could always just answer the questions on blank paper or in your jotter.

All groups – Outdoor 3D shape booklet

Money

  • A few of you have mentioned in your comments on the blog that you have set up a pretend shop in your house. This is a great fun way to explore and learn about money so why not have a go at creating your favourite shop and use some real coins you have at home to pay for things/give change. You could even price your items and if your playing on your own and then just pretend to have customers. You could raid your tin cupboard and have a mini supermarket or what about a toy shop or even pretend to sell your clothes. You could make signs and a till as well as getting bags to put the customers items in. You might even want to do it outside if the weather is nice. If you have any photos of you working in your shop then please send them into the following email address.

gw18burnsidephotos@glow.sch.uk

If you need any help with anything this week then just as always just let us know.

Stay safe and keep on working hard girls and boys – we are all very proud of you.

Lots of love

Mrs Graham xx

Home learning (Under the Sea) 25/05/20

Good Morning Room 6,

From now until the end of term you’ll receive 2 weekly task posts at the beginning of the week. I’m going to keep Study Ladder updated and provide Under the Sea activities. Mrs Graham will provide additional literacy, maths and fun activities.

Well done to all of you for such a fantastic effort with your tasks last week. As you know, I asked you to research a sea creature of your choice and create a fact file or PowerPoint about it. Jack H sent me his brilliant Power Point all about coral. I was so impressed with the professional lay out and the super content! Have a look at it: The amazing world of Coral

As always if any of you have photos to share with me I’d love to see them. Email me at gw16mirnererica@glow.sch.uk

This week, I’d like you to keep thinking about the different creatures we can find in the sea. I have included some fact cards to read and questions about them. You don’t have to print them off if a printer isn’t available – just write the answers on a piece of paper or answer them orally to your sibling or grown up.

Sea Creatures Fact Cards                Sea Creatures Questions and Answers

In our house we have been busy with the Let’s Go Live Oceans week “makes”. If you are looking for under the sea science based craft activities then you’ll find loads there.  They are great fun and can usually be made with things you’ll have in your house. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=maddie+moate+let%27s+go+live

I have updated your Study Ladder as usual and  recommend one session of about 30 minutes each day. I continue to be extremely impressed with your efforts Room 6. Keep it up and keep smiling,

Mrs Mirner : )

Weekly check in

Hello Girls & Boys,

I hope you are all well and finally today and tomorrow it looks like we will have some sunshine ☀️ so make sure you are out enjoying it!

I promised some of you a story about an incident involving Lubo this past weekend so here it is…

On Saturday he was out with his daddy on an early morning walk up a hill. All was going well and Lubo was loving life running up and down as well as taking in all the lovely smells. They were almost at the top of this very big hill when they passed a field of sheep. Now as you know Lubo is a bit cheeky but he’s been on lots of walks like this before, passed lots of sheep and other farm animals and never bothered. But there was something about Saturday that was different, he had a very cheeky glint in his eye. Just as they were passing the sheep, he stopped and stared and then moved a bit closer. His daddy thought about putting him back on his lead but then thought “no he’ll be fine, he’s seen lots of sheep and never done anything” and called him back. Lubo didn’t answer. Lubo moved a bit closer again and again didn’t answer when called. Before his daddy could even think of getting his lead back on him he was off. Off like a shot! He went into full flight, chasing the 6 sheep and 1 ram all the way down the hill. Lubo is quick but who knew sheep were quicker? They managed to stay about a meter ahead of Lubo the whole time and just ran and ran. They were obviously scared of him 😢 The sheep ran towards the farm house which by this time his daddy could see two giant bulls close by. Robert was calling on him at the top of his voice but he just wouldn’t come back. He too then had to run down the side of this huge hill to try and get him back, falling as he went, but Lubo was gone.

