BGE to National 5 Roadmaps

We are excited to share with you our new roadmaps, which clearly outline how the Broad General Education (BGE) phase aligns with and supports progression into the Senior Phase and National 3, 4
and 5 qualifications. These roadmaps are designed to provide clarity and reassurance about your child’s progress through the BGE in each subject area.

What is the BGE to National 5 Roadmap?

The roadmaps outline the skills, knowledge, and understanding gained at key stages throughout the BGE. They include an assessment calendar for each subject area, linked to some examples of assessment evidence. This should help you to understand how your child is progressing and the next steps required for them to improve.

How Progress is Structured in Each Curricular Area:
1. Levels of Achievement:
  • During BGE, your child progresses through CfE levels. These levels are aligned with the skills and concepts required for success at National 3, 4 and 5.
  • For example, in Mathematics, a student working at Level 4 in S3 will explore problem-solving skills similar to those in National 5 but at an appropriate depth for their stage of learning.
2. Curricular Pathways:
  • Each curricular area—Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Expressive Arts, Social Studies, Health and Wellbeing, and Technologies—has a specific pathway that builds foundational knowledge and skills.
  • For instance:
        • In Literacy (English): Developing advanced reading and writing skills during BGE directly supports essay writing and textual analysis in National 5.
        • In Science: Practical investigative skills and scientific understanding in BGE are directly linked to National 5 assignments and exams.
3. Interdisciplinary Learning:
  • Interdisciplinary projects in S1-S3 help your child develop critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving—skills assessed across all National 5 subjects.
4. Assessing Progress:
  • Regular assessments, classroom activities, and projects during the BGE will highlight your child’s strengths and areas for development, ensuring they are prepared for the demands of National 5.

Why is this Roadmap Important?

  • Clarity: It helps you and your child understand how each stage of learning prepares them for their Senior Phase from S4 to S6.
  • Support: It identifies areas where your child may need additional support or challenge and ensures timely interventions.
  • Reassurance: The roadmap ensures that the transition from BGE to the Senior Phase is a natural progression and not a sudden leap.

How You Can Support Your Child:

  1. Engage with Their Learning: Regularly discuss their progress in different curricular areas and celebrate achievements.
  2. Encourage Skills Development: Support activities like reading, problem-solving games, or hands-on experiments at home to reinforce school learning.
  3. Partner with Us: Stay in touch with teachers, attend parent-teacher evenings, and ask questions about your child’s progress.

We believe that this roadmap will give both you and your child a clear vision of their learning journey, helping them to thrive in the years ahead. If you have any questions or would like more details about the roadmap, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s Guidance Teacher or Year Head.
