SLF 2018 is taking place this week and we cannot wait for our STEM Live Expo! –  a fantastic new, interactive experience with STEM demonstrations and inspirational keynote speeches.

Please  note: the sessions below may be marked as ‘full’ when you register but stand-by places are usually available – just stand outside the relevant room on the day to make use of the free spaces!

Hosted by award-winning science communicator, Dr Heather Reid, the action starts at 09.30 on Thursday 20th September in the Lomond Auditorium, and the programme is as follows:

09.30 – 10.15:             ‘Making Scotland a STEM Nation’

Hear the Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science, Mr Richard Lochhead MSP, set out the Scottish Government’s vision for STEM and the ambitious plans in the national STEM Education and Training Strategy published last year.

You’ll also hear from three inspiring young people who’ll share their STEM experiences with you.

10.45 – 11.30:             STEM Expo – Part One

Get STEM-inspired! Take part in our wide range of STEM demonstration sessions; hosted and delivered by children, young people, practitioners and experts from across Scotland. In a first for this festival, these sessions are packed full of practical ideas to inspire and motivate STEM learning across early years, primary, secondary and community learning settings.

12.00 – 12.45:             ‘Improving engagement with STEM: A science capital approach’

How do we improve, increase and widen engagement with STEM – particularly once learners leave formal education? Join Professor Louise Archer from University College London to hear more about an exciting ‘science capital’ approach which is having a significant impact on young people’s understanding of and engagement with STEM.

13.15 – 14.00:             STEM Expo – Part Two

If you enjoyed Part One, then be sure to come along to Part Two to take part in even more interactive demonstration sessions from another selection of inspirational children, young people, practitioners and experts from across Scotland.

14.30 – 15.15:             ‘The Art of Science Communication’

Join Dr Jamie Gallagher – scientist, science communicator and salsa dance teacher – as he explores how to make STEM subjects memorable, exciting and accessible for all. Discover how fusing STEM with storytelling, art and dance can empower everyone – including even the most STEM-phobic learners and practitioners! – to connect with STEM in new and interesting ways.

15.15:                          Closing remarks

STEM Live! 2018 will be brought to a close by Gayle Gorman, the CEO of Education Scotland.

STEM Insight

 

 

 

 

 

The STEM Insight programme offers staff in schools and colleges a unique chance to experience STEM-related work in industrial settings.

You will be able to participate in a placement with an employer, be supported by face-to-face and online CPD from STEM Learning and SSERC, and learn more about diverse career paths and opportunities for your students.

If you are from a local authority school or college you will receive generous financial support to cover the cost of participating in the programme from Project ENTHUSE. The fee for participating in the STEM Insight programme is £283+VAT, with a £1450 bursary for a ten day placement and a £800 bursary for a five day placement.

Tigtag and Twig online resources are currently accessible via the Glow login and are used by schools across Scotland.  These award-winning resources provide high-quality videos and accompanying learning materials for sciences, mathematics and social studies. They were procured by Education Scotland in July 2015.  The contract was for one year initially with the possibility of a one year extension.

Education Scotland and Twig World have agreed to this one year extension which means that both Twig and Tigtag, and also TigTag Junior and Reach Out CPD, will continue to be available to state schools through Glow until 31st July  2017.

It will not be possible for Education Scotland to extend the contract further beyond this date.

Scotland Excel, the local authority procurement organisation, will include Education Software and Digital Content as an additional lot within their re-tender of their Education Materials framework with a start date of 1st April 2017.  It will therefore be for local authorities to purchase digital content via this route in the future.

Careers Hive, an innovative careers event for S1-S3 pupils hopes to encourage young learners to keep studying science and technology subjects at secondary school. At its core, Careers Hive hopes to inspire the young people attending to consider keeping Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects in their course choices to leave the door open to them, eventually playing a part in the burgeoning and exciting science, tech and innovation sectors.

Join live through Glow TV from the Careers Hive to have an opportunity to speak to Jules Howard, a zoologist, writer, blogger and broadcaster. He writes on a host of topics relating to zoology and wildlife conservation, and appears regularly in BBC Wildlife Magazine and on radio and TV, including on BBC’s The One Show.

Also Andrew Tibbles who works as Studio mentor for MAKLab. Founded in 2012, MAKLab is a network of creative spaces that provides people with access to the latest disruptive technologies. They deliver teaching workshops, community outreach programmes, professional development and accredited learning for a wide demographic across Scotland.

Finally Alexandra Constantinou who works as an Engineering apprentice for Siemens – the largest engineering company in Europe. Get an opportunity to ask YOUR questions!