10 minutes passed and he couldn’t find him anywhere. As you can imagine Robert was getting really worried that something had happened to Lubo especially because he had seen the bulls. He was just about to phone me to break the terrible news when he saw this tiny grey speck appear at the very bottom of the hill. He kept shouting “Lubo” and the speck started to get a bit bigger until such times as he was standing right in front of his daddy covered in sheep poo and twigs 💩 😂 While Robert was very cross with him and put him straight on the lead, he did feel the biggest relief ever that he came back. He didn’t speak to him the rest of the way home but his real punishment came in the form of the longest bath ever (which he hates) to get all the poo and twigs off him! I think he might think twice about doing that again!

What a drama eh? Have your pets ever done anything as naughty?

Lubo was very cheeky and guess we now know that he can’t ever be full trusted to walk off the lead even up a huge hill with no one else a round! He is not an aggressive dog at all so I know he wouldn’t have hurt the sheep but I think he just thought it was a game of chase or maybe he was auditioning for the role of a sheep dog? Who knows! All we know is we were very lucky something worse didn’t happen and thankfully all the sheep were fine too!

Here is a picture of the bold boy before the drama unfolded

Anyway less about Lubo, he’ll be thinking he’s famous! Mrs McGarvey had put a message on the app which I imagine a lot of you and your parents would have seen. It asked that you share an act of kindness that you have done . It might be helping a younger brother or sister with their school work or tidying your room or even just saying something kind to another person. If you can think of something then please share what it was when you are popping on to say hello.

As always if you have any pictures of you undertaking home learning or of your act of kindness, and you would like to share them then please send them to the following email address;

gw18burnsidephotos@glow.sch.uk

As this weekend is a holiday weekend (Friday & Monday) please if you can say hello either today or tomorrow.

Take care and enjoy the ☀️

Lots of love

Mrs Graham xx

Home learning 18/05/20

Good Morning Room 6,

Welcome back to another week of home learning! I’m so proud of you all for the level of engagement over the last few weeks Room 6. I have to admit boys and girls that my favourite topics are Ancient Egypt  and Under the Sea!  There is so much to discover. I have to give a shout out to Sophia who appeared on Lets Go Live with her knitted sea creatures. What a claim to fame Sophia! Could you please share a photo with us? Please share any photos with me of the “makes” you have so cleverly made boys and girls, Mrs Graham and I would love to see them. Below is a photo of Ena’s diorama. She said she wanted to make a bedroom for a mermaid. She did it all by herself and wanted to share it with you.

My wee girl Ena, (5) made this ocean diorama, inspired by Maddie & Greg o Go Live. She said it’s a mermaid’s bedroom 🧜🏻‍♀️

Mrs Graham has been very busy writing reports for you all as you know and from next week we are going to be sharing the Monday blog again. I’ll keep Studyladder  and Easi-maths updated and give you “Under the Sea” activities, and Mrs graham will plan some literacy, numeracy and fun activities. We will both be here for you to leave comments.

Enjoy your week Room 6,

Mrs Mirner : )

Literacy

Another lovely resource from Talk  4 Writing. Work through this at your own pace

Numeracy

  • Access DK 10 minute a day app to practise your tables
  • Visit easi-maths on your glow page and complete 3x 20 minute sessions.
  • Go onto Studyladder and complete some of the number activities.

Under the Sea

This week I’d like to focus on some of the wonderful creatures we can find in our oceans.  One of my favourites is the sea turtle.  The National geographic kids website is a great source for facts, information and activities. This week I’d like you to explore the website, go on a sea creature fact finding mission! Below is the direct link to the Sea Turtle page, but down the right, you will find lots of other sea creatures to discover.

https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/animals/sea-life/turtle-facts/

Choose a sea creature that interests you and create a fact-file about it. You could do this on paper or using power-point. Include information about where it lives (which zone, where in the world) What does it eat, how does it survive  and what does it look like? Feel free to use other websites or any books you have.

I’ m sure many of you already know that this week Maddie and Gregg are doing programmes about the Science Behind Magic. We are quite excited to watch and  do some of the makes they come up with this week.  Arran and Ena still have lots of Under the Sea makes to complete from last weeks shows too.

