Careers Week

Today we had a visit from Bells Bakery to share with us the jobs and work that they have available. We learned about the history of the company, the career paths available within the bakery and the work entailed in each area. We had lots of questions to ask and really enjoyed finding out about the factory. We even got some Kirriemuir gingerbread to take home to try!

Career week

On Tuesday we had some more visitors to our class to share their careers with us. We had Anne, who is a midwife and Sarah, who  spoke to us about the different careers she had had.

Anne shared some of the instruments she uses in her job on a daily basis, we guessed what each piece of equipment was used for and were quite close with a few of our answers. She also told us why she enjoys her job and what qualifications and experience was needed to succeed in her field.

Sarah spoke with us about her different careers she had experienced. She had started out as a horse rider/jockey but due to an accident had to leave that career. Sarah then described how she went into another field, realised it wasn’t for her and moved to another area of work. Sarah helped us realise that sometimes things don’t always go to plan, we might need to have a back up plan or change unexpectedly and also that it is ok to change careers if you are not able/happy.

We are really enjoying these talks.

Goodbye butterflies!

This morning, we said goodbye to our beautiful butterflies as it was time to set them free. Everyone got a chance to hold one before they flew off into the fresh air.

Goodbye butterflies. We will miss you all!

Visitors from Overtown

Pupils from Primary 1-3 from Overtown came to join us for a morning last week.  They joined up with Castlehill pupils from the same stage and Mrs Bowden took the Primary 2 pupils in her classroom.

They enjoyed some “getting to know you” games before working on some butterfly themed activities.  The pupils all enjoyed seeing the real live butterflies which we have been hatching in class.

The highlight of our afternoon, was the butterfly science experiment, where we made the tissue paper wings of our craft butterflies “fly” using the static energy generated by rubbing a balloon on our jumpers.

We have chicks!

When we arrived at Nursery this morning we noticed that some of the eggs had holes in their shells. There was great excitement as we watched a little beak poking though and we could hear tiny cheeps! 2 of the eggs hatched during the morning on their own but one needed a little help from Claire. We quickly prepared the cage with straw water, food and the heat pad. But we can’t put them in yet as their feathers are too wet and they need to be dry before they go into their new home.
We had so many visitors this afternoon from all parts of the school wanting to see our 3 little chicks. we think there might be 2 more tomorrow! Can’t wait!

Look , it's coming out.

Look , it’s coming out.

Why can't they go into the cage? Why are they sleeping?

Why can’t they go into the cage? Why are they sleeping?

It's hatching! There is a baby chick!

He is nearly dry.

Lots of butterflies

All of our butterflies have now hatched and are fluttering around their habitat. We have provided some cut oranges and nectar in the form of a sugar syrup on some cotton wool.

Soon it will be time to set them free into the open air.

Career Week

What a start to the week! This morning saw the beginning of our Careers Week at Castlehill. Throughout the week we will discover the world of work, what some jobs entail and the education, qualifications and experiences required to achieve these jobs.

Primary 6 and Primary 7 were visited by Lianne and her colleagues to share their experiences of some emergency services and National Health Services. We enjoyed hearing about their careers and trying out some of their equipment and uniforms. We are looking forward to discovering more about the world of work as the week progresses.

Mmmmm, hotdogs!

This morning we made hotdogs. We put the hotdogs into a pot to heat them up on the hob and buttered our hotdog rolls. While we were waiting on the hotdogs, we had a taste test of some of the sauces Mrs Black brought to top our hotdogs. Our favourite was tomato ketchup, followed by BBQ sauce, however we are not fans of American mustard!

When we returned to class, we had to imagine we were going to be selling our hotdogs at a hotdog stall and create posters to advertise this and sell them.
