Sorry the blog is later than usual. There were some hiccups with the site just after 3pm! Today we were looking at a 10 frame which has 10 squares or rectangles and helps us to work out our number bonds to 10. Why not try at home with a piece of paper, play with an adult older brother or sister?
We started to think about things that are fair and unfair. We are talking in groups to get some ideas and tomorrow we will be acting out the scenarios. These will be recorded and there should be some excellent photos tomorrow showing great expression and actions.
Following on from yesterday, we were talking about healthy choices for playtime snacks. P2 sorted out snacks into healthy choices and ones that are for a treat. Everybody was able to sort them no problem but now we have to start deciding to eat them! Why not bring a piece of fruit to school for playpiece?
Primary 2 were thinking about how to keep healthy today. We learned about why we need food and what type of nutrients there are in different foods. We all had pictures of food and had to find other people in the class who were in the same food group as us and then stick them onto our eatwell plate. We thought about healthy meals and we knew the healthy choices to make but agreed that we didn’t always make the healthy choice!
To practise our mental maths we went to the ICT suite and used a programme www.ictgames.com/numberFacts.htm. We played the game and played bingo at the same time!!
This is a great way to develop our mental maths skills!
Everyone was very pleased with their writing about a character in their reading book. We thought about what they looked like, what they wore and what they did in the story. Our teacher was very pleased with our first attempt at this activity.
We practised playing dominoes and are getting better at recognising numbers by the patterns on the dominoes without having to count the dots.
In the gym hall we were absolutely brilliant at passing and trapping the ball. Look out for a Primary 2 football team – we certainly have the basic skills!
Hopefully there will be photos on tomorrow’s blog.
We were inspired by our autumn walk yesterday. We collected leaves to use to create our works of art today. We had to choose autumn colours to add to our pictures.
Welcome back after our October holidays! We had a very busy day today and couldn’t believe it was already 3 o’clock when the bell rang!
One of activities today was to design a new tiled floor for Mrs McMillan’s kitchen. We had to investigate different 2D shapes to see which would be best to tile with. Mrs McMillan didn’t want any gaps she might trip on. P2 decided that squares, rectangles, triangles and hexagons made the best tiles. Shapes with curved faces and pentagons left gaps.
It is nearly Halloween during this fortnight, so why not use these phonemes to help you write a descriptive poem or piece of writing. When, where and what as questions in a spooky story – “Where are you?” said the witch. Bang Bang rattled the door.
We have been practising – “am” words e.g. ram, Sam, jam etc and making up silly “am” stories. Next week it will be “it” words, so you make up a silly story to share with us. How about using – hit, fit, lit, sit, etc?
A new reading book will be given each Friday. The days for reading are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, so please make sure that pupils have their reading books in their bags each day.
Can you find any words with our phonemes in them?
What is happening at the beginning, middle and end of the story? Tell someone the most important things that happen.
Number
We have been practising our number bonds to 10 (10 + 0 = 10, 5 + 5 = 10 etc) and will be extending our additions up to 20, this will include adding doubles (e.g. 2 + 2 ). We will use different materials- cubes, number lines, etc and will be using ten frames to help visualise the numbers.
Totals- Give your child a total within 20 e.g. 6, 9, 17(that is appropriate to their confidence with number). Ask them to draw pictures to show ways of combining groups of objects to make that total.
Doubles -Explore the pattern when adding doubles 0+0, 1+1, 2+2 etc. This links well to –
Investigating – dice/domino patterns. Show a number and ask the child to describe the pattern. This can help children learn to combine and partition numbers in the range 1-10 without counting by ones. Play dominoes and roll dice to practise adding skills.
