P5S – Eco Week – No Paper Day!

Image result for eco schools

Today for the start of our Eco Week we had a “No Paper” Day in school. This meant no paper at all: no books, no jotters, no scrap paper, no post-its, no paper towels ……. just no paper! How did we do? Tell someone at home.

The point of today’s exercise was to get you thinking about just how much paper we use on a daily basis. Lots! We need to try and cut back wherever possible to help reduce the amount being used. Let’s see if we can keep it up and use less paper for the rest of the term. It can be done!

Today we took part in a number of paperless activities. Our survey with P7M was completed on whiteboards and the iPads. Our class novel was read from the iPad. We practiced the four operations using Math Slide on the iPads (what fun that was!). This week’s blind spelling test was completed on whiteboards and even your scores were recorded on the big board. Finally our reading comprehension lesson, linked to our class novel, was all drama based as you were introduced to the world of “Freeze Frame”. Again, what fun we had with that! A very busy day …….. with no paper!

P5S – Big Pedal Day 1

Image result for bikes clipart

Today we had our first Big Pedal session. We had 9 bikes, 3 scooters and one supporter (thank you Kate’s dad) brought to school today. Hopefully tomorrow we will have a few more! It is much more fun biking or scootering around the playground. I might even give it a try myself tomorrow! Please remember you must bring a helmet to wear during these sessions.

P5S and P7M Litter Survey

As part of our Eco Week, P5S and P7M joined forces this morning to collect and display information on the amount of litter that had collected in the different areas within our playground; Infants, Middle and Upper.

In pairs, or trios, you worked together to collect the information. You then had to display your findings in a bar graph. Both Miss McDowall and I were delighted at just how well you all worked together. It was lovely to see!

P5S – Homework w/b 20.3.17

Good afternoon everyone! I hope you have been having a lovely weekend so far. Here is your homework for the coming week. Due to our upcoming Eco Week there are slight changes. Please keep reading to see our reminders (there are a lot of them this week).

Spelling: Units 2 and 31 should be completed for Friday. As always, each word should be written out three times and an uplevelled sentence should be written for each spelling rule word. Please remember to consider your VCOP in each sentence.

This week I would like you to continue focusing on using  ambitious connectives in each sentence again. Here are some examples: before, as well as, however, also, although and after. Quite a few of you did not do this last week.  Try to include one in each sentence. Remember this does not mean you forget about uplevelling your openers and vocabulary. We are trying to use all of these together to make your sentences the best they can be.

Reading:  You have a new core reader to complete at home. Please complete the book for Thursday. There will be no written homework for this as all tasks will be completed in class. As always, if there is any vocabulary you are unsure of, please take a note of it and we will discuss it in class on Thursday.

Please remember to read aloud to someone at home. Once again, your feedback form should be completed, if possible, by the person who heard you read and returned to school for Thursday. A huge thank you to all of the parents, grandparents and aunts who took the time to complete this last week. I enjoyed reading your comments!

Personal Reading Challenge: We now have 2 weeks of reading left. A number of you have reached, or are close to reaching, the target number of books set at the beginning of this term. Well done! There is still time for the rest of you to make that last push in the hope of reaching your target. Please remember to bring your book to school as this will allow you to read it during our ERIC sessions.

Please remember to record the books in your reading passport as you finish them. The passport is kept in class. Remember this is your record of the number of books you have read so far this term.

Maths: There is no maths homework this week due to having Eco activities to complete. If you wish, additional practice of your multiplication tables can be done using the links below.

Eco Week:  This week I would like you to choose an activity to complete for Friday.  A link for the activities will be posted on Monday. The activity you choose is up to you! On Friday you will be asked to present this aspect of your homework to the class and explain why you chose it.

Please see here for more details on what has been planned by the Eco Committee this week.

Red Nose Day: A number of activities have been arranged for this week to raise money for Red Nose Day. On Monday there will be a chance to “Guess the Number of Sweets” at 10p a go.  There will be a bake sale on Tuesday with all cakes being  10p. On Thursday Primary 5 will be taking part in a danceathon and a donation of 50p is required to participate. Finally on Friday there will be a non-uniform day where you should wear something red to school. A donation of £1.00 has been suggested for doing so.

