Literacy

This week’s sound is ‘ay’. How many ‘ay’ words can you think of? Can you find any in a book? Make a list and add to it each time you find another ‘ay’ word. Reading -We will be working on summarising a text and focusing on what happens at the beginning, middle and end of the story. Talk to your child about the events in their reading book, picking out the main parts. Read a favourite bedtime story. Discuss what happens at the beginning, middle and end and draw a picture of each part.

Spelling

This week’s words are ‘get, big, him, his’

Use the 5 rules of spelling (Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check) and write your words in rainbow colours.

Maths

We will be working on the adding stories of 7, 8, 9 and 10. Use items around the house to help you (pencils, sweets, pasta etc). How many different ways can you split each number? Draw and write the sum eg.   9 + 0 = 9

8 + 1 = 9

7 + 2 = 9 etc

Practise saying the stories out loud. Get an adult to ask mental sums.

Complete the worksheet and stick it in your jotter.

Health/Topic

We will be finding out what happens to the food that we eat and how it passes through our digestive system. Keep a food diary for a week and talk about the healthy foods you are eating and whether you are eating a balanced and healthy diet. Stick the food diary in your jotter.

This weeks sound is ‘ai’. Complete the sheet, stick it in your jotter and write as many ‘ai’ words in a list in your jotter as you can. Practise reading them out loud every night.

The spelling words we will be covering are;

dad, had, back, and.

Use the 5 rules of spelling – ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write Check’. Write each word in small and then capital letters in your jotter.

Reading – practise each night. Discuss the events and characters in your new book and try to use your reading clues to work out hard words.

Use items around the house to help you (pencils, sweets, pasta etc). How many different ways can you split each number? Draw and write the sum eg. 6 + 0 = 6

4 + 2 = 6 etc

Practise saying the stories out loud. Get an adult to ask mental sums.

Health

We have been learning about different food groups – energy foods (bread, rice, pasta, cereals etc), protein foods (meat, fish, eggs, nuts etc), dairy foods (milk, cheese, yogurt etc) and fruit and vegetables. Talk to your child about one of their meals. What food groups can they identify? Do they have some foods from all groups in their meals? Draw a picture of a meal they have eaten showing some foods each group.

This weeks sound is ‘wh’. Complete the sheet, stick it in your jotter and write as many ‘wh’ words in a list in your jotter as you can. Practise reading them out loud every night.

The spelling words we will be covering are;

of, off, on, can.

Write each word on a partner’s back then swap places – they write on yours.

Reading – practise each night. Discuss the events and characters in your new book and try to use your reading clues to work out hard words.

Literacy

This week we will be learning the ‘ee’ and ‘oo’ sounds. Complete the sound sheet and write a list of ‘ee’and ‘oo’ words in your homework jotter. Practise reading each list out loud every night to improve fluency and aid quick recognition.

Read and discuss your reading book every night.

Maths

Can you count up in 2’s? Write some number patterns in your jotter eg. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 etc or 3, 5, 7, 9, etc. Try some going down in 2’s eg. 10, 8, 6, 4, etc. or 11, 9, 7, 5 etc. Can you continue numbers up to 30 or even bigger! How far can you go?

We have been working a lot on maths vocabulary and understanding what each word is telling you to do. Words that mean ‘add’ include ‘more than’, ‘altogether’, ‘count on’ and ‘after’. Words that mean ‘take away’ include ‘less than’, ‘count back’, ‘subtract’ and ‘before’. Complete some oral examples eg. ‘What is 2 less than 10?’ or ‘ What is 4 and 5 altogether?’. Keep answers no bigger than 10.

Topic

We are learning about ourselves and our bodies and how we can do lots of different things. Talk about all the things you do around the house (tidy your bedroom, set the table etc). Draw pictures of how you help in your jotter and write about what you are doing under your picture.

Homework for w/b 5.9.16

Literacy

We will be working on looking for clues to help your child read difficult words. Some of the strategies will be

  • sound the word out

  • look for a word hiding in a bigger word

  • look for a phoneme (sound) you know eg. sh, ch, th etc

See if your child can find any of these clues while they are reading their reading book and ask them to explain it to you

This week’s sounds will be ‘th’ and ‘ck’. The worksheet should be completed and stuck into their jotter if possible.

Numeracy

We will be working on sequences of numbers up to 20 and beyond. Give your child a number eg 10. Can they continue the sequence and give the next 3 numbers? (11, 12, 13). Can they give you the 3 numbers before (9, 8, 7) counting down? Do lots of examples. If confident extend the numbers higher.

HWB

We will be working on our fitness and encouraging the children to lead a healthier lifestyle by doing regular exercise every day. Play outdoor games, go a bike ride, go swimming etc. Take some pictures of the activities you are doing and bring them in to share with the class.
