This afternoon P6 attended a workshop led by SPCA officers. ย Some children went to a workshop about wild animals and played a game to increase their knowledge of wildlife in Scotland. ย Others ย attended a workshop on pet patrol that focused on pet ownership then played a game about making the right decision about an animal’s care and rehoming.

With only 56 days to Christmas, Mrs Rutherford and Mr Kieran had their first choir practice for our Christmas Show. ย This year the choir will be singing up in the town centre.

Homework W/B 30th October 2017

Numeracy

Iโ€™ve uploaded new activities on everyoneโ€™s Active Learn Account.ย  The activities focus onย  negative numbers.

Literacy

Each child has copied their spelling words into their homework jotter or on a piece of paper if they didnโ€™t bring their jotters to school.ย  Pick at least 6 words from their list and put the word into an interesting sentence, underlining with a ruler the spelling word.ย  Everyone should have at least 6 sentences.

In Literacy this week, we are revising how to punctuate direct speech.ย  Copy these sentences neatly into your jotter, remember put in โ€œ around the first word spoken and โ€ around the last word spoken.ย  If you need to, highlight the words spoken first.

  1. ย  I just want to mess about with Stig said Barney.
  2. All right then. Put your boots on. Said Granny.
  3. Good morning, Stig. Do you remember me Barney asked Stig
  4. Granny have you got anything you donโ€™t want asked Barney.
  5. I mean things like windows and chimneys explained Barney.

Other- The Life and Times of Guy Fawkes

ย Research the life and times of Guy Fawkes.

Cut these out and put them or write them into your jotter in the right order โ€“ then draw pictures to match the writing.

Big Writing

This morning we continued our Big Writing Work. ย We had to use VCOP to write a letter. ย Our letters were written in the style of Harry Potter and were responding to a letter written by Harriet.

Activities Afternoon

This afternoon we were very busy working on different activities. ย We had Halloween Art, l’halloween French, Bronze Section of our Clyde Football booklet and Sum Dog. No wonder we were tired tonight! Enjoy the Halloween Disco if you’re going!

Our Visit to the Luggie Nature Reserve

This afternoon we made it safely over to the Luggie Nature Reserve. We used our maps to identify the different features, identified some plants and wildlife then had a chance to explore the area with our partners. ย Some of us even got to explore in the river.

We also got to see the improvements being made to the footpath from the funding Scottish Wildlife Trust received from Viridor Credits.

ย We were all really surprised to discover an amazing wild place so close to our school. ย The outdoors is a reallly top place to learn. ย Look at our photos to see how much we thought we learned!

Visit to the Luggie Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Wednesday 25th October, we will be heading over to The Luggie for our outdoor learning. The weather doesn’t look too bad but please remember to bring a coat, wellies or old shoes/boots. I think the footpaths will be muddy. ย  Also remember to bring your PE Kit back as we’ve got football coaching with Clyde FC .

Homework W/B 23rd October

Numeracy

This week in maths we are looking at negative numbers.ย  We:

  • Located numbers with a value of less than zero on a number line
  • Sequenced positive and negative numbers
  • Solved simple problems in context, with reference to the number line e.g. it was -10ยฐC and it got 3ยฐC colder/warmer

Choose either exercise A or B or C:

Section A
1. Put these temperatures in order, the lowest first.
a) 2ยฐC, -8ยฐC, -1ยฐC, -6ยฐC, -4ยฐC
b) 6ยฐC, 10ยฐC, -15ยฐC, -11ยฐC, 14ยฐC
c) 16ยฐC, 18ยฐC, -23ยฐC, -25ยฐC, -13ยฐC, 12ยฐC, 20ยฐC
d) Which of these temperatures is lowest?
i) -4ยฐC or -2ยฐC
ii) -8ยฐC or 8ยฐC
iii) -16ยฐC or -17ยฐC
iv) -5ยฐC or -6ยฐC

Section B
1. The temperature rises by 15 degrees from -4ยฐC. What is the new
temperature?
2. The temperature falls from 11ยฐC to -2ยฐC. How many degrees does the
temperature fall?
3. The temperature is 6ยฐC. It falls by 8 degrees. What is the temperature now?
4. The temperature is -3ยฐC. How much must is rise to reach 5ยฐC?
5. What is the difference in temperature between -4ยฐC and 14ยฐC?

Section C
1. The temperature was -5ยฐC. It falls by 6 degrees. What is the temperature
now?
2. The temperature is -11ยฐC. It rises by 2 degrees. What is the temperature
now?
3. The temperature is -20ยฐC. How much must it rise to reach -5ยฐC?
4. Draw a line graph to show these temperatures at 9.00 a.m. each day for 2
weeks.
-2ยฐC, 3ยฐC, -1ยฐC, 1ยฐC, 4ยฐC, 2ยฐC, -1ยฐC, 2ยฐC, 5ยฐC, 4ยฐC, 1ยฐC, -3ยฐC, -5ยฐC, 0ยฐC

Everyone to do:

  1. Temperature chain puzzles Ask your child to make a puzzle by writing a chain of temperature changes, e.g. It was 7ยฐC and then it reached 10ยฐC. The temperature then rose by 5ยฐ before dropping a further 8ยฐ. What is the temperature now? He/she gives the initial temperature and makes sure he/she knows the final temperature in each puzzle.
  2. Website 1 – http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/maths/number/negative_numbers/play/ A highly enjoyable game focusing on the sequencing of positive and negative numbers.

Website 2 – http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/online/negnumorder.swf Put the negative numbered wooly hats in the right order.

Earthquakes ๐ŸŒ

Today we continued our work on earthquakes. We can explain what causes earthquakes and how they are measured. ย We also learned what to do in an earthquake.

Remember tomorrow is ECODAY. ย Make sure you come dressed for the weather as you’ll be working outside, at times. ย  You need to wear school jumper/shirt but can wear your own bottoms.
