Happy Hanukkah!

*********************************************************************

Mrs Macleod has organised a class trip to the town centre to buy provisions for our class party.  This links into the work she and the class are doing with money.  If the weather is good enough, we hope to walk up to the town centre tomorrow afternoon.  Please make sure you wear a warm/waterproof jacket and hats, scarves and gloves.  Remember to wear sensible boots or shoes.

**********************************************************************

This week Hanukkah is celebrated by Jewish people all around the world.  Today we completed our menorahs and made Stars of David – 2 symbols of the Jewish faith.  We also tasted donuts which are traditionally eaten to celebrate Hanukkah.  Of course we still had to fit in language work and our Nativity practice!  It’s been a busy day!

Proposed walk on Tuesday afternoon.

Just to give everyone a little notice. Weather permitting, we are hoping to take P2 up to the town centre on Tuesday afternoon (8th December) to buy some goods for our Christmas party. Please make sure that your child is warmly and suitably dressed with appropriate footwear for walking to and from the town centre. Many thanks.

Friday is fantastic!

Here we are again at the end of another week- the time is flying by!

In in number we have been using resources to help with our subtraction. We have to remember to jump when we add and subtract! Some class members were keen to help others too and share any tips for calculating.

image

In the ICT suite we were creating the front covers for our Sound book. We used Word and practised inserting Wordart and pictures to make interesting covers. Just wait until you see our finished books- they will look excellent! Have a lovely weekend everyone, see you next week.

A warm fuzzy feeling day

image

It has been a great day in P2! There have been lots of achievements throughout the day, so we’ll done to everyone- I am very proud of you all.

This afternoon we explored  the ” new look” Learning Zone and had great fun with the new resources.  The photo at the top shows the new bricks in the construction area- there is even a hod to carry them!

image

In the shop we were practising using coins to make the correct totals.

image

In the house we have cleaning products so that we can role play realistically. We had great fun in the larger space.

image

We set the table and poured our own breakfasts.

In the library area we have comfy seats and new books to read.

image

There are are great rollers with different patterns to use in the sand.

We have our creative table which changes depending on the season and particular festivals or celebrations. Today we were colouring in andcutting out figures from the  Nativity Story.

image

Ask your child what they discovered today.

Sounds all around

Our latest sound experiment involved glass bottles all the same size. We filled them with different amounts of water and tapped the bottles with a beater.

image

image

We put put the bottles in order by listening to the pitch of each sound. When there was more water the pitch was lower and the pitch was higher with less water. Why not try the experiment at home?

Just a reminder that any Christmas cards can be posted in the Christmas   Post Box and P3 will distribute to the correct classes. The full name and class should be written on each envelope. If you are not sure, we can help the children write the correct class for their friends. One card to the whole class is a good idea as it saves lots of writing!!

Tuesday 1.12.15

We have been practising for our Nativity show and I’ve got to admit we sound fantastic!  I’m sure you will all enjoy the show.  P2 will have grey tshirts and headgear provided by the school.  They will wear their school trousers or skirts during the performance.  Please make sure your child has indoor shoes to wear so they don’t have to go up on stage in their wellies!

Today we started finding out about why Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah at this time of year.  We started to design Hanukkah Menorahs.

Homework 30.11.15 – 14.12.15

Language

Phonemes

We have been starting to make up the phoneme families – the sounds are the same, but the spellings are different as in a – e, ay and ai all sounding like A.

Homework ideas:

  • Create short rhymes using words from the A sound family:
  • Experiment with words and sounds.

I can play in the rain, I use a tray on the train, I can see waves from the plane.

  • Write phoneme words in different colours and different shapes.
  • Look for the phoneme in your reading books and any other texts – comics, recipes, instructions etc. and print in the environment; signs in shops, street signs, etc.
  • Try these games to reinforce spelling/phoneme patterns
  • http://www.spellzone.com/games/

Common words:

Keep practising previous words and add in your new ones;

you    they    all    are    my    her

two    three   four    five    six    number

This is a great site for recognising sight and spelling words.

Onset and rime

We are continuing to practise the onset and rime revised and introduced so far this year:   at   an   ap   am   it   in   ab

Reading

A new reading book will usually be given each Friday. The days for reading are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, so please make sure that pupils have their reading books in their bags so that they can complete reading activities.

  • Look at the main events in your story. How does the story begin? What is the problem or the main event? How does the story end?
  • Use your own words to tell someone what your story is about.
  • Try this site:
  • http://www.crickweb.co.uk/ks2literacy.html   Story Sequencer

It is the story of the Three Little Pigs with a sequencing activity, then a storyboard section for children to write the events in their own words.

Continue to look for interesting facts and information around the house.

  • Stick a flyer into your jotter and tell us the most important information.

Number

In class we have been learning about the costs of items and comparing values of goods and services.

  • Talk with your child about their perceptions of prices
  • e.g. Is a loaf of bread dearer than a kettle? Use language such as more than/less than/ dearer/cheaper so that the child becomes used to words associated with using money.
  • Continue to make up amounts of money using the smallest and other amounts of coins, e.g. 14p = 10p + 2p + 2p

or 14p = 1p+1p+1p+1p+1p+1p+1p+1p+1p+1p+1p+1p+1p+1p

We will be learning about how to calculate change this fortnight. This links to our work on subtraction and reinforces which coins we use to receive change. If I buy something for 7p and give 10p, how much change will I get? I will get 3p which is 2p and 1p.

Interdisciplinary Learning

We are continuing our experiments with sound.

As a presentation activity, all the pupils will show their musical instrument models to the rest of the class. They will explain their reasons for choosing their instrument, how the model was made and any problems they had to solve.

The presentations will probably be held on 10th and 11th December in class

Remember to tell us about any games you have played on the computer or any other ways that you have been developing your skills for homework.

St Andrew’s Day 2015

Throughout the school, pupils did activities to celebrate St Andrews Day.  In P2, we learned about St Andrew and had a class quiz.  In the afternoon we learned some Scots words and even sang “Heid, Shooders, Knees and Taes”.   Miss Ferguson treated us to some Irn Bru and shortbread too.  Can you say the body parts in Scots from the next few pictures?

jeudi 25 novembre

This morning P2 were introduced to the date in French. As you can see there are no capital letters for the days of the week or the months of the year. We will continue to practise the dates in French to develop our skills.

image

One of our language activities was to make words before the timer stopped. We are definitely getting quicker at spelling our words.

image

This is afternoon we helped to put together Snowman Soup for the Christmas Fayre. The bag contains a drinking chocolate sachet, a candy cane, some marshmallows, and chocolate stars. They look lovely, so we’ll done P2 and we hope that they sell like hot cakes….hot soup!!

What busy bees!!

We have been very busy today applying our skills across different areas.image

We had to use our adding skills to find out how much money was in each purse.

image

We coloured the coins the correct colours to help us work out the values before we added together.

This afternoon we were learning about the pitch off a sound and experimented with a pretend drum.

image

When the plastic was pulled tighter, the drum made a higher pitched sound. When the plastic was slacker, the pitch was lower.

image

Please experiment at home with junk materials. Watch the elastic bands vibrate. If there are any parents, aunties, uncles etc who play instruments, then please show the children how you tune your instruments and show them the strings and skins vibrating. Thanks.
