This afternoon we continued on with our energy topic by looking at how pneumatic systems work.
We used two syringes, some tubing, a burger box, a paper cup and a pipe cleaner. We have made our model and they all open and close using pneumatics. We just need to paint and decorate them…watch this space!
Emma Chittick came to run our second STEM session today. This time we were finding out about solar power. We learnt about how solar power works and we had a go at making our own solar farms.
On Tuesday 17th September, two scientists from the Edinburgh Observatory came to talk to us about space and rockets. They showed us part of one of the Skylark rockets that had been designed in Edinburgh 50 years ago and had been sent into space to take UV images.
We then had an opportunity to make our own rockets. These were launched in the multi-court and some fired right out of the multi-court!
We had a fantastic day at Kergord, for our second John Muir Day. The weather was perfect, even though it is still just February. The P7s were brilliant. The John Muir Award is about exploring the wild, but its also about challenging yourself, and our intrepid P7s certainly did that today. They were climbing the trees like monkeys by the end of the afternoon Well done everyone, I was very proud of you all😁😊
We carried out lots of practical science activities with Mr Rose today. We made timers work by using lemon power – the acid in individual lemons gave up to almost 1 volt. We powered LEDs and clocks and it was really interesting to make up different circuits. Some of us joined up lemons 🍋 to make the circuits more powerful.
We had a great afternoon adding feeding trays onto our bird feeding stations and making yoghurt pot feeders. We also learnt how to tie some useful knots, so that we can attach them to the posts and trees.
So far we have seen starlings, house sparrows, a robin and two herring gulls on the feeders.
So here they are, the wonderful, fun loving new P6/7s Just another blogs.glowscotland.org.uk – Shetland site
