Mangahigh Challenge Fai-To!

fai-to

You have been offered the chance to challenge another school to a Fai-To. If your students decide to proceed with the Fai-To challenge, they will face up to 9 rounds of head to head mathematics competition.

How Fai-To Works
When you next log in, you will be offered a choice of two different schools to challenge. You can also decide not to challenge anyone (boo!). If 6 pupils vote to challenge one of the schools, then the Fai-To is on, and the first school to win 5 rounds of the Fai-To is the Winner. The defending school will receive 1 advantage round for free. Each subsequent round lasts 24 hours, and you score points by winning medal points as usual. Fai-To does not affect the way that you use Mangahigh.

As the Challenger, if we win the Fai-To, we will capture the Defender’s current trophy for your cabinet. You can upgrade your trophies by winning more Fai-Tos.  The honour of the school is at stake!

P5H Homework and Reminders – w/b 7/11/16

Good afternoon, I hope you have had a lovely weekend and are rested and relaxed ready for another busy week. Please keep reading for your homework and reminders.

Spelling: Please complete either less or silent w in your spelling homework jotter for Thursday. You all now have a new spelling homework activity grid and I have explained each activity to you. If there are any you are unsure of please let me know in class and I will go back over them. Please remember to complete a different spelling activity from this grid each week.

Book Detectives:

Please remember your Book Detectives homework is due for Tuesday this week as we have swapped our language days.  If you have forgotten what your homework was you can see it on your Book Detective blog posted last week.

Personal Reading Challenge:  Your reading challenge will continue until the end of term. You should read at least 4 books by Tuesday 20th December. Most of you have made a good start to the challenge, keep it up!

Remember you can bring a book from home into school each day and you can read it during our ERIC sessions. This will help you get through your book quicker.

Maths:  This week Mrs O’Neill has posted another set of worded problems on your maths homework blog.  Please complete these in  your maths homework jotter. We have discussed how to do these questions in class. As always, please read each question carefully. You should ensure you are showing workings AND giving a sentence answer.

It can be a bit tricky to decide what the question is asking but we will have lots of practice this term so it should become easier as the weeks go by. We will also be practicing these types of questions in class too.

Please remember that although the blog says these questions are due for Friday, yours are due for Thursday.

Here are your reminders for this week.

  1. P. E. is on Tuesday and Thursday.  As both our P.E. sessions are particularly energetic please ensure you have a full kit to change into: shorts, trainers and a change of top. Girls, please remember to bring socks if you are wearing tights. Also please remember to have a full water bottle with you.
  2. Photographs should be returned to school by Thursday at the latest.
  3. If you have not already done so please remember to return your walking consent form.
  4. A number of you have still not covered your homework jotters. Please try to have this done as soon as possible with your name and type of homework clearly marked on the front.

Enjoy what’s left of the weekend.

See you in the morning.

Mrs Hughes

P5S – Brazil – Beatriz Milhazes Artwork

Image result for brazil flag

For homework, and in class, we have been looking at the work of Brazilian artist, Beatriz Milhazes.  Each of you chose your favourite painting and began creating your own version of it last week. Lots of you have found it quite tricky as these paintings contain many different shapes and colours.

I have to say I am delighted at just how well they are turning out. I cannot wait to show off your final creations. They are taking a while because the paintings are so detailed however we should have them completed later this week. Watch this space!

Here are some photographs of your designs so far.

P5S – Brazil – Mapping Task

Image result for brazil flag

Last week for our Brazil topic we had to find our where Brazil was in the world in relation to Scotland. We also had to research and find a number of important locations within Brazil and its bordering countries. What fun can be had with Google Maps!

Once we had individually recorded the information on our own maps, we transferred it to a larger group map which is now on our wall space in class. A few of our new groups need to work on their listening skills as the Pacific Ocean seems to have flooded some of Brazil’s bordering countries on the maps.  Well done to the groups who realised their mistake and fixed it in time.

Please show someone at home your completed map and tell them some information about the locations on your map. Which city is the capital of Brazil? Which is the largest city in Brazil? Can you remember how many people live there? Where are Scotland and Brazil located on the map?

P1 Homework week beginning 7/11/16

New sounds g and o.  Continue to practise all other sounds.

Wordwalls-if your child has a highlighted word on their wall, that means that I am happy they have shown me they are secure with the word.  Please concentrate on the words which have been dotted.  Words should be practised every night in and out of the order they appear on the wall to avoid children memorising them!

New reading books-swapped on Wednesday.  Please ensure your child has their reading book in their bag every day so that we have enough copies to swap.

Maths -booklet activity at any point in the week.

Toys sheet-at any point-if you don’t see Grandparents until the weekend then it is fine to leave it until then.

As  it begins to get colder, please ensure your child is appropriately dressed for going out in the chillier weather as we continue to do our daily mile.  Gloves, scarves and hats should be named clearly .

We are going to the library on Tuesday this week.  Children will all bring a library book home for you to enjoy with them.

Thank you for your parent evening appointment letters.  I will be putting a note in your child’s book bag on Monday with your alloted time.  I have tried to accommodate requests as much as possible and look forward to meeting with you  all.

Best wishes

Mrs Hunter

15337265309_dac5cd173bDuring technologies, the class are learning to understand simple computer programming. We have been using the ScratchJr app for tablets and iPads. This is a great app that introduces computer coding to 5-7 year olds. You can find out more information about this free app on the website by clicking the picture above.

If you or your child has a tablet, you can download the app to use at home. Let me know if you manage to create something together using ScratchJr at home!

P3/2 – Testing the Lunchboxes

After completing the new and improved lunchboxes for Mr Grinling, it was time to test them out! The lunchboxes were sent down the line one at a time to see how well (or not so well!) they travelled from top to bottom. We used a water spray to pretend it was raining to test how waterproof the boxes were. We also pelted the boxes with balls of paper to see how they would withstand being hit and poked at by the seagulls.

Sadly, some of the lunchboxes did not make it down the line. However, the designers quickly suggested improvements they would make to stop this from happening again. Everyone did a really great job and could explain what they had done well throughout the whole design process, and what they would improve for next time.

Well done P3/2!
