DEVELOPING SCOTLAND’S YOUNG WORKFORCE

Braidhurst High School has successfully worked in partnership with the Prince’s Trust in the delivery of the S3/4 XL programme over the past 5 years.   S4/5 pupils are currently participating in Future Starts, a pilot initiative developed by Prince’s Trust in response to the Commission on Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce.   It is aimed at young people aged 15-18 to offer an insight into the world of work.   Over the past 5 weeks pupils have attended Industry Taster events to find out more about careers in construction, mechanics, sports and childcare.   Pictured (L to R) are Connor Bohan, Jack Simpson, David Barclay and Rhys Arthur attending the construction information day at New College Lanarkshire, Motherwell Campus.   The boys gained hands-on experience in the college’s extensive training facilities and gained invaluable careers advice on construction apprenticeships from Kier Construction and Amey.   The Future Starts group will now be offered the opportunity for a work experience week in May and June to explore their chosen career further.

Braidy Boys Make Cup Semi-Final

Scottish Cup Quarter-Final: Lochgelly HS vs Braidhurst HS

Braidhurst Under 14s travelled to Fife on Tuesday afternoon to play their Scottish Cup Quarter-Final match against Lochgelly HS. It was a massive game for both schools and the players were led on to the park by a piper. Once the game had begun the visitors controlled the opening period, making their possession count when Reece McAlear scored with a composed finish after great work from Adam Kettings. Moments before half-time, a quick-fire double from Alistair Small and Max McGuigan put Braidhurst in a commanding 3-0 lead. After the restart, a fine save from substitute goalkeeper Lewis McCallum prevented the hosts from coming back into the game. A long range strike from Adam put the game well beyond doubt and Braidhurst were to progress to the Semi-Finals as 4-0 winners. Mr Clarke and Mr O’Toole were delighted with the team’s achievement and they now face St. Andrews Secondary.

VIEL GLUCK TIM

The Modern Languages Department said a sad farewell to German Exchange Teacher Tim Senz last week.   Tim has been an assistant in the school since September of last year and is now travelling back to his home town of Mainz in Germany to complete his studies.   During his time in Braidhurst, he worked with National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher German classes, as well as being instrumental in helping develop resources for the Modern Languages For Life and Work class.   Activities he carried out with this class included making German biscuits called Platzchen, broadening their knowledge of German culture through Power Point presentations, helping them prepare Job Applications and CVs in German, as well as engaging in a number of ICT activities.   Tim also visited the PE Department and was an active participant in games of volleyball and in trampoline sessions.   Tim spent his free time exploring Scotland and was so impressed by the beautiful scenery and the hospitality of the people that he intends to return in the near future.   All pupils thoroughly enjoyed making his acquaintance.

LES OEUFS DE PAQUES

The Modern Languages Department held its annual Easter Egg competition and pupils were asked to decorate an egg.   The response was excellent and it was difficult to choose winners.   First prize was awarded to Sadie Rodger of class 5R with her entry of ‘Un jardin de Paques’, second prize was awarded to Shareen Duncanson of 4L with her ‘Mes Amis de Paques’, in third place was Ty Burton with ‘une gondole’, and in fourth place was Shah Afzahal with ‘Le Beau Lapin’.   Physics teacher Mr Zaf Hussain for his entry ‘Station spatiale’ and school janitor Mr Paul O’Hare for his entry of ‘Eggrig Larsson’, were both congratulated on their entries.  Joyeuses Paques a tout le monde!’

Braidhurst Under 13s

A five star performance from Braidhurst under 13s saw them defeat Cardinal Newman in their Lanarkshire Cup semi-final.   In a match they totally dominated, Robbie Brown fired the visitors in front after a scramble in the box from Cody McLeod’s corner.   They doubled their lead soon after when Babajide Adeeko fired past the goalkeeper at his near post, and Braidhurst were well on their way to victory as Aidan Hughes made it three on the stroke of half-time.   Robbie added his second of the game soon after the restart, before substitute Jonathon Kelly scored with a well-taken goal.   The boys were in buoyant mood and could have scored more but the game was to end 5-0, much to the delight of Mr Clarke and Mr O’Toole.  The Under 13s are now into the final where they will face either St Andrew’s & St Brides HS or Cathkin HS.

Braidhurst Under-14s

Braidhurst Under-14s travelled to Coatbridge on Tuesday evening to play their quarter final Lanarkshire Cup tie against St Andrew’s High School. After a very poor start to the game the hosts raced into a two goal lead, but Stuart McKinstry started the fightback scoring a great goal direct from a free kick. Alistair Small then fired home to put the visitors level, however a sloppy goal conceded minutes after put St Andrew’s back in front. On the stroke of half-time Rhys Mallinson crashed a shot off of the crossbar but Dean Watson was on hand to fire the rebound into the roof of the net, levelling the scores at 3-3. Soon after the restart Tommy Hunter produced a fantastic save to keep the scores level, tipping a goal bound strike onto the crossbar. Dean finally put Braidhurst into a well-deserved lead, with Alistair then further adding to their advantage. A tremendous 30-yard strike from Dean put the game well beyond doubt, with a late consolation from St Andrew’s not enough to stop the Under 14s from progressing to the semi-finals as 6-4 winners.
