We have been in the Learning Zone learning all about shapes that are good for tiling in our maths work.  We found out that squares, rectangles and triangles are good for tiling because they do not leave any spaces.  We also found out that circles are not good for tiling because they leave spaces.

    Topic

    Our theme is Scotland and I would like the children to find out about one aspect of Scotland as part of a personal project and then present it to the class. They could research anything of interest to them (Scottish food and drink, the Loch Ness Monster, their family clan and tartan, a famous Scottish person etc). They will be given some paper and a poly pocket to keep their project in (you may wish to put it into a ring binder or folder too). They should design a front cover and have information and drawings using both computer and hand written/drawn work. The project should be returned by Monday 30th January and the children will get to present it to the class shortly after this.

Happy new year and welcome back after the Christmas break.  Here is the homework for this week;

Literacy

This week’s sound is ‘oa’ (boat, soap, road etc). Here are some activities to do as homework.

Sounds

  • Write a silly story using as many ‘oa’ words as you can – remember capitals and full stops.

  • Try playing these games; http://www.galacticphonics.com/longvowels/oa/interactive/oaspell/oaspellt.htm

    http://www.galacticphonics.com/longvowels/oa/interactive/oamissing.htm

  • Practise reading the list of ‘oa’ words every night and time yourself. Stick the sheet in your jotter.

Spelling

The spelling words for this week are;

he, she, we

Use the 5 rules of spelling (Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check) and write each word 3 times in rainbow writing.

Write a sentence using each word.

Maths

We will be learning more about money up to 15p. Use real coins and see how many ways you can make up different amounts eg. 14p – 10p, 1p, 1p, 1p, 1p

            – 10p, 2p, 1p, 1p

            – 10p, 2p, 2p,

            – 5p, 5p, 2p, 2p etc

Try this for different amounts up to 15p.

Set up a pretend shop using items around the house and price the items between 1p and 9p. Use a 10p coin and pretend to ‘buy’ something. How much change would you get back from 10p? Use the ‘counting on’ method to work out the change eg the item costs 8p, so 8p + ?= 10p so the change is 2p. Do this for all prices within 10p.