  1. As part of our Eco Week each class will have the chance to earn “eco points”. To help us raise as many points as possible I would like you to try and bring in a healthy snack for break. You could also bring in a water bottle (instead of cartons of juice) as this will help us gain even more points. One point can be gained for every snack and every water bottle brought in (each day). That is a lot of points!
  2. On Monday we are having a “No Paper Day”. This includes the use of paper towels. There are hand dryers which can be used however if you would rather you may bring in a small hand towel to use instead.
  3. P.E. is on Tuesday and Friday . If you have not already done so, please ensure you have a P.E. kit in school.
  4. Our next library visit is on Tuesday 21st March. We require one parent helper. Please click here for further details.
  5. Please ensure your Parents’ Night confirmation slip is returned as soon as possible.
  6. All Pupil/Parent Response sheets should be returned to school by FridayThis will allow me to prepare for any areas your parents may wish to discuss at their appointment.
  7. This week is our first Big Pedal week. You may bring your bike or scooter to school. Please remember a helmet must be worn during our daily sessions in the playground. A plastic bag should be brought to protect your bike seat from the rain.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend. See you all on Monday.

P5S – Spelling Stars!

Image result for spelling

This week for our spelling sentences we were to focus on using ambitious connectives. Here are some wonderful examples from those of you who included them in your sentences. Well done!

Lucy S – Faithfully my mum, dad and Erin have remained off chocolate for Lent whereas I had an incident with a chocolate coin one lunchtime!

Lucas – Back in medieval times, they didn’t have paper so they had to use parchment and a feather.

Innis  Unicorns are mythical animals although I still think they are real.

Chloe M – Sarah surprised her family by announcing that she was betrothed to Bob even though her family didn’t like him.

Olivia – Magically the mythical creature appeared however it was just my imagination.

Luca – At university the bashful student turned red with embarrassment as well as getting the hiccups during her presentation.

P4-5 Science Masterclass

Image result for mad scientist

What a busy hour that was yesterday afternoon! In our Science Masterclass everyone had the chance to make a lava lamp.

There was great excitement at how the water and oil mixed when we were putting the oil in the bottle. We then had to wait until the oil and water had separated before we could add our food colouring. Next we added a small piece of Alka-Seltzer tablet to create the bubbles.

Now for the science bit. Can you remember why the water and oil separate? The oil separates on top of the water because it has a lower density than water. The food colouring falls through the oil and mixes with the water at the bottom of the bottle. The Alka-Seltzer tablet releases small bubbles of carbon dioxide gas that rise to the top taking the coloured water with it. Alka-Seltzer contains citric acid and baking soda which react with the water to form the bubbles.

Remember to show someone at home how it all works. Here are a few photographs from our session. Chloe S was our photographer.

P5S – Pointillism Painting

Image result for pointillism georges seurat

Last week for homework you looked at the work of Georges Seurat who uses Pointillism in his paintings (just like the one above). Pointillism is a technique which uses small, distinct dots of colour to form the image.

Today in class you used the same technique to create your own version of both a male and female brown trout. I am looking forward to showing your finished creations off in a couple of weeks at Parents’ Night.

Here are a few photographs of you hard at work.

P5S – Rugby Fun

Image result for rugby clipart

What a busy morning we had! We finished it off with our first rugby session with Ross who came in to teach you some moves and tactics of the game.

To warm up we started off with a game of gym tig before moving onto a game of balance tig. Next you were put into teams to play a game of “10 pass rugby”. You played this very well, especially when you realised that it became much easier to pass when everyone spaced out a lot more.

To finish today you played the “Numbers” game where you went up against one of your classmates to try and score a rugby try. Again, this looked like a lot of fun and we had some great moves going on. Some of you just need to remember to keep both hands on the ball for the try to count.

P5S – Hot Seating!

Image result for dogs clipart

This morning we continued with our class novel: One Dog and his Boy by Eva Ibbotson. I am delighted at just how much you are enjoying this book. Please tell someone at home what has happened so far.

Today we had a few of you in the “hot seat” where you became one of the characters in the book: Hal, Kayley or Fleck. Everyone had to decide on a question they would like to ask each of these characters …… and what fabulous questions we had!

It is called a “hot seat” because you need to think quickly and respond to the questions posed by your classmates. I am so pleased you enjoyed this activity as it is a great way to not only explore the characters and plot of a story but it also builds on your communication skills. As we continue with our novel, we will have other opportunities to take part in this type of activity so if you didn’t get a chance today, your time in the “seat” will happen.