Are your S2-S6 girls interested in pursuing a STEM related career? Why not take them to the City of Glasgow College’s annual women into engineering event? This event is aimed at promoting awareness and identifying opportunities for aspiring female engineers.

This one day event combines presentations from inspirational female engineers with practical sessions in the Colleges new state-of-the-art engineering campus. Participants will be able to:

  • Practice electronics on our award winning city bytes circuit boards
  • Experience Mechanical and Electrical Engineering training
  • Visit our industry standard Nautical Ship Simulator and Ships Control and Engine Room
  • Speak to professionals and current students about becoming a female engineer.

The event is free to attend and is being held on the 10th March 2016 at City of Glasgow College, Riverside Campus, 21 Thistle Street, G5 9XB.

From 5-13 March, the festival will host a fantastic gathering of creative events, featuring world-leading scientists from the University of Dundee and around the world, to celebrate women in science, technology, engineering and maths.

The Women in Science Festival is the World’s only festival dedicated to celebrating women in science, technology, engineering & maths. The festival aims to promote careers in science to everyone, especially women and girls, it supports professional women to develop their careers and showcases the talented and exciting research taking place across Scotland.

Teacher training to be part of Transition Training Fund.

A £12 million fund to help people who face job losses in the oil and gas sector find alternative employment will also be available to support those who want to become teachers, the Education Secretary has announced.

Angela Constance told the Aberdeen Learning Festival this is the latest in a number of steps the Scottish Government is taking to boost teacher numbers in places which can have difficulty attracting them.

The Transition Training Fund was set up to help people move into other roles in the oil and gas, energy or manufacturing industries by offering grants to support retraining or further education.

It is now being developed, working with Skills Development Scotland and the Energy Jobs Taskforce, to help oil and gas sector staff bring their skills and expertise into teaching – particularly in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.

Ms Constance said:
“We have a highly skilled oil and gas workforce and it is important that we harness their abilities to benefit the next generation, the future of the industry and the north-east of Scotland.

“Developing options within the £12 million Transition Training Fund will help ensure we don’t lose valuable oil and gas sector skills, which can be put to excellent use
and will lead to more high-quality, passionate teachers in the area.

“This is the latest in a range of actions we are taking to make sure we have the right teachers in the right places to benefit our young people.

“We have launched our #inspiringteachers campaign to encourage more people to enter the profession. We have increased student teacher intake targets for the fifth year in a row and are setting targets to train teachers in the subjects where they are needed most.

“We are also supporting innovative ways to encourage more graduates to come into teaching in areas which have difficulty recruiting teachers. This includes the University of Aberdeen’s distance learning initial teacher education programme, which allows council employees to retrain as teachers while staying in work. Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Highland and Angus Councils are already benefiting from this.”

EngineeringUK-report-2016-front-cover3Engineering UK 2016 The State of Engineering analyses the engineering industry’s capacity for growth and details engineering in education, training and employment. Now in its eighteenth year, the report provides the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) community, Government, industry and the third sector with a compelling evidence base.

There are three overriding messages from the report. Firstly, that engineering and skilled engineers make a significant contribution to the UK economy and its productivity as well as working towards mitigating the grand global challenges of climate change, ageing populations, food, clean water and energy.

Secondly, that the UK at all levels of education does not have the current capacity or the required rate of growth needed to meet the forecast demand for skilled engineers and technicians by 2022.

Thirdly, through concerted and co-ordinated action, the engineering community and employers in particular can make a demonstrable difference by working with schools and colleges to inspiring future generations to pursue relevant qualifications and go on to careers in engineering.

Engineering is a vital part of the UK economy – engineering employers have the potential to generate an additional £27 billion per year from 2022. This is equivalent to the cost of building 1,800 secondary schools or 110 new hospitals.

If the UK is to benefit economically from this, we will need to meet the forecasted demand for 257,000 new vacancies in engineering enterprises in the same timescale. The importance of engineering is significant not only economically but also with regards to employment, as for every new engineering role an additional two jobs are created in the economy.

Teaching is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, careers you can choose.

In September, the Scottish Government launched a campaign to encourage more teachers to enter the profession. The recruitment campaign will focus on attracting teachers to STEM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths – in particular to teach Physics, Maths and Computing. The ‘Inspiring Teachers’ campaign will feature figureheads from Scottish business, industry, media and science, sharing their memories of the teachers who inspired them and helped them get where they are today.

The #inspiringteachers campaign seeks to attract more high-quality, passionate teachers into the profession, particularly in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths where there is a demand.
