Hello summer

Good morning girls and boys,

We’ve made it to the final day of term, yay! The summer holidays are almost here and for the next 6 weeks you get to chill and not think about home schooling or blogs but just concentrate on having fun!

As I said at the start of the week Mrs Mirner and I are so proud of you all and how hard you have worked. We have loved seeing all of your lovely pictures and the busy work you have been doing, so well done all of you. I feel like the luckiest teacher in the world to be having you again next year so we can continue our adventures together and have lots more fun.

There is a wee gift waiting for you in room 8 for when you start back. I guess this year it’s not so much a goodbye from P3 but a welcome to P4 gift!

Until then girls and boys have the best summer holiday and I hope you and your families keep staying safe and well.

Final week 22.6.20

Hello girls and boys,

I can’t believe we’ve made it to the final week of term, can you? Normally in school we would be enjoying lots of fun summer activities together as well as you guys helping me to tidy and take down work from the walls. All of which is normally in exchange for the ball of blue-tac you collected, lol! Instead you guys have a week of fun summer activities to do and I’ve got to gather all the blue tac on my own, help!

You guys have been truly amazing this term and Mrs Mirner and I are so proud of you all. The last few months have not been easy and its been difficult for us all at times. We will remember these days forever so please know just how brilliant you have been throughout.

While this is our final week together as P3 I imagine most of you over the weekend will have received your report card along with a letter letting you know what class you will be in next year. Therefore I can let you know how excited I am to be continuing as your teacher in P4 along with Mrs McNeil, yay!!  I feel very lucky to have you again as your are all so wonderful and its great that we can continue from where we left off in March, albeit in room 8.

Things will be different for a bit and in your letter it will let you know what days you are in to begin with, either Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday. We really are hoping this won’t last too long, but initially half of you will have me at the start of the week and the other half Mrs McNeil. We are however all part of one class and together we will make it work so it feels that way until such times as we are able to all be together at the one time. We also have two new pupils starting, a girl and a boy. I’m sure you will make them feel very welcome.

So until then I have a few summer activities that I thought you might want to give a go this week;

Caterpillar watch

Hello room 6!

Look at how big our caterpillar friends have gotten over the last week. They are now 3cm long and very active. They wriggle and move around their tub, eating and growing constantly! As you can see there is silk thread all over the tub too. This is what the caterpillars will wrap around themselves to make a cocoon. They produce this themselves. I will take a photo as soon as they have done this. I think it will be quite soon  now.

Lottie is very interested in them. Dogs have a much stronger sense of smell than us humans and she can smell them! We can’t smell a thing from them! Quite often she’s on her hind legs trying to see what these strange creatures are in the tub and we have had to put them up high so that she can’t get them.

This is officially the last week of school, and so I won’t upload any more Studyladder.

We have learned lots about In our Under the sea topic.

  • We began by naming the 5 oceans of the world  and placing them on a world map.
  • We looked at the different oceanic zones, and were able to describe the characteristics of each zone as well as their names.
  • We learned about what creatures live in each zone and why.
  • We had opportunities to make various sea themed crafts when we watched Let’s go Live.
  • We created PowerPoint presentations/ leaflets about a sea creature of our choice.
  • We learned about life-cycles of various creatures both on land and in the sea.
  • We investigated food chains and created our own.  Wow Room 6 you are all officially experts in all things Ocean related! I’m very proud of you all for taking part in so many of these activities. I hope you all have a fabulous holiday and am looking forward to seeing you back in school in August! Mrs Mirner 🐠🐠

Resources – Stopwatch

Aim – to complete the HIIT workout in the fastest time (each family can decide on a number they think they can challenge themselves with).

10-20 sit ups

10-20 press ups

10-20 jumping jacks

10-20 squats

The person who completes this quickest is the winner

Points : 1st – 3 points                  2nd – 2 points                     3rd – 1 point

Chest push

Resources – something to measure a distance (e.g. tape measure), ball (football/basketball)

Aim – to throw the ball the furthest distance

Holding the ball in two hands at your chest, take two attempts at throwing the ball. Someone should record where the ball touches the floor. Record the best score for each player.

