Reach-out to award-winning online professional learning in science

Reach out

Following a procurement exercise by Education Scotland, this award-winning resource is available to all practitioners in state-funded schools in Scotland with Glow access until July 2017.

Just sign in via RM Unify to get started or click on the orange button at the top of the Reach-Out CPD homepage and sign in with your Glow account details!

Primary science isn’t just about nurturing the scientists of the future. It’s about ensuring every child develops a natural curiosity about the world around them and starts to think analytically about situations.

Teachers are key to creating this science-literate society. They can inspire children to think more scientifically. Teacher confidence has been proven to impact children’s outcomes in science, but, naturally, most primary school teachers don’t have a science background.

That’s why Twig World have developed Reach Out CPD – to give every primary school teacher the professional development, support and materials they need to teach science with confidence. And to make it fun!

Over 20 courses for teaching 5-11 year olds cover everything from plants to planets. Each one provides teachers with concise topic knowledge and a whole raft of resources to use in class, including captivating short videos, practical activities and experiments, whiteboard visuals and more.

Curiosity Project – STEM Resources available

Siemens

The Curiosity Project is a three-year engagement programme by Siemens, broadening existing investment to bring science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to life in the UK.

The UK is great at engineering but there is a problem; there aren’t enough young people studying STEM and becoming engineers.

The project is underpinned by an education programme providing free STEM-related resources that bring STEM education to life. Resources cover topics such as mars, landing, tilting turbines, hybrid buses, floating and workshops about STEM. Careers.

Girls into STEM survey

We want to hear from girls in secondary school – What would make you interested in STEM?

equateEquate Scotland is the national organisation working to increase the number of girls and women studying and working in STEM. As part of their work they are completing a national piece of research on what girls in secondary school want to see in STEM over the next 10 years and what would get them more interested in science, technologies etc.

Equate are hoping to get as many responses as possible from teachers, pupils, and other education providers to help inform future projects in schools and workplaces across Scotland. If you could spend a few minutes completing this survey, and share it with your networks, it would be appreciated.

Please find the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/STEM10years

Equate Scotland would really appreciate it if you could send this round to girls in S1- S6 to complete. Their responses will be anonymous and will be included in the final report launched at the Scottish Parliament later this year.

To find out more about the work of Equate Scotland see their website at http://www.equatescotland.org.uk/

Twigworld available to all Glow users for a further year

Tigtag and Twig online resources are currently accessible via the Glow login and are used by schools across Scotland.  These award-winning resources provide high-quality videos and accompanying learning materials for sciences, mathematics and social studies. They were procured by Education Scotland in July 2015.  The contract was for one year initially with the possibility of a one year extension.

Education Scotland and Twig World have agreed to this one year extension which means that both Twig and Tigtag, and also TigTag Junior and Reach Out CPD, will continue to be available to state schools through Glow until 31st July  2017.

It will not be possible for Education Scotland to extend the contract further beyond this date.

Scotland Excel, the local authority procurement organisation, will include Education Software and Digital Content as an additional lot within their re-tender of their Education Materials framework with a start date of 1st April 2017.  It will therefore be for local authorities to purchase digital content via this route in the future.
