As part of this year’s World Book Day celebration, Mrs Leckie’s Book Group raised £75.20 to send to Book Aid International by having a Bake Sale. Book Aid International is a charity dedicated to increasing access to books and libraries in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Since 1954, the charity has sent more than 32 million books to libraries in the developing world. Each year, Book Aid International ships up to one million brand new books to libraries in Africa. The schools 2nd annual Sports Persons’ Night was on Friday night in the Cambusnethan Miners’ Club and yet again was an absolutely fantastic night with speakers Dick Campbell and John Gahagan going down a storm to the crowd of about 90 teachers, parents and friends. The estimated profit for the night was £1600 and will be confirmed later on today. The hidden team top prize of £100 was won by Katie MacLeod. Rowan Street will be closed for 5 days beginning Monday 29th February to allow off site works to mains utilities being installed into the road for the new Barratt Homes. For a further 3 weeks where works will happen then to one side of road and then cross over to the other side of the road. Pupils can still access the lane but then need to go round the Laburnum Crescent street. Barratt Homes apologise for any inconvenience caused over the next four weeks and are working safely and vigorously to have these works completed within our time span. Written by Mr McGilp.

Barratt Homes have just started to commence work on the above site and are temporarily using access from Rowan St to enter this. The main access however will be from Coltness Road and they are awaiting approval from North Lanarkshire Council to allow a 4 way traffic signalisation junction. They are refusing entry to delivery trucks to their site before the start of the school day, at lunch time and then again at the end of the school day. They have the safety of members of the public, in particular our school children, at the top of their list of priorities. They apologise for any inconvenience caused so far and they will monitor the situation on a daily basis as the site progresses.

The school Credit Union is now open. Deposits (minimum 50p) can be made every Tuesday lunchtime in the School Foyer near the buddy booths. Several 1st and 2nd Year pupils now have an account. If you would like to open one please ask Mr Gallagher or Mrs Bihet who will arrange the forms. Also, if any senior pupil would like to help out in the Credit Union please ask Mr Gallagher. Young Adult author, Kirkland Ciccone, visited Coltness High School on Friday 19th February to promote his third book, North of Porter, to third year pupils’. This was Kirkland’s third visit to the school and he was just as entertaining as his previous visits. Kirkland books are quirky Y A books and he says “my books appeal to the freaks, geeks, punks, skaters, weirdos and wacky folk, as well as their parents”. All Kirkland’s books are available from the school library.  

Today Coltness High welcomes School Leaders Scotland (SLS) which is the union for promoted members of staff in schools for it’s Spring Council Meeting. This meeting sees 40-50 HT, DHT and Business Managers from all 32 authorities across Scotland converging on Wishaw for the day.