Points: 1st – 3 points                    2nd – 2 points                    3rd – 1 point

Wednesday Challenge

Good morning girls and boys,

Here is your Wednesday Sporting Challenge;

Sack Race

Resources – Pillow cases, bin bags or plastic bags to use as a sack. Something to mark the start and finish.

Aim – Complete the sack track in the fastest time.

Set up a start and finish post. You could do a double run to make it longer.

Option 1 – All players race at the same time

Option 2 – Each player completed the course in against the clock. Quickest time is the winner

Points: 1st – 3 points          2nd – 2 points          3rd – 1 point

Dribbling

Resources – Stopwatch, a small number of objects to act as markers e.g. tins and a decent sized ball (e.g. football, basketball)

Aim – Dribble the ball around the markers

Set the tins out in a straight line with some space in between. Each player should dribble the ball around the tins again the clock. Fastest player wins.

Challenge – At the end of your dribbling course you could try to score a goal. Fastest time wins. Bonus point if you score a goal.

Points: 1st – 3 points        2nd – 2 points           3rd – 1 point

+ bonus point if you score a goal.

Tuesday Sports Challenge

  • Long Jump

Resources – tape measure (if possible), something to mark the starting line and name tags to mark the final jump position.

Aim – Who can jump the furthest?

You can choose whether it is a standing jump or a running run depending on your available space.

Each player completes 2 jumps with the best score being taken forward.

The person who jumps the furthest is the winner

Points –                    1st – 3 points    2nd – 2 points     3rd – 1 point

  • Shuttle run

Resources – stop watch, two items to mark two distances

Aim – Complete the most shuttle runs in 3 minutes

Marking two distances in a straight line (e.g. 5-10m apart) in an open space, when the timer begins run in a straight line from the first marker to the second marker and run straight back down again.

1 point is awarded for one COMPLETE shuttle run lap i.e. from the starting point, to the top marker and back again (one full lap) = 1 point.

Points –                    1st – 3 points    2nd – 2 points     3rd – 1 point

Home learning w.c 15.6.20

Good morning girls and boys,

I hope you are all well and had a lovely weekend. Yesterday was lovely wasn’t it? I’m missing you all very much and can’t quite believe this is our last full week of school before the summer holidays!

This week is going to be a very busy week for us at Burnside with both Sports Week and Burnside’s Got Talent taking place.

Sports Week

 

SPORTS WEEK

 

Although we can’t be together this year for our annual Sports Day event, we are looking forward to taking part in an even bigger Sports WEEK.

This week, we will be posting a different sports day activity each day both on here and on twitter/school app and we are challenging as many pupils (and staff & parents) to take part as possible! Of course, we will want to see that you have joined in so during w/c 15th June, please e-mail your photos to gw18burnsidephotos@glow.sch.uk adding ‘Sports Week’ as well as your child’s name and class in the subject box.

I might try and get Mani and Lubo involved too, although I’m not sure if they are very good at listening to instructions yet.

Monday’s activities:

All family members can take part:

  1. Egg and spoon race

 

Resources – spoon, hard boiled eggs for each player or a small ball for each player, stop watch.

Aim – run from a starting point to the finishing point with the ‘egg’ on the spoon.

 

Mark out an area for the race. You can do a double journey to make it longer.

Option 1 – All players run at the same time.

Option 2 – Each player runs separately against the clock. Shortest time wins

You choose – If you drop the egg should you return to the start or keep going.

 

Points –                    1st – 3 points    2nd – 2 points     3rd – 1 point

 

  1. Sock Toss

Resources – 5 pairs of socks and a bucket

 

Aim – throw the socks in the bucket from a short distance

 

Points – 1 point for each pair of socks that land in the bucket

Burnside’s Got Talent

Do you have a talent you would love to share with us?