P5S – Making Music!

Image result for music notes

Today we had Mrs Lyle in teaching us some more about rhythm and another new note. We learned a new song about a house in New Orleans. Can you remember the words to tell someone at home?

Much fun was had by everyone when you got the opportunity to use the drumsticks. I was very impressed at just how well you all worked this morning – well done everyone!

P4/P5 – Science Masterclass

Image result for mad scientist

Just a wee reminder for all our Masterclass scientists – please remember to bring an empty plastic bottle to our Masterclass session on Wednesday. Your bottle should be no bigger than 50cl. If you are able to bring more than one that would be very helpful. You may bring it in on Wednesday or hand it into my class beforehand if you wish.

P5S – World Book Day

Image result for books clipart

Today we celebrated World Book Day in school. PJs and onsies were worn alongside book character costumes. Thank you to everyone who paid a donation to do so. Another thank you to those of you who took part in the readathon to raise money for new literacy resources for our school. You individuals raised a whopping £140.00 sponsor money. Added to the £19.50 donations we received, our class raised £161.50 towards the amazing total overall ……. over £2000.00.

In class we had lots of activities going on that were all linked to reading. We read some more of our class novel, One Dog and his Boy. We had a Read and Munch with P2/1 which was so successful we are planning more. We had lots of ERIC time. Our Bounce Back session today had you all comfy on the floor where I think some of you struggled to stay awake! We also played Conscious Alley for the first time which was linked to our class novel. Our day ended with a whole school assembly dedicated to reading. One of our class was even the lucky winner of the best costume for P4-5 and received a token to spend on ……. books!

The enthusiasm for reading has increased greatly over the last few months and I really hope it continues. Books are wonderful and we can learn so much from them.

Here are some photographs from our very busy day. Enjoy!

P5 – BBC Ten Pieces Concert

Today Primary 5 had the chance to visit the City Halls in Glasgow to be a part of the audience for the BBC Ten Pieces concert. What a wonderful experience it was!

We had the opportunity to watch the Scottish Symphony Orchestra perform a number of pieces. They ranged from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony to Stravinsky’s Firebird. Quite a few of the numbers had us dancing in our seats and it was so lovely to see so many of you get so involved in the music. It is the first time I have had the pleasure of watching a symphony orchestra and I was very impressed. Many of you also said just how much you enjoyed it.

The photograph above is the orchestra playing this afternoon. Can you remember the names of some of the instruments that were played?

A huge thank you to our parent helpers who joined us this afternoon. I hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we did.

P5S – Reminder

Image result for fruit

Please remember that we will be having a “Read and Munch” with P2/1 tomorrow (Thursday) as part of our World Book Day. You should bring your favourite book or your personal reader along with a piece of fruit (fruit is optional).

You may also dress up as your favourite book character or wear your Pjs/onsie. If you are not dressing up, school uniform should be worn. A £1 donation is suggested for doing so. Any readathon sponsor money should also be brought in tomorrow.

See you in the morning!

P5S – Let’s Talk!

Image result for talking mouth clipart

Today you presented your solo presentations to the class and what a wide range of topics were being discussed. We had sports, animals, birds of prey, bad guys from Star Wars, hobbies, places you had visited, trains, games, Youtube, and pets, to name a few. I certainly learned a lot today! I hope you all did too.

Your official feedback from me will follow shortly (once I have typed it up) but we had a quick chat as to what went well and areas we could improve on for next time. I was delighted to see just how many of you took on previous feedback about ensuring you made adequate eye contact with your audience. There was a huge improvement in this area – well done! As Mikey pointed out, we had a lot of clear speaking voices today and we were able to hear everything that was being said.

Next steps for some of you will be to try and read a little less from your notes or slides. A quick look at your notes before looking up is all that is needed. This will also help ensure you are making eye contact with your audience. Others will maybe need to try and aim to be within the allocated timescale. A little more information, or less, is sometimes all that is needed to help with this.

Here are photographs from this morning’s presentations along with the props that some of you brought in.

P5S – Gymnastics

Image result for gymnastics

In gymnastics we moved onto the equipment. In groups we are working our way around the stations and had to consider how we could use the equipment to show the movements we have been practicing. We didn’t manage to get around them all, however we will continue with the stations next week so you will have a chance to try each of them.

Here are a few action shots of you showing off your moves. Please tell someone at home what moves you are doing.
