The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games – A rich context to inspire learning

This event will be held on Monday, 17 June 2013 from 08:45 – 15:00, at Commonwealth House, Glasgow.

On Monday 17 June, there will be just 401 days before the biggest multi-sport and cultural event ever to come to Scotland opens in Glasgow. That’s less than 58 weeks! Fortunately, education establishments across the country are already preparing to incorporate learning opportunities around the Commonwealth Games in the next academic year.  The event will showcase other inspirational programmes and initiatives available to teachers to stimulate learning around the Commonwealth Games. A variety of engaging workshops delivered by practitioners and organisations experienced in Games Legacy work will provide practical, hands-on exemplification on the impact of the Games as a context for learning.

Twig on Glow Summer Challenge

This summer term, Twig is offering Scottish students the chance to tackle some ‘Big Questions’ that even the best scientists struggle with today. Using Twig Studio, a brand new film editing resource, students can create their own films in these topics. Professor Robert Winston will be judging all entries and winners will receive personal commendations from the renowned scientist.

The challenge helps deliver levels 2, 3 and 4 experiences and outcomes from the broad general education including those from topical science. It is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of the big ideas and concepts of the sciences. YMFS: Monthly Live Streamed Discussion – Article 31

Join us for the first in a series of monthly live streamed broadcasts, led by Youth Music Forum Scotland using Google+, exploring current topics in youth music from all across the country.

This first broadcast will feature guest Tam Baillie, Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People, joining us to discuss the recently released Article 31 (children’s right to culture, leisure and play) and the effect it will have on young people and those who work with young people throughout the UK.

Take part in the discussion live online where you can ask the Commissioner anything on Article 31 and find out all about what’s happening in youth music in Scotland this month.

The live stream discussion will run from 6.00—7.30pm on Wed 29 May.

To join in the debate, you’ll need a Google account, which takes just a few minutes to set up and will enable you to join in the discussion fully. We encourage you to pose questions to the Children’s Commissioner in advance of the event by emailing, hello@ymfs.org.uk or on Twitter using the hashtag, #Article31 or at Facebook.com/YMFScot or you can call the Inner Ear office and ask to speak with Benny or Anny, on 0141 226 8808. If you prefer you can join the Google+ hangout where you can talk directly on camera (using your computer’s in-built microphone and camera) and ask a question as if you were in the room. If you’re new to Google, we recommend you take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with Google+ from 6pm, where we’ll be on hand to help with any technical queries before the broadcast starts from 6:30pm.

Train to be an actor and earn credits at Scotland’s national conservatoire

Introduction to Actor Training is the perfect short course for any student wishing to take their first steps towards professional training in acting and earn credits whilst doing so.

This intensive five-week acting course will introduce you to foundation acting skills and is taught by the world-renowned staff who teach on the full-time BA Acting degree course at the Royal Conservatoire.

By the end of this summer course, you will be fully prepared for further vocational training in acting and you will have experienced what life is like studying in a conservatoire.

2013 Songs for Social Justice Festival

The 2013 Songs for Social Justice Festival was launched in November 2012 and all Scottish secondary schools were notified of it in December 2012.

Schools are invited to confirm their intention to participate in the Festival by Monday 3 June 2013, and to submit a maximum of two songs per school by Friday 1st November

The Festival will showcase one entry from each school at a Showcasing event on Friday 29 November 2013 at the STUC Centre, Glasgow.

All participating schools will be presented with an Award Certificate.

PROJECT Y DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FRIDAY 8 MARCH
We’ve extended the deadline for Project Y applications to Friday 8 March – that’s a whole extra week to fill out the application form and sort out a head shot.

If you’re still not sure whether to apply or not then don’t take our word for it listen to what some of our previous Project Y dancers have to say. 

And don’t be put off by the costs involved, particularly for the Performance Course. We have  bursaries on offer and are happy to help you with other fundraising suggestions.

Say4Schools Internet Safety Competition (P6/7) – Now open!

Fife Council Education and Learning Directorate, Adam Smith College, Fife Constabulary and the seven Community Safety Panels in Fife have joined together to promote the Say4Schools Internet Safety competition 2013.

The competition is open to all primary 6 and 7 pupils in Fife and Community Safety Police Officers will be visiting schools to help promote the competition.  The theme of the competition is “Be Aware… Don’t Share” and highlights the dangers of sharing personal information online whether through social networking sites or online gaming.

Bryan Kirkaldy, Head of Education explains, “The digital age is upon us and our children are increasingly connected to the web whether it’s gaming online through their consoles or using social networking on their smart phones.  The aim of the competition is not only to make young people aware of the dangers of sharing personal information but as part of Curriculum for Excellence, to develop the skills they need for learning, life and work.”

Building on the success of last year’s competition, which attracted over 700 entries from primaries across Fife, this year’s competition is now open and will close on Friday 17 May 2013.

David Imrie,Curriculum Technology Adviser said, “To help pupils in this year’s competition, we will promote the use of Digital Techologies such as Digital Animation, Digital Comic Books and Digital Music to help them with their storyboards.  The website Say4Schools is a great resource and I would encourage parents to visit the site.”

Finalists will be selected from each of the seven community safety areas with an overall winner being announced at a dedicated prize giving ceremony in May.  Prizes include an iPad mini for the winning pupil and a Zulogic ZU3d animation kit for the finalists.

John Wood, Treasurer of the Glenrothes Community Safety Panel said, “The Community Safety Panels are constituted groups of volunteers, dedicated to promote crime prevention and community safety.  On behalf of all the panels we are delighted to sponsor and promote the Say4Schools competition.  Each year the competitions influence grows and this partnership is really showing its effectiveness in dealing with issues that effect us all.

On behalf of Say4Schools, I would like to wish all the pupils who enter the best of luck.  On the evidence of last year’s competition, there are a lot of creative minds out there and I cannot wait to see this year’s entries.”
