SALT Annual Conference: Excellence in Practice

With assistance from SCILT, Scotland’s National Centre for Modern Languages, the annual conference of the Scottish Association for Language Teaching (SALT) will take place on 3 November 2012 in the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

Moving on from last year’s theme of a “Conference for Excellence” we are billing this as “Excellence in Practice” and the 20 seminars on offer will reflect this, offering themes which will help practitioners.  Online booking will be available in September and the new SALT brochure will be available to download from the SCILT and SALT websites soon.

More information on fees is available from the events page of  the website.

National Creative Learning Network at SLF 2012 #slf12

The National Creative Learning Network (NCLN) is a community of practice which has a leadership role in championing and advocating creativity in both formal and informal learning contexts. The Network is well represented at this year’s SLF, with members from local authorities across Scotland leading workshops and seminars throughout the two days of the festival.

Education Showcase: The Showcase programme features demonstrations, experiments, drama and music making with NCLN contributions from a number of authorities. To view the Education Showcase programme click here.

The Byre Theatre presents…auditions for Snow white!

Do you love acting?

Do you love singing and dancing?

Are you aged between 10 and 21?

Would you like to be part of the biggest performance in St Andrews?

Then we have the perfect opportunity for you.

This year’s fantastic family panto at the Byre Theatre is Snow White, written and directed by Gordon Barr, and we’re looking for talented young people to join our company and act alongside our professional cast.

Perhaps you fancy being part of “The Forest Crew” – a bunch of misfit lost boys (and girls) hiding out in the forest, always ready for mischief and determined to help our heroine, Snow White, get her happy ending.

Or maybe you’d like to be part of the all-singing, all-dancing “Mirrorettes” – a girl group full of sass, class and bursting with attitude.

If you would like to be part of the cast of this year’s spectacular Byre Theatre panto, then we’ll be holding auditions on Sunday 9th September between 2p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Byre Theatre.

The young cast will rehearse weekly and during the October half-term before working with the professional cast from 19th to 28th November and then performing from 29th November to 30th December. (Please note this will require successful cast members to be excused from school for some rehearsals and performances)

To sign up for an audition, contact Ashley Foster on 01334 468728 or e-mail ashley.foster@byretheatre.com

Scotland is Going Global!

Calling all secondary schools…NUS Scotland and partners have been working on an exciting new project to encourage more Scottish students to study abroad as part of their course. The project includes an academic year of action around study abroad opportunities.

Fife is one of three pilot areas where we hope to roll out a training module (‘Scotland’s Students are Going Global!’) in partnership with the Scottish European Educational Trust.

For more information on the project, please do not hesitate to contact Kristellys Zolondek kristellys.zolondek@nus-scotland.org.uk

Rehearse with Random Accomplice

Join Tron Participation on Wednesday 12 September at 2 pm live from the Tron Theatre as we take a sneak peek into the rehearsal room with Random Accomplice as they prepare for their upcoming show ‘The Incredible Adventures of See Thru Sam’.

European animal life – competition for primary schools

The new European Parliament office in Scotland competition for primary pupils asks them to create images to illustrate a 2013 Calendar on the theme of ‘Europe’s rich Animal Kingdom’. The competition is now open for entries to be submitted until the deadline of 9th October.

The organisers are especially keen to see artwork of some of the rarer European animals, birds and insects. The diversity of species which live in Europe provides plenty of scope for creative young people.

The artwork will be judged by a panel of MEPs and European Parliament officials, with prizes and a presentation to the winner. The winner of the competition will feature in a calendar made up of children’s drawings from all over Europe, and will also illustrate one month, along with eleven runners up, in the official EP Office in Scotland 2013 calendar. All schools entering the competition will receive a copy of the finished calendar, and a selection of the illustrations will also be exhibited at the EP Office in Edinburgh.

Good luck to all the Scottish children who take part.