It’s finally here, the event of the year, Burnside’s Got Talent! We are asking your parents/carers to tweet videos/photos  of you performing your special talent to @burnsideprim. Mrs McGarvey will then retweet these so everyone can see them. No need to email videos or photos. There is a certificate on the app for parents to download and present to you on our behalf.

Mrs Mirner and I can’t wait to see the room 6 gang showing off their talents and sporting skills so please if you can get involved.

As we are getting closer to the summer holidays and so much further from the last time we were with each other in school, I can imagine it is getting harder to concentrate on school work. That is OK and it’s only normal to feel that way for both you guys and your parents. As always just do what you can this week and as always the most important thing is you are all happy and healthy.

Under the Sea 15.06.20

Good morning Room 6!

I got a lovely surprise in the post on Friday! What feels like ages ago now, I ordered some baby caterpillars online for us to observe and they finally arrived on Friday. There must’ve been a hold up due to everything being on lockdown, but finally they have arrived! I ordered them so that we could observe the life-cycle of a butterfly since we have been thinking about life-cycles in our topic. They have already doubled in size since Friday as they are very busy munching on the caterpillar food in their container. I will keep you updated with weekly photos. They aren’t likely to turn into butterflies until during the summer holidays, but I will keep posting here. We have 5 in total. Can anyone think of some names for them? They measure about 1cm today. I wonder what they will measure this time next week?

This week in our Under the Sea topic, Im asking you to think about food chains.Watch this short clip explaining what a food chain is:

Now lets think about food chains in the ocean. What do you think will be at the bottom of the food chain?  ie, what is eaten by ocean creatures but doesn’t eat anything? (Have a guess!) What kind of creatures do you think are at the top of the food chain in the ocean?

Have a look at this PowerPoint about food chains in the ocean. It asks you to sort cards that you can print off – but you could always draw or write the name of sea creatures on paper rather than printing if you don’t have access to a printer.

You can use the template on the PP to make your own oceanic food chains, and please share them with me!

As you have probably noticed, the National Geographic Kids website is one of my favourite sources of information for things related to the natural world. Not everything you read on the internet is reliable, but this website is super.

As always, well done on all your effort in Study Ladder! I will organise work for the last time this week on it, as this is our last full week of term. (I can’t believe it!) Who is going to complete every activity I have set on Study Ladder? There’s a wee challenge for you : ) All the teachers are getting ready for  the children to come back to school in August, and we can’t wait to see you all in person and hear all your chatter once more.

One last thing. If you see me out and about please say hello! I might not know all of your faces since I haven’t been teaching in your classroom, but I know all of your names and have enjoyed getting messages and emails from all of you at some time or another. I think I may have seen someone smiling at me on Viewpark Drive last week when I was out with Arran, Ena and Lottie. I wondered if it was one of you? Give me a wee shout and a wave if you know me. We are always out on walks round Burnside.

Weekly Check-in

Good morning Room 6,

I hope you’re all keeping ok. Whilst I was making breakfast this morning, Lottie made me laugh. Here she is, working from home 🐶. I hope she managed to get a lot done!

This week we have enjoyed doing some home baking, Mr Mirner likes making pizzas and we’ve been having some fun with different toppings.

We enjoyed looking in the rock pool on the world oceans page, but it made us really want to go to our favourite place – the island of Arran so that we could experience rock pooling in real life once more!

Your fantastic PowerPoint presentations inspired me to make one of my own. I’ve made a quiz for my friends this weekend using power point. Have any of you designed a quiz for your family? Power point is especially good for making picture rounds, like guess the place or celebrity. I used the  cropping function to do a “name that chin” round where the contestants only see the chin of a famous person and have to guess who it is. I bet you could make a fantastic quiz based on our “Under the Sea” topic by now!
