Water lilies

Claude Monet was a famous artist who painted many water colours of water lilies at Giverny in France.

We experimented with a wash of colour, dabbing paint like the Impressionists did and even using a mixture of watercolour paints and coloured pencils.

Many of us found the Impressionist style of painting very calming and therapeutic.

We enjoyed exploring how water is important in our Art work and by adding a little or a lot of water we can create quite different effects with our paints.

Successes of the week

We think we have done well in these things this week:

Procedural writing about how to make toast.

Some  of us think the content of our procedures and our presentation  have improved.

A lot of us were surprised by how good we were at rounding to the nearest 10.

We enjoyed working with larger numbers – carrying and exchanging

We enjoyed Talking and Listening sessions this week but, were surprised at how challenging the talking to an audience was.

A little bit of toast

This morning we watched how to make toast. Then we wrote a procedure about it.

We had to have a title, purpose, goal, materials and numbered steps to explain how to make toast.

This was a modelled piece of writing so, we discussed it with our teacher then she modelled how we should set it out.

Next week we will try to write a procedure independently.

Rounding

We have been learning about rounding numbers to the nearest ten this week.

We know that the last number must be a zero if we are rounding to the nearest 10.

The trick one was 480 as it stays the same.

Down my street

We sorted pictures into sets. This is called classifying. We had to work co-operatively with each other and be respectful to the group leader.

We worked out how to represent the pictures with cubes and turned the data into a graph.

At first it was tricky working in a group but, then we learned to turn take, compromise and listen to others.

Water as a gas

We had to have a Health and Safety talk before we did our experiment. We could not do this experiment ourselves. An adult had to demonstrate it because it involved boiling water and we could get scalded if the water went onto our skin. So, for this experiment we had to watch and listen carefully and stay a safe distance from the equipment.

Our goal was to explore water in its gas state so, we watched what happened when cold water was heated up in a kettle. The bubbles stared off tiny and moving slowly then they got bigger and bigger as the water got hotter.

The bubbles were full of air or gas.

When the water was at 100oC it was at boiling point. Then steam started to come out of the spout. This was water in its gas state. The bubbles in the boiling water were now huge.

When a mirror was held over the spout the steam hit the cold surface, it became condensated and we witnessed the steam turning back into liquid water again.

We got really excited when we looked out of our classroom window and saw what was happening on the Nursery  roof. The water was evaporating, steam was rising into the air and this was us seeing water as a gas in real life. We couldn’t have planned it better!

Plant life

For Health and Well-being we have been thinking about and discussing what plants need to flourish and grow.

We remembered the story about poppies in Flanders growing in the mud . We know they need water, soil and sunlight to be able to grow.

We couldn’t believe how tiny the poppy seeds are. There are two varieties here. One looks like ground pepper and the other looks like the pepper you have to grind. It’s amazing to think that these tiny seeds might grow into beautiful poppies.

We have scattered them to see if they grow.

At home some of the class have already been busy planting. We have  peppers, courgettes, radish, lettuce, garlic and sunflowers. Some of these were planted in our gardens, allotments and greenhouses.

We have to remember to keep watering our plants and checking they are getting enough sunshine to grow properly.

Calculator fun

Today we worked in pairs to use calculators. We were very excited about using the calculators and we had lots of fun. We realised we couldn’t always trust the answer so we learned to double check our answers by using our mental strategies.
