Weather permitting, our sports day will be on Friday 16th June from 1.00pm at Dam Park. Pupils can wear a t-shirt in their house colour at the event.

I’m an Engineer 2017 P7
Well done to our two P7 teams that made it through to the final challenge at the town hall earlier this week. They showed off their drone-inspired aircraft and then had a live challenge to design a winch to transport people to and from the aircraft. The pupils had to utilise a range of creativity and employability skills to identify a workable solution to this problem. Both teams were presented with certificates by Mr Hutchinson, the Head of the Education Service.
Well done also goes to Arnar. His design for the ‘I’m an Engineer’ logo was chosen to go on the certificates.
Drama Club Theatre Trip
Yesterday, our Drama Club went up to Glasgow to watch a performance of Fantastic Mr Fox. They had the opporutnity to reflect on how professional actors perform and how shows are staged. They all had a fantastic time! The cost of this trip was covered through a grant award to the Drama Club earlier this session.

I’m an Engineer Competition Winners
Well done to our budding engineers in Primary 3. They successfully achieved first place in the ‘I’m an Engineer’ Competition held at Ayr Town Hall. The winning team designed a fantastic helicopter that really impressed the judges – well done!
The Big Splash!
Holmston’s ‘Big Splash’ launched today with the P6 visiting Millport and the P1 and 2s going to Culzean. We also had visitors from Ayr Port to teach us all about the jobs that are needed to ensure that the ships dock and can be loaded or unloaded. We also had representatives from BAE systems to show us how naval ships are designed and built. They told us about the many different jobs from designers and builders to bakers and doctors that all contribute to getting a ship to sail.

CBBC Fantasy Game Show
The BBC are currently looking for applicants of all abilities, aged between 9-13 years to take part in a new fantasy gameshow that will be filmed in Scotland over the summer months. The successful candidates will get a chance to test their skill, determination and bravery against a series of physical and mental challenges. The application deadline is midnight Friday 19th May 2017.

Boswell Book Festival
Boswell Book Festival is the world’s only festival dedicated to the art of biography, and this 7th edition has an even wider selection of talks from family history and stories of World war II to the life stories of bakers, planters, lovers, adventurers, judges, poets, painters, financiers and Tsars, to the sheer glamour of the worlds of theatre and fashion.

Achievements
Well done to our football team. They were great ambassadors for the school during a recent match against Symington Primary earlier in the week. They demonstrated our school values and were excellent sports people.
Congratulations to our ‘design a book cover’ competition winners. All the entries were of a very high standard and difficult to judge but eventually a winner was chosen from each stage. The parents running the book fayre chose the books for the winners.
Parent and Pupil Dyslexia Workshops

Neil is is a freelance consultant and trainer who created the concept of Dyslexia Friendly Schools. He is an experienced teacher who has taught for 26 years, working with children with a wide range of ages, needs and ability. He is known for his ability to bring the classroom into his training and for providing lively, entertaining and thought provoking opportunities for teachers, parents and pupils.
Naming the Gritters!
Earlier in the year we had a visit from ScotlandTranServ. Mr Stewart visited the school with a gritter and taught the pupils about winter services and how the gritters keep motorists on the move during the winter months as well as learning about the affect of salt on the ice. He set a competition to name two of the new gritters – well done to Megan and Piper for their winning ideas!
Easter Holiday – School Finishes at 2.30pm
Please note that the school closes for the Easter Holiday on Friday 31st March at 2.30pm. We re-open on Tuesday 18th April. We hope you all have a relaxing and enjoyable break.
Red Nose Day
Thank-you to everyone who made donations today or purchased a red nose earlier in the week. In our assembly today we found out about how our money is used both abroad and at home. We also learned the School Red Nose song “Put a Nose on It!”. Here are some pictures from our assembly.
The Big Pedal 2017
Get set… we’re taking part in The Big Pedal 2017, the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge that inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school. The challenge runs from 27th to 31st March. It’s free to enter and we would love everyone to be involved.
On each day of the challenge schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school. Our five days will determine our final position in the challenge. We’ll be competing against other schools right across the UK, and if we clock up the most bike and scooter journeys we’ll win!
 All you need to do is encourage your child(ren) to cycle or scoot to school every day during the event, and join them on their way – parent and sibling journeys count too!
Please remember to bring a lock for you bike or scooter.
STEM Fayre 2017
The pupils had a fantastic time showing off their STEM skills and knowldege at our STEM Fayre last Friday. There was a great turn-out of parents and family members to support the event and try their hand at some of the experiments and puzzles. Visitors commmented on the enthusiasm of our scientists, engineers, technicians and mathematicians of the future!
92nd Ayrshire Music Festival
Congratulations to our P1 class for coming second in their heat at the Ayrshire Music Festival. They performed two action songs and the judges commented on how well they sang. We will look forward to seeing their winning performance during our Easter Service.
