Calderbank Primary Animation Club

Background

Calderbank Primary is a small school with a  roll of 53 children. We decided to offer this as an after school club to enable the children to become familiar with the software, ‘I can Animate’  and encourage the children to work together. Children from P1-7 were encouraged to join our after school club and it proved such a success it is still running !

How ICT supported learning and teaching

We have found this software highly motivating and easy to use by children from P1 to P7. The club has been running in 6 week blocks to enable different groups of children to get involved. They were given a range of small toys, lego and play dough to use with  the software, ‘I Can Animate’ to create our own short stop animations. They worked in friendship groups and were given the opportunity to experiment with the resources and come up with their own story lines. We then put them together into short films using iMovie. We also had a go at using the iPad app too, which is a cheaper alternative if you have invested in iPads.

You can view our film by visiting our school blog-  https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/nl/CalderbankPrimarySchoolBlog/

Conclusion/Impact

The children involved are now skilled in the use of the software and teachers are now looking for opportunities to make use of this resource in other areas of the curriculum.

In the areas of Health & Wellbeing/RME the P6&7 children have produced animations to represent the UN Rights of the Child, illustrating the right to education and the right to play.

Sacred Heart Primary I Can Animate

The school’s ICT Committee requested the ‘I Can Animate’ software to enrich the learning experience of pupils.  ‘I can create, capture and manipulate sounds, text and images to communicate experiences, ideas and information in creative and engaging ways.’ TCH 1-04a

We used the equipment with a group of P4 pupils. They used a range of resources to make a creative animation. The committee intended to timetable the equipment for use from P4-P7 but staff and pupil feedback informed us that training may be required for staff or workshops with specialist staff and pupils prior to rolling out the equipment to classes.

“The potential of I Can Animate to bring learning to life in a creative and collaborative way was great but I would like training on the technical aspects of using the software and examples of how it has been used effectively in class.”P2/3 teacher

“I enjoyed using the laptop and camera and making a movie.” P4 pupil

Sacred Heart Primary Nintendo Dsis

The Nintendo DSis were initially requested by our school ICT Committee, which is a group of about 50 pupils from P1 to P7 which meets once a month. One of the aims of the ICT Committee is to increase the use and variety of ICT to support learning and pupils felt that using the equipment could help them to improve their learning, particularly their mental maths agility. The ICT committee trained each other and staff on how to use the nintendo DSis and discussed ways that they could be used in class. The equipment was then timetabled for each class in the school. These are just a couple of examples of how the DSis were used to engage learners and enhance the teaching and learning experience.

Primary 1 used the DSis to practise their addition facts to 10.

Primary 6 and 7 worked collaboratively and used the DSis to improve their spelling skills.

‘We scrambled words and wrote a message to our partner on pictochat. Our partner unscrambled the word and sent it back.’ P6/7 pupil

To gauge the response of staff and pupils to the use of the Nintendo DSis and their  impact on teaching and learning the staff responsible for the ICT Committee issued evaluations. All evaluations were very positive and all staff commented on the positive impact using the equipment had on the learning experience and stated that it was a powerful tool in engaging all pupils actively in their learning. For example, “I used it during maths. It was good for quick practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. My support group enjoyed it and they were able to answer questions mentally which they wouldn’t normally answer orally.”P5 teacher.

“I liked braintraining because it is a fun way to learn lots of different things in different ways.” P4 pupil

IPOD touches in Balmalloch Primary School

P2 using the BeeBot App.

As ICT Co-ordinator, I was keen for the IPOD’s to enhance teaching and learning across the school. The IPOD touches were very motivational and it was a very easy way for  infants to use technology. I found them very useful as cameras and video cameras for the children to very easily photograph and record their work in all areas of the curriculum. We also used the IPOD’s to take photographs of whole school events, which I then uploaded to our school Podcast Server.

Primary 2 used the IPOD’s to photograph and record their work in problem solving. Primary 5 recorded themselves reading aloud and used the recordings to peer and self assess their reading. Primary 2 used the ‘BeeBot’ App on the IPOD touches to help them locate and describe position in maths. Primary 2 also enjoyed reading the stories on the ‘Tell Me Stories’ App.

Primary 3 and 4 used ‘Eggs to Order’, ‘Maths Tour’ and ‘PopMath’ Apps to help consolidate their number bonds. The different levels on each App allowed the more able to challenge themselves in maths. Primary 5/6 used the Maths Apps on the IPOD’s to reinforce multiplication and division facts.

Primary 6 used  Safari on the IPOD’s to research their RME presentations.

IPOD’s in Balmalloch Primary have been such a success that we are purchasing our own set. The children are delighted!

Airliner Slate – Eastfield Primary School

Background

I decided to borrow the Airliner as I do not have a Smartboard in my class and the I.C.T. room in the school can become crowded with a full class lesson.  Therefore I wanted to see if I could solve the space issues with the wireless capabilities of the Airliner.

How ICT supported learning and teaching

Basically I used the Airliner to allow pupils to interact more during lessons and presentations.  Instead of moving through the crowd to come out to click on the screen etc, the pupils just passsed round the slate which solved classroom management issues.

Impact / conclusion

The pupils enjoyed the fact that they had more interaction with the Smartboard instead of just wathcing and listening.  They also liked the novelty factor or everyone watching their movements on the ‘big screen’.  During class presentations of their topic research, some the pupils also decided to use the Airliner instead of just standing out the front clicking on the laptop to move on a slide.  This gave the pupils more of an opportunity to move around the classroom, pose questions to the audience and take answers.

Flip Cameras Mossend PS

Primary 6/7 borrowed the Flip cameras to use during their topic about Bellshill and Mossend. The children researched the local area and then decided what information and locations they wanted to film. They worked in groups and had some really interesting ideas. John Johnston then came to the school and worked with the class showing them how to edit their footage. The films turned out really well and the children are so proud of them.
