For the next fortnight, I would like you to select one activity from each of the following sections: Numeracy, Working with others and Expressive Arts

You can create your work in any format and you will present your work to the class at a special Victorian Information session.

As an extension of the bi-lingual dictionary work you have been doing in class, you have activities which will give extra practice in identifying masculine and feminine words and making sure that the word endings are spelt correctly. These sites show the gender of the words.

Parent Open Morning

Parents are invited to visit their child’s class on Friday 2nd February between 9.15 and 10.15 to join them in their learning. This is a great opportunity for you to be a part of your child’s learning and to experience school in 2018.

One of our reading groups was summarising this morning. They collated notes about badger-baiting from the text and used these to write their own summary about the subject.

These are some of our ideas about multiplication. We will be extending our skills and practising our times tables using the Victorian schools method as well as more fun activities.

This afternoon we travelled back to visit a house in Victorian London! Why not try the journey at home to see whether you discover any new characters!

Go into your search engine and put in top marks Victorian rich and poor- and you should find Walk through a Victorian house.

Today we were using the bi-lingual dictionaries to find animal words in French . Our next step will be to translate from French to English!

We have been working hard to improve our skills in ICT. We have been producing a PowerPoint presentation where the slides include interesting transitions and sounds. Some of the class have presented their work and there has been some very interesting information shared about school life in Victorian times.

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to be a teacher first thing in the morning during registration? One lucky pupil got the opportunity to carry out the routines for registration, the lunches and the date in French ( with assistance from the class teacher when necessary)!  There are several other children waiting for the experience and with this enthusiasm, the future of teaching recruitment is safe.

During our reading lesson we were finding evidence from the text and making judgements about characters from what was written, or the impression that was given, to write detailed character profiles.

This morning “Robert Burns” visited our class to ensure that we were presenting one of his poems in our best joined handwriting- luckily he was happy with our efforts!

A small group of children from P4 gave us a flavour of what to expect at their assembly by singing and reciting some of Burns’ most famous works. We are looking forward to seeing the whole assembly tomorrow!

This afternoon we were shown some photos and artefacts from the New Lanark heritage site. The place is very interesting and as P6  are learning about the Victorians, it would be a great place to visit and experience what life was like in the nineteenth century.

How do you explain the formal method for subtraction? We all thought of the different steps and realised that you have to be very clear with your method!

In P.E. we were extending our  use of equipment to the use  of a badminton racquet and shuttlecock. In pairs we were throwing returning and catching the shuttlecock. At the end of the lesson we could explain what we were doing well or had improved on and also suggest our next steps to develop the skills further.

Language

To continue our Victorian themed learning and linked to our work on non-fiction text features, this week you are going to produce a “Victorian Words Glossary”. The list will be written in alphabetical order with the meaning of each word written beside it neatly in your jotter, or the work could be typed out in a suitable font and used as part of our Victorians display!

The words are: scullery, governess, census, abacus, mangle, poverty, soot, apothecary.

 Reading – ongoing

Reading is not just a fiction text completed in school, it is ongoing and there are lots of opportunities for reading outside school. Find an interesting fact or facts from a non-fiction source about an aspect of the Victorian Era that you are interested in and present it in your jotter (think of non-fiction features such as: maps, charts, tables, text boxes etc, to make your information as engaging for the reader as possible!).

Today we have worked hard on our Victorian inventions  topic. We finished our posters and then presented our information to the class.

After careful consideration, Joseph Lister’s work on anaesthetics was voted the most important Victorian discovery.

At the end of the afternoon, we all enjoyed some “Snowtime”, having fun with other classes and learning about our variable weather!
