P4a Show and Tell

In class, we are working on talking and listening skills.  Starting after the Easter break we are planning to do a block of ‘Show and Tell’ where you can talk about a special object. You have been given a slot to do your short talk in class. The timetable of slots is posted below.

To prepare for this, you should take a photo of your special object on your iPad. The object should not be brought into school.

To help them with their talk, children should consider the following points:

  • What is the object?
  • Where did you get it?
  • What do you do with it?
  • Why is it special to you?

You can add more information on your object if they want to. You can practice your talk at home to help with your confidence.

Peebles CAN garden visit.

P4a had a brilliant time at the Peebles CAN garden last week.  Heather and Rachel taught us so much about various herbs and plants.  We were asked to plant some peas and a few varieties of hedgerow plants.  We learned how to space them out, how to support them as they got bigger and how to protect them whilst they were still small.

If you would like to keep an eye on the progress of our seedlings and plants, Peebles CAN would be delighted to welcome you back at any time.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Peebles CAN and to our parent helpers.  We wouldn’t have been able to attend the gardens without you offering us  your time.

School outing letter

The children in P4 have brought home a consent letter for an outing to the Peebles CAN garden on Tuesday 15th March (P4a) and Tuesday 22nd March (P4b).

We would appreciate it if these could be returned as soon as possible.  We will aim to get back to any P4a volunteers by Friday 11th March and P4b volunteers next week.

Many thanks

Multiplication games

Today we were making and playing games to help with our learning of the 6 and 8 times tables.

There were a range of games being created, including bingo, pairs and some very creative board games.

If you are looking for more ideas or games to play, head to our Supporting Learning at Home tab here on the blog or you can go to Teams:  our Supporting Learning at Home folder is in the General channel,  under the Files tab.

Investigating friction

Today P4a were learning about friction.  We designed an investigation to find out which surface created the most friction on a toy car.  We came up with an hypothesis and tested it out.

We had a great discussion about whether this investigation was truly a ‘fair test’ or whether other factors may have affected our results.

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year and welcome back to our third block of primary 4, we hope you all had a lovely break.

We are starting this block with our Scottish focus.  We will be studying the poem ‘The Wally Dug’ (author anonymous) and using this to look at some Scots dialect and use of language.  We will be looking at a range of Scottish artists and using their styles and techniques to inspire some art of our own.  In numeracy we will be recapping and extending our knowledge of multiplication and division.  There are lots of games and rhymes you can use if you wish to support this leaning at home and we will update our ‘Supporting learning at home’ tab in due course.  We are also learning about fractions and information handling through our practical maths.  Our science focus will be on forces and we have lots of exciting practical investigations planned which are designed to allow the children to explore and investigate their learning around this topic.  Our reading, spelling and grammar will continue along the same format as in the previous 2 blocks; we will be covering comprehension skills,  fact or opinion, conjunctions, singular and plural and dictionary skills. In health and wellbeing we are looking at food journeys, how advertising affects our choices and being resilient.

As always, if you have any questions or queries please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us and we hope you all stay healthy and well this 2022.

Best wishes,

The P4 team.

P4 Christmas party

We had a fantastic time at our Christmas party last week.  It was lovely seeing everyone all dressed up in their party clothes.

We would like to send a huge thank you to the Parent Council for the party bags they gave  us all.

Lighting up our art work

This week P4a brought science and art together.  We have been learning about electricity and electrical circuits.   We investigated how we could build a circuit in order to make a lightbulb light up.  We then decided on a topic of art that we could bring to life  by fitting it over our circuits.  The class picked the train from the film Polar Express and here are the results.

Block 2

We got off to a super start to our block 2 learning and we have so much more to come.

Our writing focus this block is exposition (persuasion) and we have some interesting example texts to inspire our own writing.  I wonder just how persuasive P4 can be…… Through our reading we will be exploring the skill of skimming and scanning as well as learning a bit more about inference.

In maths we are continuing and developing our learning of addition and subtraction strategies and learning about money up to £20 and giving change from £5 and £10.  We will put links to some games you can play at home to consolidate this learning on Teams and the Supporting Learning at Home tab on this blog.

Our building resilience focus is Keeping Connected and more information relating to this was attached to the newsletter sent out  by Mrs Ward last week.  We will also be learning some basic first aid and what foods keep us healthy.

In Science we are exploring sources of energy, magnetism and electricity/electrical circuits.  We are looking forward to having a lot of fun with this.

It’s a busy term with lots going on and we are all looking forward to speaking with you all during our parents consultations in a few weeks time.
