P5S – Let’s Talk!

Today you presented your solo presentations to the class and what a wide range of topics were being discussed. We had sports, animals, birds of prey, bad guys from Star Wars, hobbies, places you had visited, trains, games, Youtube, and pets, to name a few. I certainly learned a lot today! I hope you all did too.

Your official feedback from me will follow shortly (once I have typed it up) but we had a quick chat as to what went well and areas we could improve on for next time. I was delighted to see just how many of you took on previous feedback about ensuring you made adequate eye contact with your audience. There was a huge improvement in this area – well done! As Mikey pointed out, we had a lot of clear speaking voices today and we were able to hear everything that was being said.

Next steps for some of you will be to try and read a little less from your notes or slides. A quick look at your notes before looking up is all that is needed. This will also help ensure you are making eye contact with your audience. Others will maybe need to try and aim to be within the allocated timescale. A little more information, or less, is sometimes all that is needed to help with this.

Here are photographs from this morning’s presentations along with the props that some of you brought in.

Over the next few weeks you should prepare a solo talk which you will present to the class on Tuesday 28th February. This talk can be on a topic of your choice. The criteria and task sheet for this task can be found below.

Solo Talk Presentation

Learning Outcome:  I can research a topic of my choice and create a detailed presentation.

Using what I know about the features of different types of texts, I can find, select and sort information from a variety of sources and use this for different purposes. LIT 2-14a

Skill for Learning

Application & Knowledge: I can apply my knowledge of a topic of my choice, to plan and produce an interesting presentation.

 Skill for Work

I can organise my time and resources independently to ensure my presentation is completed in the allocated time.

Background

To build on your presentation skills you have to prepare a solo talk to present to your peers. Presentations play a huge part in our learning and being able to present to your peers, with confidence, is a great skill to learn.

Task

What you need to know: You are free to complete your solo talk presentation on any topic you wish. It would be best if you were to pick a topic you are interested in, or involved in already, as this way you will have personal knowledge about the subject you are talking about. For example, it could be about a sport you are involved in, a club you attend, a place you have visited. Your talk should be between 2-3 minutes in length.

What you need to do: You need to plan and prepare a talk on a topic of your choice. You may use props and/or visual aids. If you make a PowerPoint it should not be full of writing as this will ensure you are not reading directly from the slides. Photographs may be included which will help prompt you during your talk. Please choose a way you feel will best help you to demonstrate your knowledge of your chosen topic. This project is all homework based therefore you need to think about the resources you will have access to: books, library, internet, personal accounts etc.

What you need to think about: You can use whatever you need to describe your chosen topic: photographs, videos, props etc. Try to think about why you picked this topic to talk about. Remember some people in class may know nothing about the topic you have chosen to discuss, so you must explain it in detail.

How to get started: Get all of your ideas down on paper and then decide which ones are the most relevant and will best engage your audience.

Product Criteria

·         You have 3 weeks to pull your presentation together so use your time wisely. You will be presenting your information to the class on Tuesday 28th February 2017.

·         This is an independent research project. It is your responsibility to organise your time effectively and ensure you are putting in enough effort.

·         Everyone will approach this task in different ways so don’t worry if your friends are doing something different from you. Have faith in what you have to say and it will all work out.

·         This is your chance to show just how well you can take responsibility for your own learning.

Happy researching!
