For World Book Day today, we have been up to nursery to share some stories with the bairns there. We have also attended a live author event with Michael Rosen.
Taste of Shetland Visit
On Thursday 30th January Marian Armitage from Taste of Shetland came to visit P6/7 to do a cooking demonstration. We got to try lots of new and interesting foods such as fish soup, bannocks and oatcakes. Most of the class tries and enjoyed it. In the fish soup there was squid, catfish and vegetables. We are very grateful to Marian for coming in!

Table Tennis Taster Session
Last Monday P6/7 were very lucky to be able to enjoy a table tennis taster session run by Joan Smith and Chris Graham. While some of the class were already quite seasoned table tennis players, others hadn’t played much at all. The session was well tailored to all of their experience levels and has certainly inspired some new players.
Epipen Training with Dr Armitage
As part of our “Human Body” topic we had a visit from Dr Armitage who delivered some Epipen training to us. We learned about his work as a pediatrician and how much work it takes to become a doctor. He then told us what happens when someone goes into anaphylactic shock and why they need an Epipen. We even got to try using one ourselves (not a real one though!). At the end of the session we did a quiz. Thank you Dr Armitage!

Sporting Achievements
This weekend has been a busy one for lots of our pupils.
Kirsty and Nora have been competing at the GTS winter swimming meet at Clickimin, both winning several medals.
Dylan and Ayanda have also been away competing in table tennis. They took part in the Scottish Primary Schools Table Tennis Championships in Bathgate. There were 64 bairns competing from all across Scotland, with 7 bairns travelling down from Shetland to take part.
Ayanda won his group and made it through to the top 12 play-offs, finishing 10th place overall. Dylan came second in his group, but went on to win the plate competition, which puts him 13th overall. Then they paired up for the doubles tournament and made it all the way to the final, where they lost to the top two seeded primary players in Scotland.
It is lovely to see such dedication to sport!

Children in Need
On Friday November 15th P6/7 (and Miss Newbold) dressed up as the Minions and Gru for Children in Need! They had a brilliant day and put in such a great effort. We also took part in the Pudsey hunt and colouring competition organised by the pupil council. Thank you to everyone who donated!
We were just missing Dylan and Ayanda who were away playing in a table tennis tournament and they both did really well, we are all super proud of them!
CASE Shetland Bridge Building
At the end of Term 1 we had Ewen Adamson from CASE Shetland in P6/7 to do a bridge building activity using K’nex. The bairns absolutely loved it! They worked in teams of four or five so it was a brilliant teamwork activity. Ewen and Floortje commented on how well all of them worked together! They had to find a way of making the lightest bridge which could hold the most chicken feed. The winning team of Peter, Maximus, Ella, Lucille and Sophie’s bridge held a total weight of chicken feed 20x the weight of their bridge! This beat the previous best of any other school that CASE Shetland had been to which the whole class were very excited about. Thank you to Ewen and Floortje for coming in!
Halloween in P6/7
Today we have managed to have some Halloween themed lessons:
In class PE we did some target practice aiming at some ghosts
We have made some fantastic mummy pictures, using oil pastels looking at how to blend colours
The class are now learning about Halloween homographs by playing grammar boom! 
Spelling Stations
We have been trying out different activities for practicing our spelling words to try and make it a bit more exciting. One of our favourite ways to do this has been writing them in chalk outside. Here are some photos:
