Literacy:

Using its and itโ€™s

When do we use its? Its is a possessive adjective. Use its if you can change it for a noun + โ€™s.

E.g.ย  ย ย ย The cat drank its milk.

The cat drank the catโ€™s milk.

What about itโ€™s? This is the shortened form of it is. Use itโ€™s if you can change it for it is or ย it has.

E.g. ย ย ย  Itโ€™s very cold today!

It is very cold today!

Oh dear! The person who wrote these sentences didnโ€™t know whether to use its ย or itโ€™s!ย  Copy these sentences into your book, using the correct word.

  1. My dad says its very cold in Canada today.
  2. The dog ran away because its collar came loose.
  3. The robber broke into the car and stole its
  4. Hurry up, its nearly time for school!

Evacuee Letters

This morning we used our plans from yesterday and wrote a letter as an evacuee. ย We consider the layout carefully , ย how to punctuate the address and how to conclude with an appropriate ending. ย Our next steps will be redraft our letters and write them on “old” paper we made from teabags.

Remember to bring in 50p tomorrowย if you want to buy a Fair Tradeย Pancake!!!
