In the first week of Term 4, P6/7 took part in Da Voar Redd up. We did the Boddam loop, back up along the main road. Overall, we thought the area was fairly tidy and we were pleased to find there wasn’t too much rubbish for us to have to pick up.
Visit from Eleanor Hutcheon from UHI Shetland

On Tuesday (the first day back of Term 4) we had a visit from Eleanor Hutcheon from UHI Shetland. She came in to speak to us about electricity and circuits, which is part of our topic this term. We had met her before in Term 3 on our trip to the Newton day in Sandwick where we had already learned a little bit of what she was talking about today. We firstly spoke about how circuits work and what different components are needed to power a lightblub from a switch. Then we got to power a clock from the electrolytes in different fruits and vegetables through zinc and copper wires; and lastly we got a chance to explore circuit kits which Eleanor had brought in.
Term 4 Overview
The last term! It will be a very busy 10 weeks in P6/7 with transition visits for P7s, buddy work for the P6s and preparing for all of the end of year activities.

SMUHA 2025
Friday 14th March 2025 – the big day had finally arrived for Jarl Peter and his P7 squad!
The bairns had worked so hard to put together their helmets, shields and bill. They also couldn’t have done it without the help of the P6s or the parents who helped with the cloaks – and Mrs Leslie!
It was very special to have them joined by their own classmate Ruby, who was in Michael Farmer’s squad this year. We even managed to squeeze in a photo of all the Primary 7s together.
Well done to Peter for leading his squad on the day and for having the confidence to get on the stage to do a speech in front of everyone – we were all extremely proud of you.
Euroquiz
A couple of weeks ago, the Euroquiz team from Dunrossness took on 14 other teams from across Shetland in the local heats at Islesburgh. They had been working very hard over the term revising geography, history, cultural affairs and general knowledge about Europe to get themselves prepared.
Some of the questions were very difficult – even the teachers who were there were struggling! Well done and good luck to the team from Aith Primary School who took first place. They will be travelling to Edinburgh in June to take on the finals. Afterwards, we enjoyed lunch in the sun at the King Harold’s Street playpark. It was a really lovely day and the bairns were excellent ambassadors for the school.
World Book Day
For World Book Day today, we have been up to nursery to share some stories with the bairns there. We have also attended a live author event with Michael Rosen.
Taste of Shetland Visit
On Thursday 30th January Marian Armitage from Taste of Shetland came to visit P6/7 to do a cooking demonstration. We got to try lots of new and interesting foods such as fish soup, bannocks and oatcakes. Most of the class tries and enjoyed it. In the fish soup there was squid, catfish and vegetables. We are very grateful to Marian for coming in!

Table Tennis Taster Session
Last Monday P6/7 were very lucky to be able to enjoy a table tennis taster session run by Joan Smith and Chris Graham. While some of the class were already quite seasoned table tennis players, others hadn’t played much at all. The session was well tailored to all of their experience levels and has certainly inspired some new players.
Epipen Training with Dr Armitage
As part of our “Human Body” topic we had a visit from Dr Armitage who delivered some Epipen training to us. We learned about his work as a pediatrician and how much work it takes to become a doctor. He then told us what happens when someone goes into anaphylactic shock and why they need an Epipen. We even got to try using one ourselves (not a real one though!). At the end of the session we did a quiz. Thank you Dr Armitage!
