WATERSTONES TRIP

The school’s Read, Write, Inc. groups enjoyed a trip to Glasgow Fort on Friday 8th June. The pupils’ tremendous achievements in improving their reading were recognised by North Lanarkshire Council, who awarded each pupil a £15 voucher for Waterstones. The pupils experienced a workshop involving bookmark-making and enthusiastic advice on choosing their books. Following their time in Waterstones, the group enjoyed some relaxation in Costa Coffee. Costa were delighted to welcome our pupils and very kindly provided them with snacks and drinks to enjoy whilst they eagerly browsed through their new books. The pupils had a fantastic time and represented Braidhurst extremely well. Thanks to Waterstones and Costa for their generosity and hospitality.

MARTIN STEWART VISIT

On the morning of Friday, 15th June, we enjoyed a visit from author, Martin Stewart. As part of our drive to raise literacy levels in the Broad General Education phase of the school, we invited Martin to deliver sessions to our S3 pupils, which focussed on strategies to make their creative writing more powerful, as begin working towards achieving their National 5 qualification. S2 pupils were treated to a presentation from the author, where he inspired and enthused as he described his own personal journey of lifelong learning and developing skills for work. Our pupils were delighted to receive their very own copy of his book, “Riverkeep”, even waiting through interval to have them signed; a truly ringing endorsement of what a fantastic event this was!

Literacy Event

The school kicked off its Literacy celebrations, to mark International Literacy Day, on Friday 8th September, with a fantastic author visit from Alex Nye in the library.

S3 English were an excellent audience; listening intently to Alex as she talked of her books and career as a writer, and asking lots of questions, such as: “If you didn’t write ghost stories what genre would you write?”, or “What books inspired you as a young person?”, and “Do you have a fixed place where you write or can you write anywhere?”  Alex was very inspiring and pupils (and staff) thoroughly enjoyed her visit.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Mrs Anne-Marie Keatings celebrated her 60th birthday last Friday. Mrs Keatings has been a teacher of French and German for the past 14 years in Braidhurst, having formerly taught in Dalziel High School.

A surprise party was organised for her in the school Hub at lunchtime by her colleagues in the Modern Languages Department, and she was joined by many other members of staff from across the school.

Staff sang a birthday song composed especially to mark the occasion and then enjoyed some party food including, of course, a slice of her delicious birthday cake!

Mrs Keatings is a very popular and respected member of staff and everyone enjoyed making her special day so much fun!

LES OEUFS DE PAQUES

The Modern Languages Department held its annual Easter Egg competition and pupils were asked to decorate an egg on a European theme. The response was excellent and it was difficult to choose winners.

First prize was awarded to 1A pupils Safar, Aiden, John and Louis who produced a football pitch with eggs as players. Second prize went to Kaitlyn of 2R for a French guillotine complete with an egg for a head, and third prize was awarded to Shah of 2L for his ‘Arc de Triomphe’. Mrs Martin, the Science Technician also deserves a special mention for entering an array of unusual and impressive eggs, labelled in perfect French and German.

AUF WIEDERSEHEN ANJA!

The Modern Languages Department bade a sad farewell to their German assistant Miss Anja Woike last week. Anja had worked in the school for six months and during her time at Braidhurst, Anja was involved in a wide range of activities with the pupils and proved to be a very valuable and respected member of the department. She worked with National 4, National 5 and Higher German pupils, as well as assisting with the S2 German introductory sessions, PSE classes and Higher Geography students, as Anja studied Geography at university in Mainz in Germany. She now returns to Dusseldorf in Germany but she has assured the department that she will return to Scotland in the very near future, as she will miss the beautiful scenery and the Scottish hospitality. It goes without saying that members of the department intend visiting Anja in Germany too!
