What a fantastic day for our first SMUHA in four years. It was a perfect sunny, snowy day and so good to see the whole school community out to enjoy it.
Guiser Jarl Jade Paterson said “It was really good fun walking down to the pitch, behind the galley. I liked singing the songs and doing all the 3 cheers. I’m looking forward to seeing the SMUHA squad in school this afternoon.
Snow Day
Hi Everyone, I hope that you are managing to get outside and have a bit of fun in the snow.
DON’T FORGET TO PRACTISE SINGING THE UP HELLY AA SONG FOR FRIDAY,
(161) Up Helly Aa – The Up Helly Aa Song (with lyrics) – YouTube
Here are a few ideas for what you could do today. Don’t worry you don’t need to do everything, these are just a few suggestions.
Have fun outdoors.
• Try building a snow family with different heights of snowmen
• Build an igloo out of snow blocks- use an ice cream tub as a mould
• Create targets to fire snowballs at
Be first to get outside and see if you can make your own snowflake design in the snow, just using your footprints and walking around very carefully. Remember that snowflakes have 6 points.
• If you have a sledge, find a safe slope to sledge down
• Try capturing your fun on your camera or tablet and make a movie about it
• Practise your spelling words by writing with a stick in the snow
• Make an ice sculpture by collecting leaves, shells, fruit etc and putting them into an empty jar with some water and a looped ribbon sticking out of the top. Freeze it in the freezer then hang it outside as a decoration
Indoors
• When you have had enough of outdoor fun and need to warm up, write a story or news report about your day. If you create a report, why not film yourself reading it in the style of a newscaster and add footage from outside?
In the song ‘Let it Go’ from Frozen there is a line that says ‘in frozen fractals all around’. Find out what fractals are and have a go at drawing your own.
• Look up the weather from around the world. Create a weather map showing the world weather using symbols and a key. Create questions to ask of your map e.g. Where is the coldest place? What is the difference in temperature between the hottest and coldest places?
• Create a poem about a winter’s day
• Look out of the window and sketch the scene you see. Try using pastels or paint if you have them
• Watch a movie and write a review to share with the class when you return to school
• Research an animal that lives in a cold place and create a fact file.
Find out words for snow in as many different languages as you can.
World Book Day
What a perfect start to World Book Day. P2/3/4 and P6/7 partnered up to read together. Everyone had brought in their favourite book and in pairs / threes, sat together to share their books. It was lovely to see everyone listening and reading so well
Bird Science afternoon
Unfortunately the weather was against us this year, so we had to cancel our RSPB Schools Birdwatch. Instead Kevin Kelly came to explain to us the way that the information is used by the RSPB and the sort of birds that we are likely to see in Shetland.
After that we had an afternoon of finding out about owls. We learnt about how they live and what they eat by looking at a range of owl pellets. We had Short and Long eared owl pellets and Snowy and Barn owl too. It meant that we could compare each species.
We found lots of rats, mice, voles, birds etc in the pellets and lots of bones.
Miss Clark
On 10th February, Miss Clark had her final day of her 5 week practice with the P6/7 class. She did a super Viking project with them and everyone has written a super Viking saga and helped to make this lovely class display
Glasgow Science Visit
This afternoon we had a fantastic time watching Disgusting Digestion, the story of food. It really was disgusting and poor Miss Clark had to hold her hands out at the end to catch the final product!!!
After that we were able to try out a huge range of science activities called Body Works. It was really good fun to have a go at them all.
Fun with the skekler hats
Today Jenny came in to teach us a very old traditional ballad and them we got back to the straw hats.
We had to knot them in a row and then we joined it to make our hats.

The Lost Songs
We had a super morning with Jenny Sturgeon and Roseanne Watt, who are coming into school for four weeks to do a dialect / Shetland history project with us. Jenny started by singing a song for us and Roseanne recited a poem.
We did two activities, firstly we learnt a dialect song about spinning and then we started to make our skekler hats. We will finish them next week.
First Week Back
It has been so lovely to see everyone back. What a great start to the year.
We are starting to get ready for the RSPB birdwatch, so this afternoon while the pupil council were out, the rest of us made bird feeders.
We used up the old pine cones from Christmas and learnt to tie a reef knot, so that we’ll be able to hang them from the trees. Next we made a delicious 🤢 mixture of lard, cheese, grains, nuts and sultanas and moulded it onto the cones. We will harden them up in the fridge and hang them out next week.