ICT

I imagine many of you will be spending more time using a computer keyboard. the BBC dance mat typing programme is really good for improving your typing skills.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zf2f9j6/articles/

For Fun

Ikea have some cool den building ideas! (Sorry grown ups 😬 !!) Our house is covered in dens and caves and various places for teddies and dollies to live and have leisure time. Its fun, but make sure you ask a grown up before you do it!

Don’t forget that BBC bitesize are doing online lessons if you are looking for something to keep you busy indoors.

Don’t forget to stay in touch with us and share photos of your learning!

Hello 👋

Good morning girls and boys?

I just wanted to pop on to say hello and see how you all are? I hope you’ve been well and still being kept busy with the home learning tasks being set for you.

Mani and Lubo have been keeping me busy along with writing all your reports. It has actually been really lovely because let’s face it, you are all pretty great in room 6 aren’t you?

If you can pop on to say hello either today or tomorrow to this post or Mrs Mirner’s check in yesterday then that would be great!

Have a lovely day and speak soon.

Mrs Graham x

PS this was Mani making the most of some wood in the garden. He was very upset when his daddy had to actually use it 😢  Least we know what he’ll be asking Santa for this year ! Lol x

Maddie Moate & Check in

Hi Room 6,

Who is watching Maddie Moate every day for her Oceans Week shows? It’s absolutely brilliant! They also give great ideas for Ocean themed crafts. Have any of you made some of the things she suggests? Please share photos of your crafts below. Or email them to me. We plan to make the sharks mouths and the Diorama. If you haven’t already watched you can catch up on YouTube. Please use this as our weekly check in station too.

Hope you’re all safe, well and enjoying some of the activities.

Mrs Mirner 🐠

Home learning 11/05/20

Good Morning everybody,

I hope you all managed to make the most of the lovely weather we’ve been getting. It was our dog, Lottie’s 3rd birthday on Saturday and so we went on a big walk with her to celebrate. Lottie loves lockdown because her humans are always around to play with her and give her loads of cuddles. We are trying to look at the positives of lockdown in our house. Its not always easy  and sometimes I know its hard to be enthusiastic when we miss our friends and family so much. I find that getting up and moving can really help me to feel positive and so the first activity I’ve set for you this week is an active one, involving all the family.  Make up a workout, using the letters of your name. Have some fun and pretend  to be Jo Wicks –  get the whole family involved.  Look at the video link below to find which exercise goes with each letter of your name.

Studyladder & Easi-maths

I am absolutely delighted that so many of you have accessed these programmes. Did you know that you can change the appearance of your avatar, as well as buy things for your studyladder room using coins that you earn for completing tasks? I have added more activities for you to complete. Try to do a little every day on study ladder and at least 3 20 minute sessions per week on easi-maths.

Literacy

As always, look at the tabs for new spelling words. Pencils & Rubbers: this is a revision week for you, so practise the words already there. Use the active spelling strategies for 15 minutes each day and then have someone test you on Friday to assess your progress.

Talk for Writing have produced excellent home learning resources. This week I’d like you to work through the following:

 Maths

  • Use the DK 10 minutes a day app to practise the times tables of your choice.
  • Here are some ideas for practical maths activities. Rather than visiting a shop with an adult, why not set up a shop in your house with household items. You are the shop keeper, so you are in charge of giving items prices and calculate the change given. cfe-n-322-first-level-amazing-maths-day-cfe-homework-grid_ver_1(1)

Under the Sea

How did you get on discovering the different Oceanic Zones? Arran really enjoyed making an Ocean in a jar. This week our topic learning is to tune into Maddie Moate’s youtube channel every day at 11am. She’s doing a whole week of programmes about oceans!  It’s been reccommended by Nuria and her grown-ups – thank you!! I’m sure we will all learn lots. Maddie Moate is a new discovery for me and her programmes look really good.

Don’t forget to email  me with any photos of your learning at gw16mirnererica@glow.sch.uk

Take care and stay safe everybody,

Mrs Mirner : )
